Can you gain weight and muscle mass while doing p90x?
I have to gain weight and size for college football next year. I am at 5'10 160lbs and coaches want me to atleast be at the 170 range (175 preferanced) and add more muscle by next spring. Can this be done with p90x or should I just workout at a gym. Also if anyone can point me to a diet plan that could help me add muscle mass and good weight id be grateful!

I think you would be better off at the gym. P90X is basically a body weight circuit routine. It's hard to add mass doing body weight exercises. You can use the cardio exercises from P90X, but lifting weights would make you stronger and add the muscle mass for football.

P90X has some good exercises in it such as plyometrics which would be great for football. Also Insanity is more geared for this and help a lot with speed and agility. These programs are also great for people who want to workout at home and have limited workout equipment.

In your situation, you would want to start a beginning strength training routine such as starting strength or Madcow. Your routine should be built around the big three squats, deadlifts and benching. For a diet plan 1-1.5grams of protein per pound of lean body mass, and 0.4-1 grams of fat per pound of total body weight with the rest filled in with mainly carbs. Your diet should be composed of mainly whole foods and minimally processed foods.

Having said that I would still look into Insanity and maybe even P90X if you have the money as they can still help you reach your goals on some level.

You can definitely gain muscle mass with p90x! You just have to modify the program slightly, and adjust your diet accordingly. Check out my profile, I gained almost 20 lbs. If you would like some help sorting it all out send me a message, or email me at AAndrews86@gmail.com

My beachbody coach also gained 60lbs (started at 105lbs) over a few rounds of Power 90 and P90x.

While it is true that there are several groups of people in these threads who have put on considerable lean body mass I think we have to be a bit more realistic about the numbers.

First, when a person goes through a bulking phase they can expect to gain at least 1 lb of fat for every pound of muscle they put on. The most amount of muscle a person can hope to put on each month is ~2 lbs of muscle in the first year and that is with an optimal workout program, diet and genetics. Natural bodybuilders can put on 40-50 lbs of muscle in a 4+ career of lifting weights after which they pretty much hit their genetic limit. With each year of lifting weights they tend to only be able to put on about half as much muscle per month in each of the subsequent years.

I don't want to diminish your guys achievements because I've seen some of the threads where people go from being real underweight to pretty buffed out but people should have realistic expectations. The numbers I posted above are the based on what we see in natural bodybuilders who tend to be much leaner than the juiced up guys. Also, these limits of how much muscle you can put on have been the same for the last 50 years and people haven't really been able to surpass them naturally.

If you want to gain size and power for football then don't waste your time doing P90X. There are multiple well proven methods for explosive power focusing on football. P90X is a great fitness program to get you lean but not a great program to make you a college football player. Good luck.

EDIT: Don't WASTE your time with P90X if you want to be a football player!!!

Absolutely!

Keep in mind p90x is a total fitness program. Not a football program so it will not get you in "football" shape. P90x will give you a solid base with which to build upon. Are you college currently or still in highschool? If in college you should already have access to a trainer and a nutritionist. Do exactly what they say and you will be fine. [Edited by Prawink]
