While i was watching the infomercial about the Insanity program, the spokesperson said "dont want to change your diet? you dont have to!!" well, i started insanity and am heading into my recovery week and i haven't lost a pound...not just a pound. not an inch. i've kept up with the workouts, working hard, sweating like a pig, pushing myself to the limit! but i didn't follow the diet plan. i'm not an unhealthy eater in general; no fried foods, no sweets, or white carbs. This month i'm digging back out the meal plan for insanity and plan to follow it. i WISH i would've stuck to it religiously the first month. my motivation took a big hit today when i took a couple measurements and it was all i needed to see. has anyone else had this experience w/ Insanity or any other program?

I just finished with month one and going into recovery week and am having the same issue. I eat extremely healthy, no soda, refined carbs etc. I usually stick to a fairly low carb diet as well. I've been doing all the workouts till I'm drowning in sweat and I have most def. pushed myself extremely hard. I wish i had some advice but I'm in the same boat as you and very confused as this is not my first Rodeo and I'm not naive about calorie and fat intake. I'd be very interested to know if this is common or not.

As a side note i only have about 7-10 lbs im trying to loose and i for sure thought this was the kick in the cardio ass that would do it. :-S Help!

sorry to doubt you but....have you kept a food diary? If you've not changed your diet at all but you're doing insanity there must be something medically wrong with you not to lose weight or at least change body shape.

All I would say is that you'll have been packing on muscle in your legs, arse, abs, arms, chest, back and that all weighs more than fat....so I'd have at least expected small or bigger arms/legs.

I dont want to sound negative or rude...so apologies if the first paragraph comes across as a bit harsh.... but insanity is super crazy!

Adam -- no offense taken! i seriously just did not change my diet at all. i honestly thought that just doing the workouts was going to be enough. but now that i know it's not, i AM going to "shape-up", change my diet, keep a food journal, and ultimately follow the meal plan as closely as i can. i just totally screwed up my first month, which really sucks! i also lead a pretty much moderate daily life besides the Insanity. i think if i had a job where i was on my feet all day it would make a difference.

OC-glad to know i'm not the only one. ive just concluded that it doesnt' matter HOW much i work out or what i'm doing, if i dont eat right, i dont see results. its gonna be frustrating and costly, but i'm going to stick w/ the meal plan for this second month. my daily caloric intake was figured @ around 1885. i think i MIGHT cut it back to 1700 if my body can handle it. it SEEMS like allot of calories (1700-1800), but i guess w/ the workout i'll need it all for energy. are you going to try anything different? i think a food journal is a good start, like Adam recommended. keep me posted on your progress! we can DO IT!

Paula - I know we've put comments on my blog but I wanted to put this on the thread so people realise we're talking sensibly and honestly about this issue:

Paulamiller:

so, after reading ur Bio, it sounds like you know how harmful not following a proper diet can be! can you really tell big results following a healthier diet? it's super hard when my boyfriend just lives off of pizza and burritos (and looks great) and doesnt eat anything "green." maybe i'll make him start doing his own shopping ;-) thanks for your reply to my message board post!

adam6177 Hey Paula

Absolutely, I'm someone who's spent years kidding myself that my diet isn't so bad and that there must be something wrong with me medically....only to keep a food diary and realise that I was actually being a bit of a dick and lying to myself/not realising quite the calorie content of the food I was eating.

I still struggle now, my food discipline is poor to say the least....but this time round I'm really trying hard (so much so I think I made myself a little ill today) so again another lesson learnt.

I hate those people that seem to eat whatever they like and stay slim....but thats what makes us different, I think I'll always struggle with food as I enjoy eating. I dont drink alcohol and would always chose a nice meal.

As for my results....I've been really strict with myself for 9 days now, and I shouldnt have redone my measurements after a week but I was eager to see....anyway, I lost 7 lbs in 7 days, lost 3/4 of an inch off my waist and my biceps are bigger ....... unfortunately it looks like the only way for me to succeed is to be 100% strict and deprive myself of all goodies!

I experienced the same exact issue when I did Insanity. During the first month I didn't keep track of what I ate and just tried to eat "clean" like normal and I didn't lose a pound. Then month two came around and I started following the nutrition plan and lost 17 lbs! So your diet is really the key!

I think one big reason why this is common is that you will end up eating more while doing Insanity because you're burning a ton of calories during the workouts. So if you're not tracking what you're eating, it's super easy to overeat and not realize it.

So tracking your calories is definitely the way to go. Just wanted to share that to give you more hope and motivation that it will work when your diet is dialed in just like the workouts.

Hope that helps!

Tom

Thanks for the input and confirmation on the food journal (dangit! haha), Tom!

Adam -- i appreciate you being able to relate to me. i think another thing about having to stick w/ the meal plan is due to age, too, lol! i remember not worrying too much about having a "bad" eating day even 5 yrs ago. it's motivating to hear that you're struggling BUT sticking with it. if you can do it then i should be able to, too!! 7 pounds in 7 days!! i'd be ecstatic!!!!!! awesome job!
do you plan all your meals out for the week? or do it by the day?? i dont really cook for anyone but myself, and i'm so used to just making whatever is on hand. just trying to get a feel for how some1 else makes it work. thanks for all the feedback!

I plan as much as possible....I work long days in london so have to be relatively organised....so here's my plan:

breakfast - I've got a bag of 5 bagels and a jar of peanut butter at work which means 1 for breakfast each day, we're also lucky enough that work provide fruit so I grab 1 piece of fruit as well.

Mid morning - I've got a small bag of protein powder under my desk which I use to whip up a protein shake at about 10:30.

Lunch - over the weekend I'll buy 3 packets of cold cuts of meat (chicken/salami/crispy bacon - all the "ready to eat stuff", then every 2 days on my way to work I'll pick up a bag of salad - this does for lunch every day.

Mid afternoon - I bought a box of beef jerky (12 packs) so eat 1 of these each afternoon.

I then workout at about 6pm - so I'll have a protein shake immediately after

Dinner - over the weekend I'll buy 5 packs of fresh meat (rump steak, lamb chops, pork loins, chicken breast etc), I then cook these on my george foreman grill and boil some frozen vegetables.

I then treat myself every day with a fruit yogurt - that way I've got something really nice to look forward to each day but with less than 200 calories.

Unfortunately you need to just be really organised....but for the sake of 60 days whilst doing insanity the sacrifice is worth it, what I'll do after that I dont know but hopefully I'll have taught myself some food lessons and have a little more discipline built in!

PS - I'm 31, age isn't a get out clause ;)

I'm having the same issue! I am just starting MAX interval week, I've lost maybe 4 lbs total? And I feel like I should feel and look firmer... i'm generally a pretty healthy eater... i haven't been following the book meal plan but i've been tracking my calories... I'm supposedly supposed to have around 2,600 cal a day during insanity but i've been sticking between 1700-2100 for the most part...that seemed like way too many calories.. I've been eating a lot of fiber, trying to get my fruits (i'm in college so it's hard) and haven't been drinking alcohol...

anyways.. I'm really getting discouraged, i haven't missed any workouts.. im soaking wet with sweat after, and i look and weight basically the same as before i started. I'm really only trying to lose about 5-10 lbs, i'm 5'10 and weigh around 150-155 but i want to look lean and toned... it's just not happening! i've never had a huge issue with weight, i just can't seem to get this little layer covering my muscles off!!!

i've been trying to make healthier choices, before i started this i didn't eat crazy unhealthy but i've always been able to eat whatever I want and be this size, whether i worked out or not... so i'm frustrated that now that i'm eating less and healthier and doing insanity, NOTHING SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING!

HELP!!!!

I'm no expert but I'd say at that weight/height you really dont have much to lose at all. To get ripped you'll need to be deadly serious and strict with your diet, can you post up an honest account of your daily eating plan?

I too have had this problem I am in my fourth week of insanity and have lost about 4-5 lbs. In the fourth week I decided to try the nutrition plan to see if this will help. I started tracking everything I eat I plan my meals out and try to stick to a 1500 calorie diet with higher protein. I hope this helps

kDaniellef- i'm gonna have to agree w/ Adam on this one. eating healthy is great and all...BUT, if you dont keep a stinkin journal its really hard to tell what you're actually doing right/wrong. i've started journaling using MyFitnessPal and its just...it definitely does the trick. its amazing, educational, and REALLY keeps ya in check. its like an accountability parter. i'd suggest giving a food journal an honest try for a week and see what comes out on the paper. i can relate to your frustration tho! its not easy, and no1 ever said it was. oh, i'm also in month two, day two, and i'm sore as hell already & hoping to see some results where i feel the soreness!! keep up the work, tho, no matter what!

Thanks everyone for replying!! emoticon well I have been keeping my food logged from day one... and i keep them all, so i know pretty much exactly what i'm eating... but i think i really do just need to buckle down and follow the book too.

here's an average day for me, obviously there's more or less consumed and different things depending on the day:

Meal 1: Cereal and milk (either fiber one or organic cereals) OR organic yogurt with fiber one (sometimes other things) - around 250-300 calories

Meal 2: Peanut butter and low sugar jam on 45 calorie whole wheat bread - around 300 cal OR pure protein bar (180-200 cal) OR rice cakes (2-3 which is around 150-180 cal)

Meal 3: Same as meal two generally, sometimes with fruit - sometimes different kinds of sandwiches like turkey. generally around 300-400 cal

Meal 4: whole wheat pasta with red sauce OR grilled cheese on 45 cal bread with tomatoe soup( veggie cheese 40 cal per slice and spray "can't believe it's not butter" - not real butter) OR Cereal OR PBJ -- generally between 300-450 cal

Meal 5: same as meal 4 sometimes i'll have frozen yogurt from mochi or sushi or something sweet.. varies between 300-500 cal

this is an average day.. my diet isn't very broad because i'm in college so it's hard to cook and have a lot of things in my dorm room... but like I said some days are better than others. I'm not a fast food eater, the only junk i ever have is the occasional sweet like a cookie or something a couple times a week... but I still manage to stay between 1600-2100 per day even with the sweets. According to the calculations I should be having 2,600 cal a day if i'm only doing 3-4 moderate workouts a week... and i'm doing insanity every day so I'm not even sure how much i'm technically supposed to be eating... but there's no way i'm gonna eat that much... i'm not losing anything as it is!!

I'm just wondering what I could do to really lean out, am I not eating enough protein? should I cut out sugar? I have a pretty small upper body - waist is 26-27", though it still isn't completely lean which i'd like, but my lower half is my main issue... i want to lose the layer of fat over the muscles on my legs!

What should I add or take out of my diet to really kick it in to gear so I see the results i want by day 60!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say if your waist is 27 (most people measure under), and you're 5'10", you have a fantastic body.

"i've never had a huge issue with weight, i just can't seem to get this little layer covering my muscles off!!!"

Because you are a woman. Your body is made to keep that weight on. I am sorry but at your height and weight, you are in the normal range.

http://www.rush.edu/rumc/page-1108048103230.html

If you're lowering calories and staying in the same place, then quite possibly your body just really likes that place. If you are fit and eating healthy, what is the problem?

I guess you could cut out sugar and eat more protein, but don't ruin your metabolism.

FWIW I didn't change my diet with Insanity and I gained 4-5 lbs (I was underweight before). emoticon Working out will help your body get to its ideal weight and shape... and that doesn't always mean losing!

Hi guys,

I have just started the Insanity program 5 days ago (on Monday), I want to lose about 30 pounds :S because I will get married on December and I want to look as I was 2 years ago... I am about 5'9" and started weighting 210 pounds (my goal is to be 180 pounds or a little bit less)

Two years ago I was in the same scenario, (not getting married xD being at more than 200 pounds), and I went to the gym for about 3 months and also the first 2-3 weeks I was on a very strict diet, and I could do it... now I am doing the same but now with Insanity and I am very glad with the results so far... I have lost about 7.5 pounds!

My diet (which is hard and may not be healthy) is:

Morning at 7am: one bowl of favorite cereal and milk.
Afternoon at 1pm: two pieces of chicken, rice, some radish and cucumber.
Evening at 5pm: one slice of bread with home-made cheese.

And a lot of water and tea the whole day...

I only plan to keep this strictly and probably unhealthy diet for a couple of weeks, and then start eating a little bit more... what happens is that I usually eat outside and I was starting to eat more than I needed (a lot more), so this 2-3 weeks of strict diet make my stomach and body to feel better with less food.

Regards

You are probably not eating enough calories. Your metabolism has adjusted to the reduced calories and is conserving energy for vital functions. Try adding a few hundred calories and see if that kick starts the weight loss. I started at 1,500 calories on Power 90, went to 1,800 then 2,000 on P90x and 2,400 on Insanity (at 6', 170 pounds). Each time I upped my calories I saw renewed weight loss.

It's a info-merical. They say whatever the hell they have to to sell products.

The only way to out-exercise poor nutrition is to run SEVERAL miles a day or do hours and hours and hours of cardio like a professional boxer or athlete.

I don't know about you, but I'm not running 8 miles every damn day just so I can have some junk food. I'd rather do an hour a day, eat clean, and have a cheat day once a week.

Congrats on sticking to the program for an entire month! That's more then what I did before I said...FUCK THAT SHIT! lol ha ha I'll get my fat loss by other means. Even if you haven't lost inches, there are still major changes taking place in your body due to the HIIT. With the proper nutrition approach, you should see great results. Read and follow the nutrition guide it comes with. You'll be set.

If you have any questions or need any help/advice/tips, feel free to message me and I'll get back to you. ;)

HIIT does not make your muscles look firm. Weight training does. HIIT is good for revving the metabolism and burning crazy calories. Excellent for cardio conditioning.

Aside from that, the more on point you are with your nutrition, the better your body will respond to ANY type of exercise.

If you would like help or have any questions, feel free to message me and I'll get back to you. ;)

Workouts, working hard, etc are all secondary means of losing weight and they would only work if you are following a good diet plan. You can still lose weight by skipping workouts but you cannot lose weight without a diet plan. Thus a proper diet plan is more important than any workouts.
