Clif bar before a workout
7/1/11 6:58 AM
Clif bar/energy bars good before a workout? Never tried that so figured I'd ask for some input if someone does that.

Thanks

I always eat a prtoetin bar about an hour before my workout. I normally eat lunch at 1:00 pm and then get out of work at 4:00 pm. I'll eat the protein bar when I leave work, and then begin my workout around 5:00 pm. It works for me because I feel that protein bar keeps me going to get me through my workout.

That is quite alright, I do it too emoticon For me it depends on what sort of workout. When I do P90X, I eat one an hour before...any cardio and it takes me at least 2 hours to be ready for a workout.

If I work out in the afternoon, I also usually eat a protein bar about an hour to hour and a half before my workout. However, I prefer Pure Protein bars over Clif bars because Clif bars contain a ton of sugar and not that much protein.

i used to eat these back in the day, and they always gave me horrendous heart burn during the workout. They taste really sweet, so it was probably due to the added sugar

Any food to give you energy prior to a workout can work if you can tolerate it.
I personally plan workouts and fit meals around that.
I use bars for snacks at work but never close to workouts. I find shakes less disruptive to my digestion.

Yea, that's fine. That's what I've been doing for the past year on p90x. I eat a clif energy bar and an apple an hour to an hour and a half before my workouts. Just make sure it's the energy bar and not their builder's protein bar because you don't want too much fat or protein before a workout because they take longer to digest. Also, remember to mark the clif bar down as a serving of starchy carbs because they do contain a lot.

Pure Protein and it's Sugar Alcohol chemical taste is just nasty. Clif Builder bars have adequate protein.

However, all bars are just glorified candy bars. Might as well eat a Snickers. And if you stay within your calorie range for the day, that's actually fine.

Gonna have to disagree with the "All Bars..." statement. MANY bars certainly are..clif bars..Meh. I like 'em when I'm out rock climbing or doing and endurance workout. If it's going to be a p90x workout or regular gym, etc..I personally prefer muscle milk light bars. Half the calories and 5grams more protein. There are others that would do..clif bars are just rather carby, in my opinion.

All bars. And your Muscle Milk has about the same ingredients as the clif bar except Muscle Milk has partially hydrogenated (trans fat) oil. Don't look at the nutrition guide, look at the ingredients list:

I certainly wouldn't claim that the muscle milk light is the best of the bars, just said I like them and they are not all created equal. Neither the ingredient list nor the nutrition data alone tell the whole story. Candy bar? I guess we define that differently...The stuff I downed my whole life didn't have 3 types of protein or any fiber. Bars anywhere near the quality of downing a few oz of salmon and some fruit? Not at all, but fish gets funky in my glovebox and I don't bother trying to get micronutrients out of bars - that's just silly. I down them when I'm specifically looking to get some simple carbs and protein. When I want a higher ratio of carbs (or something that doesn't get gooey in my climbing gear pack), I tend to take clif bars. Whenever practical, I just eat real food.
