I do it barefoot, I have yet to find a shoe that doesn't grip my carpet when I pivot...it was killing my knees. My ankles have gotten really strong.

I love barefoot! I had/have the carpet issues when I started years ago. So I took off my shoes and haven't turned back since. I've also read articles on barefooting which help me know for me, I made the right decision.

I can't imagine doing the workout barefoot! My poor toesies! And I love the vibrams but they are just a little too pricey for me right now.

Thanks again everyone!
Yes, vibrams are pricey, but I saved for them to reward myself when I reached a goal I was aiming for at that time.

I know the question is about sneakers, but I noticed you said you workout in your basement, well so do I and initially my knees were giving me some problems because the basement is carpet over concreat, so I went to Sports Authority and bought myself two of those mats for asorbing some of the shock when I jump. I have two layers and I've put some 20lbs weights on either end to stop them of shifting around when I jump.

Hope this helps, enjoy Turbo Fire

NailahRaqs:
I'm 4 weeks in and I have had my sneakers FOREVER! lol. I can tell they need to go. I need more support for all the jumping in turbofire.

So, what kind of sneakers do you work out in??? Any suggestions for someone like me,? I don't have the strongest knees, a pain in my hip at times, and I work out in my basement in which the carpet isn't that plush. .

Any suggestions?

I use Asics cross trainers and they work well, but I have trouble pivoting in them for the punches.. it's a pain! I also bought a blue gym mat to help absorb the shock and it has helped a lot.

When you do that mini HIIT have someone video tape it that would be tooo awesome and never know submit it to Beachbody LOL!!!! I have worn Nike Shoxx but I find they are made for narrow feet. I have some curves now but I think I am going to have to go to something else. I will have to check out NB.

@ Shapeshifter59 - I bellydance barefoot and I love doing that. But the bottoms of my feet ache from that. Many of the moves are done on the balls of our feet and 2 hours of that kills them. By the time I'm ready to workout, my feet are crying for a sneaker lol. I love that it works for you thought. I wish I could....I'd save a lot.

@ MMCFITforLIFE - I like the absorption mat idea and holding it down with weights. Another great idea.

@Msprowlin - I totally will :-) I just hope when the fire alarm goes off people don't start running for the store entrance thinking it's real!!!

I was able to get through p90x with these sneakers but Turbofire is a whole different kind of beast. This sneaker hunt may turn into a weekend project!!!

For the workout you are doing you need both forefoot stabiliy & cushioning. While a running shoe will give you great cushioning you won't get the stability you will need for jumping, lunginging and lateral movement. I would suggest the Nike Free TR. It is a women's shoe made specifically for the stuff you are doing. I picked mine up at Lady Foot Locker and they are great. A little spendy but your knees are worth it. They are cute too!emoticon

I love Nike Shox for TurboFire!! They last about 3 months, but I haven't had success with other shoes and all of the plyo.

Jody, I currently have a pair of Nike Shox and I was curious about how long they would last so I was glad to read your post. This may be a silly question but how do you know if they've broken down after about 3 months? When I wore shoes for running, it was more obvious with reduced tread and cushioning. I notice some wear on the heel of the shoes, but again, it's not as obvious as it would be if I were hitting pavement in them. I bounce between exercising in them on carpet and tile in the basement.

The only thing I have noticed about the Shox as a negative, is the pair I bought sometimes will rub my ankle to the point where it is sore (only on left shoe though). Not sure if it was just a defective pair as I bought them at an outlet mall, but generally I was happy with the overall cushioning I got when doing jumps and HIIT workouts.

So I may continue with the Shox, and since I got them in June, I was thinking maybe I needed a new pair anyway if indeed 3 months is a good estimate.

plyo shoes cross-trainer
9/21/11 12:17 PM as a reply to NailahRaqs.
From every direction I've heard a cross-trainer is the way to go. I've been trying to do it in my Nike running shoes, and I just don't have the right support for Turbo, Plyo and Insanity. My arches start hurting and it impairs my performance. Don't just go with one brand though because it works for other people. The response giving you advice to go to a specialty store is good. We have two in the Memphis area - Breakaway Athletics and Fleet Feet. Another word of caution though is that some of these stores specialize in running shoes for distance running, so when you go in asking about plyo I've gotten a few confused looks, LOL. I used to buy shoes because they were cute or my fav color. No more! I developed shin splints from some shoes I was wearing years ago because they were trying to correct a pronation problem I didn't have. You will want to see if you pronate or not (each foot may be different), how much room you need in the toe box, is the arch support right, does it fit your heel well, etc. I actually have some slim Merrell's that I use for Kenpo, but with plyo the support is important for your ankles, knees, hips... Hope this helps!

I got the Asics Gell Intensity. I love them! They're supportive and absorb the shock when doing the jumps. Knees and ankles are not bothering me anymore.

cross trainers new balance flat foot best shoes numbness
9/21/11 7:49 PM as a reply to NailahRaqs.
The best shoes are New Balance, I have a flat foot and numbness and I have found the perfect shoe for both problems. They are the cross trainers 1211. The higher number you go the better it is for the foot. Podiatrists recomend New Balance. Hope this helpsemoticon

Hello,
I am currently wearing Reebok Reezig Nano I got them at Lady Foot locker about 1 month ago. Before that I was wearing the basic Reezig. The difference is the Nano is lighter and is designed for high intense aerobics, and the basic Reezig is for all around aerobics/working out, plus it has a wider base in the heel. Both are awesome I would highly recommend either. Good luck

I bought some new Nike Shox Navinas - I LOVE them for TF & Chalean Extreme. I got them at Lady Foot Locker and they had me try them on with insoles and the insoles made a great difference because I have a high arch. I love them! Definitely the ones that fit your feet the best will be good. emoticon

Asics are my #1 Choice! A lightweight running shoe works well but the most important factor is tread on the bottom - Too much tread inhibits pivoting and can contribute to knee injuries. If your shoe has a circular tread on the ball of the foot that will work great! However, you can usually only find that in a cross trainer or dance shoe. Asics tend to provide great support and little tread - been using them for years and highly recommend. emoticon K

NailahRaqs:
I totally will do a do a mini HIIT in the sneaker store!!!!! You think if I try them on then, yell "SKI" pump my arms up and down, do sumo xquats, do some jump blocks and yell "YOU'RE NOT TIRED" they will give me a discount just to get the crazy lady out of the store????? lol just wondering.....

But I will do a few hops around to make sure they feel good.

I think the best bet for me is to go somewhere where there is a large variety of sneakers and just try them on until I find the perfect match. Living in NY, that shouldn't be too hard to find.

I just need something that can help my knees when doing all the jumps. And I like the idea I read elsewhere about tape on the bottom of the shoe to help pivot.

Thanks again guys!

That is a great idea!

I compared shoes for months because my Nikes weren't cutting it for TF. Then I discovered Ryka. Aaaaahh.......... They're designed to address many of the specific factors of women's structure and movement. And they sure got it right for me! I'd highly recommend trying some on. emoticon

LOL!!! I do a mini HIIT in the store! I always take my 5 year old with me so I don't look so crazy bouncing around! I got lucky my first round of TF. I found a pair of Nike Air Max on the clearance table of a sporting goods store. I tried them on and they were great. When they wore out, I had such a hard time trying to find a new pair. I bought and returned 4 pair until I finally found a pair that would work, but not as well as my Air Max's. Now it's time for a new pair again. Wish me luck.

You guys are the best! I think I am going to go to a Lady Foot Locker. There are tons here in NY. I plan to go during the week when it's not crowded so I can actually get some customer service!

@cnewyou - I have a 4 year old. I think I'll put her in charge of doing the siren sound and screaming YOU'RE NOT TIRED!!! She's my biggest supporter.

My ankles never give me issues. It's my knees I worry about, and most recently, my hip. It's been hurting to the point where I got an x-ray. It sounds like one of the constant things everyone is saying is that a cross trainer is best. I'll be sure to let everyone know what kind of sneakers I get!!

Keep the suggestions coming!
