Shakeology and IBS
Shakeology and IBS
4/16/11 8:23 PM
Hi all,

I just wanted to say that I've noticed some folks complain that Shakeology has made them gassy and/or constantly going to the bathroom, etc. As a person with IBS now for 4 years, that is the norm for me. It's very uncomfortable and tends to make me worry if I eat the wrong thing or even sometimes too much of the right thing. Even now after 4 years I feel like my stomach is a science project. Because of my IBS, I cannot follow menus that are included in workout programs (such as Turbo Fire which I'm almost through with) because menus like that are never written with people like me in mind.

Anyway, I've been dying to try Shakeology but procrastinated because of my IBS. Well, I finally bit the bullet and had 4 samples sent to me (2 of each flavor). I tried the chocolate one with 8 oz of 8th Continent Vanilla Soy milk and while I was impressed with its creamy shake consistency without ice, I really didn't care much for the flavor. Not because it was awful, but because I'm not really into chocolate. I like chocolate but in different capacities and drinks is definitely not one of them. I drank about 1/4 of it and while I was drinking it, my stomach started to do the all too familiar cramps that it does when I've eaten or drank something I shouldn't have. But because it was Friday and I don't work on the weekends, it's safe for me because I don't have to worry about going outside.

I then tried the Greenberry which is the one that I see people like the least. Again I blended it with 8 oz of the 8th Continent Vanilla Soy milk, no ice and again I was impressed with its creamy shake consistency. The color is kind of offputting and I thought it was going to have a medicinal kind of taste. I took a sip and I LOVED IT!!! Holy Soy Cow (I know they don't exist) but I LOVED IT!!! I can't stop thinking about it because with IBS, I can't really eat all of those good things that make your body work hard (fiber, greens, etc. unless they're of a soluble nature) and this shake has the ingredients that my body has been craving for 4 years! This is better than a multivitamin!

Alas, this morning (Saturday) I was on my throne. I don't know if it was because of the little bit of choclate shake that I had (chocolate is not allowed with IBS) or a combo of both the choclate and greenberry. I suspect that it's just because of all the nutrients etc. in the shake. I couldn't really leave the house today until I knew it was safe and I hate when that happens (hence why I test it on a weekend, otherwise if I do it on a weekeday then I'd have to call out sick from work). I'm still buying a bag of the greenberry but will only be able to drink it on Fridays and maybe Saturdays and whenever I have an extended weekend.

Yay Shakeology! emoticon

Hey Bendee,

Sorry I saw this post so late. I too have IBS, and started using shakeology hoping that it would help so I could stop taking Bentyl. I'm about 2 weeks in and so far, it isn't helping. In fact, the gas and stomach "explosions" seem to be a bit worse. I am hoping that maybe my body is cleansing itself, and I will notice some improvement soon. I plan to stay on shakeology for at least two months before I decide whether or not it is worth the money. I am drinking the chocolate right now. Several of my friends that have tried greenberry warned me that I wouldn't like it, and I am afraid to try it. Keep me posted on your progress!

Hi Momartin,

I had 2 packs of each of the greenberry and the chocolate. I tried the chocolate first (2 Fridays ago) and while I was drinking it, my stomach started its all too familiar cramps. I'm not a big fan of chocolate and only drank about 1/4 of it. I then made the greenberry flavor and to my surprise, despite from its offputting color, I liked it! The damage had already been done to my stomach from the chocolate and the next morning, I couldn't leave the house until I was confident it was done. I'm not suppose to have anything chocolate because of the IBS and because my stomach reacted immediately from drinking the chocolate Shakeology, I had to give the greenberry another taste on its own.

The following Friday (which would've been last Friday)I drank my 2nd pack of Greenberry. No stomach cramping. No issues at all. Oh joy! I immediately ordered the greenberry bag and have now been drinking it since last Friday. I even drank it twice on Sat and Sun all without incident. Since the chocolate and greenberry have the same ingredients, I can only assume that the cocoa is what did the damage.

Try the greenberry to taste and see how that makes you feel.

Hi Ladies!

I was glad to see your post because I have talked to two people that do not have IBS issues and love it with no problems. However, I am also taking bentyl and am so sick of being on medicine and feeling "stoned" when I take that medicine. I am trying to do more of an all natural approach. I love the taste of shakeology but have experienced gas and bloating as well. This is so embarrassing. I want to give it a try but am afraid with my job/activities, etc. and do not want to go out in public with these issues. What are your thoughts? Do you guys drink in the morning and also did you cut your portion back to half a scoop at first?

Thanks!

Lisa

Hi Lisa!

I use a complete scoop of the Greenberry. During the work week I drink shakeology after dinner and on the weekends I may have it twice or thrice when the mood hits me. I have not used it as a meal replacement.

Do you drink the chocolate shakeology? If so, maybe the cocoa or whatever it is that makes it chocolate is the culprit? Have you tried the greenberry to see what kind of results you get with that one?

Hi! I have not used the greenberry yet but I am signed up for the monthly shipments and next month I selected the greenberry just to taste the difference. I am a chocolate gal. Usually the chocolate does not bother me especially if it is dark and all natural. What do you mix with yours? Did you always use a full scoop?

And it seems like you really like it - do you use it as a snack instead or after a workout? I read that it is better to have after workouts instead of before.

Thanks for the response!

I love the greenberry. Most of the love comes from the relief of it not being so bad tasting (though I have to admit the color is a bit offputting) and because it doesn't make my IBS act up. All I use is 8 oz of 8th Continent's Vanilla Soy milk and a full scoop of the shakeology. I may add an ice cube or 2 but that's it.

I exercise after work so right about 5:30 PM or so I'm pressing play and I'll drink it after dinner. On the weekends I may drink it as a mid morning snack after breakfast and again either as a snack during lunch or after dinner.

I have not tried that brand of soymilk but I will have to try it. I am glad it's not bad tasting. I really like the chocolate. I wished the greenberry had more protein in it though. My stomach is starting to tolerate it more. No embarrassing side effects. The first time I tried it was not a pretty site!

Hello there! I came across this post, doing some searching for IBS and Shakeology (for a future client). I'm wondering what has come about since 2011, and, as well, if you've tested Vegan Shakeology in conjunction with your IBS (whether it's given better results than both Greenberry or non-vegan Chocolate.

I'm also curious as to whether you've attempted the Ultimate Reset, and whether that might potentially be beneficial for the IBS, due to the high alkalization of the ingredients in Ultimate Reset.

Looking forward to hearing more! Have an amazing night! emoticon
