Insanity workout shoes?

What would be the best shoes for the Insanity program? I'm currently wearing my Reebok RunTone shoes and they don't feel right. Thanks! :-)

no no no don't wear those shoes!!!!! Both of you, bad!! lol.. your ankles need the best support they can get when doing any sort of jumping, which is all that insanity is.. socks would give you no support and your ankle could roll easily.. and those shaper things are meant for a strict back to front movement. You need cross trainers ideally. Go to an athletic store and invest in a good pair, your body will thank you.

I'm starting the 7th week and I've been doing it barefoot with no problems. I've noticed my feet, calves, and ankles are stronger. I started out with shoes but there's no comparison to doing it without them.

Well they obviously don't call you "Iron Man" for nothing! There is no way that I could or would even attempt doing that workout barefoot! More power to ya though! :-)

I agree! I totally feel it more from doing it barefooted and it feels so much better. Carpet, cement, and hardwood floors all seem to be better when I go barefoot. I'm on the recovery week and have only done two workouts with shoes. Try it you may love it!

I'm with IronMan and dwest. Barefoot works best for me as well. I would also suggest just trying it to see how you like it.

The best thing to do is go to something like Run-On or Lukes locker and find out what shoe is built for the mechanics of your feet. They do tests to check your gait, weight distribution and arch. Based on that data they will give you a list of shoes that are built for your foot. I personally landed in some Aesics with custom made athletic foot orthotics built by foot levelers. They work great for running/biking. I'm from Dallas and I'm not sure if there are Run-On stores anywhere else out there, but theyre who I'd recommend for sure.

However, I'm with you guys on the barefoot thing. I find it keeps me on my toes and landing soft rather than when I'm in shoes I sometimes land on my heels.

The shape-ups and reebok tone shoes are terrible for this program though as people said before. This workout already murders the calves and those shoes are designed to work the calves more.

i wear Vibram Five Finger shoes, KSO, for all my Insanity workouts. They are the most comfortable and lightweight shoes out there. My calves are so much stronger because of them too.

I do it barefoot as well. I find that when I wear shoes, it really hurts the arch of my foot. I'll usually do the warm ups barefoot and then put shoes on for the rest of the workout, depending on which one it is. I definitely have to put shoes on for the pushup exercises, since I hardly get any grip barefoot. But for me, it seems like I have more control, if that makes sense, when I'm barefoot. I workout on carpet so when I wear shoes, my legs feel very heavy.

Just chiming in with my $.02...

my running shoes and crsstrainers made my arches hurt fiercely. I then did a week barefoot and it felt so much better, but with all the sweat flying around I was worried about slipping. I got a pair of Merrell sneakers (trail glove) that are similar to the five finger but with a more convential look. My feet no longer throb during the workouts.

Where did you get those Merrell sneakers? If they are what I think they are, that's exactly what I've been looking for. Something with grip on the bottom but not so hard on the feet. I am thinking they are something like swimming shoes?

Wow! I'm amazed that so many of you do this workout barefoot! I guess I could try it, but I think that the push ups and running in the push up position would be too hard without shoes. I guess it's worth a try though! Thank you all! :-)

Some of the push up moves are hard without shoes, so I'll put them on for those. But it seems like you have to focus more on your core since you can't just throw your feet back without shoes. I tend to do the moves more controlled since I can't do them really fast without shoes. I'm afraid I'll break a toe emoticon

My feet and toes got used to the pushups and pushup positions after a while. It's amazing how your body can adapt.

Great question. I'm on the fence on this one.

The Insanity guide recommends cross-trainers. Quote from the fold out in the shipment I got said "Wear supportive shoes and (if needed) inserts. Cross-trainers have more support than running shoes."

I did my first round of Insanity with cross trainers (Avia brand). They seemed to work well. Although at the end of the 63 days, I started getting pain in my Achilles tendon. It wasn't clear to me whether it was the back of the shoes causing this or just the result of all those plyometrics eventually catching up with me. After taking off 2 days and starting round 2, the tendon is much better so may just be the continued beating received from the workouts.

In the beginning I started a few workouts forgetting to put my shoes on and didn't feel the support I needed for some of the moves. So for me personally, I felt much stronger on the moves with shoes on.

I'm debating on finding some shoes with very low backs to them so there's less impact on the Achilles tendon. If anyone has similar experience or advice in that area, feel free to comment.

I use the New Balance Minimus series, They have grips on the bottom that work great for the push ups, however they are not cheap. They will cost you about 100$ unless you can find them on sale.. I love them and they are pretty sleek.

Yeah, what Travis said ... I also use the New Balance Minimus, and they really have helped me out quite a bit. Before NB, I was using Nike Trainer Ones, and where my arches should be (I'm SUPER flat footed) would be KILLING me before I even finished the warm up. When I switched to the minimus, the pain and tenderness was gone immediately. I'll never purchase another shoe. Well worth every penny I spent on them.
