Shakeology & Constipation
6/27/11 8:45 AM
I've been using Shakeology for 2 weeks now.

Day 1 & 2 - 1/2 scoops with about 8 oz Almond or Skim Milk, ice in blender
Days 3 - 7 - Full scoops with same amount of milk, ice in blender
FINALLY had bowel movement after 6 days.
Days 8 - 12 - 1/2 scoops 4 oz. Almond or Skim milk and 4 oz. water, ice in blender
Days 12 - 14 - 1/2 scoops with 8 oz water, ice in blender.
STILL NO BOWEL MOVEMENT.....

I've read through all the posts on the Shakeology forum and I know this has happened to some people, but I'm wanting to know if it's going to get better, or if they just had to stop using it? I had my gallbladder removed a couple years ago and don't know if that is an issue. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Caseylyn -

The best thing to do here is add fiber. Could it be that you've reduced your fiber intake as you started drinking Shakeology? We have a specific fiber sup, but it might take some time to get, so I'd go to the health food store today and get yourself a good fiber supplement like colon cleanse. Make sure to get one without added sugar.

I'm not reducing my fiber intake. I bought Shakeology because it claims to promote healthy digestion and regularity, among other things. So why should I have to spend an extra $20 for the Fiber Boost?

Why did you drop back to 1/2 scoop during week 2?

Were you having trouble before Shakeology? If so, what Denis is probably saying is that the fiber in the shake might not be enough for you.

I would use one scoop each shake and give it a little more time before it fixes your digestive problems. It works differently for everyone. In the meantime you can get fiber other ways rather than adding the fiber boost. Eat more fruit or try a fiber bar, high fiber cereal or bread, etc.

Before investing in the fiber boost, you need to take a full scoop total once every day for up to 3 months. If one scoop at a time is too much for you, just do 1/2 scoop in the AM and 1/2 scoop in the PM. Also, how is your water intake??? You need to be sufficiently hydrated to avoid constipation. Also, what's your diet like? OK now for the nitty gritty shakeo info....

Shakeology has prebiotics which feed the probiotics which help to balance the good bacteria levels in your gut. Prior to starting Shakeo, your gut was/is populated with bad bacteria, crud, and all kinds of other "junk" for lack of a better term. "Change" takes time, up to 3 months to be exact. The pH and bacterial changes as well as the cleansing action that makes Shakeo so great will take time. However, know that it IS working. Think about it like this.... When you've grown the most as a person (both success wise and physically), how did you feel? Were you comfortable? Probably not. The same is true with your body. You want to "grow" in your aspiration to become healthier, even healthier in your gut. You might have some binding action going on now, but this Shakeology-it WORKS. Patience is key. You didn't get the bad bacteria, crud, etc in your gut overnight, so it's not really fair to expect it to be gone overnight, now is it? emoticon Let me know if that makes sense, doesn't make sense, or you need more help ok? Have a great weekend!!

OK, I know I'm a few months late replying to this, but I just started Shakeology 2 months ago & am having the exact same problems!!! I too had my gallbladder out several years ago and have had stomach issues since. I tried using the fiber from beachbody, but it only made me VERY bloated and gassy! I've been using regular benefiber 3 times a day and occasionally use a stool softener. My diet is FULL of fruits....usually a fruit w/ every meal. So, I don't think additional fiber is what I need. I also cut back to 1/2 scoop after about 2 wks. I'm really trying to hold out for the entire 3 months due to the challenge group I'm in, but I'm wondering if I need to just quit the shakeology all together and opt for something else. While it may be "the healthiest meal of the day", I'm not sure if it's really worth it to NOT go to the bathroom for SEVERAL days then have it hurt when you finally do. Just wondering if anything changed for you????

i have generally been very regular. i workout and run often and after a good run, i would have a good bowel movement. but when i started shakeology..wow; i suddenly became backed-up. at first, i did not tie it to shakeology. i thought i might be stressed or maybe eating something in diet causing a chnage. i was drinking senna tea, which helped, but that made me go to the bathroom often. and i did not feel that is was right to induce Diarrhea in order to go to the bathroom. i was concerned about potential long term health risks.
after reading these posts, i am surprised at the amount of amature doctors making medical recommendations about what to eat and drink in conjuction with shakeology order to induce a bowel movement. the bottom line is that; If you have make all of these changes to your diet and habits in order to induce a bowel movement because you want to ingest a particular product, maybe you should choose a different product. because we sell this product, and we read all of the great ingredients on the label, we want to believe in it.
i am not a medical doctor, but i know that i should listen to my body; when it tells me i am cold, i put on a jacket, when my elbow hurts from doing too many curls, maybe i should take a break; and when something i am ingesting makes me constipated, maybe i should drink something else.
i know one thing - shakeology clogged me up as if i had put a cork in my behind. some of the people i recommended it to, had other problems. one person did enjoy it, but we did not get into the side effects.
i read the label closely and there is no warning about it.
anyway, that is my two cents.

I also have been having the same kinds of problems with Shakeology. I have been eating lots of fruits and vegetables so I don't think it's not having enough fiber. And I drink plenty of water throughout the day. I went from using a full scoop to just a half and it has helped some but not enough. I finally decided to stop using it after a month of these issues so hopefully I'll be back to my regular self. I was excited to try Shakeology but with the side effects of bloating, constipation and excessive gas, it just doesn't seem to agree with me and I don't think that it is beneficial to my health. I am going to continue using the recovery drink for the extra protein. Hopefully, I won't have to discontinue that too.

I also started having problems when I first started Shakeology. I was making them with 1/2 milk and 1/2 water. I tried nonfat and then almond milk. I even tried adding the fiber. Then I switched to no milk, just water and a dollop of coffee creamer. It tastes great and no more problems with constipation.

By chance did you drop your calorie intake while taking shakeology? If so that's what I did and I got severe gas because my body was craven nutrition. Once I increased my nutrition back to the level it was suppose to be I was going more regular and the gas went away..I started burning calories and I started loosing weight..Just make sure it's clean nutrition..

Good Luck

Shakeology contains blue-green algae, fructose, ginkgo, grape seed extract, enzymes such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, lipase, oat grass, and schisandra. Although there are a lot of benefits to each of these and for the vast majority of people they are a good thing, all of them are known to negatively interact with things in a very small percentage of people and could cause digestive tract issues.

Everything that's been posted here is correct and may be the cause, but it could be a negative reaction to one of the ingredients. If it is not too severe, cutting back on the dosage could enable you to adjust to it and the issue goes away. If the issue is serious, then shakeology may not be for you. It's good stuff, but nothing works for everybody.

I am having the same problems...I've always put a banana in mine. I'm going to take the banana out because I know that can cause constipation. If that doesn't work, I'll have to stop using it.
