42 Year-old Lady Going From Good to Excellent with P90X2

Jan 2, 2012 is my official start date and I cannot wait! I have sampled the first four workouts, my garage gym is ready and so am I. I completed my first round of P90X in 2007, have done P90X+, Insanity, Crossfit, weight-training, ran a marathon and a half marathon, took up Stand-Up Paddle boarding, mountain biking, kettlebells and olympic weightlifting. Most recently I completed a round of Asylum. Right now I would say I am in o.k. if not good shape. I'm pretty strong but want to be more athletic, move better and feel good when I occasionally ski, bike or SUP. I want to go from good to excellent and most important feel good about the way I look, feel and perform. I am ready for a 90 day challenge, ready to dial in my nutrition and be accountable to myself and others. There are lots of people starting their P90X2 journey, in a way we are all the test group. Let's support and encourage each other and show the world what a program like P90X2 can do!

In the hopes of getting a neighbor to join me I lent my P90X2 dvds out until Jan 1. Risky I know, I mean what if she loses them emoticon. In the meantime I have been trying to maintain the gains I made doing Asylum by getting at least 5 workouts in per week. Kettlebells are a favorite so I have been doing some great metabolic kb workouts, lots of hill sprints and some good old-fashioned barbell work. My plan is to do a little bit of barbell lifting during my 90 days. Most likely I will use the Wendler 5-3-1 plan with Squats and military press. I will dial my starting weights WAAAYYY back from my max efforts this summer. Tough on the ego but I know I have lost some strength since doing Asylum. Wendler is a nice gradual program, and was designed to add assistance work and conditioning. If I'm feeling strong after 4 or so weeks I may try some dead-lifts but will exercise caution and common sense.

I have read some threads that seem to think there isn't enough cardio with P90X2. After sampling the first 4 workouts I personally don't think this to be the case, but I may add hill sprints on one of the recovery days. Nothing crazy, just 5-8 times up a grass hill by my house. Clears my head, lets me exercise the dog and gets me outside, something I really miss when I tackle a 90 day program. I have been doing these at night with a headlamp which means I'm going a little slower than full tilt boogie, but having to fully concentrate on what I am doing. Trust me, I'm sucking wind, but also using every fiber of my concentration to not fall down .

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I was planning to paddle board surf but have too much to do to get ready for the big bash I throw for my family. Maybe I'll get the Butcher sled out and do a few pushes (another way to get some quality cardio in a very short amount of time).

Happy Holidays everyone!

I hope everyone is having a nice Christmas. My family is enjoying a quiet day after hosting 30+ people at our house last night. Good times but it feels good to relax. I did get a quick workout in with the Butcher this morning. 10 down and back sprints in my yard, approx 15 yards each way. Sounds easy but it's tough. A great way to get in a short hard workout.

After P90X2 I am going to tackle the hybrid Insanity/P90X workout. How was that workout?

I am starting P90X2 on 1 Jan but have taken the time to skim through all the workouts. At first glance was also concerned about there not being enough cardio. As a triathlete though ( I train the sports but can't race them, bad knee), my plan is to lengthen my weeks by a day or two and keep doing my other activities (mostly running and swimming during January and February) to get in more cardio. Not to worry, I will have recovery days as needed. For the first phase I am only working in a trail run once a week to get a feel for the program. My workouts are already scheduled on paper and my weeks are 8 days long. When I throw in swimming the weeks will go to 9 or 10 days. May sound crazy but continued to run/bike/swim with the other workouts, just have longer week...

I have also done two rounds of P90X, one round of P90Xplus and a round of TurboFire/P90X hybrid. My husband and I hike a lot as well so throw that in the activity mix. I consider myself a P90X junkie now. In between set programs I make my own program and use my arsenal of DVD's to workout. I absoltuely love working out at home now. Don't think I will ever step foot in a gym again!

Can't wait to start P90X2!

Hey there!!! Best of luck with P90X2 on January 1 way to bring in the new year!!!! I am going into my 3rd week of P90X2 and wanted to comment to you about the cardio part. I was concerned with the cardio also because I did Insanity and P90X right before P90X2 BUT I am going to tell you that this is a beast of a workout - it's awesome! I love it so much I was sweating to death from a few of the workouts. The core workouts are just what I needed!! Keep us posted on what you think and your progress!!!!

I loved mixing P90X and Insanity. I did P90X strength workouts and picked 2-3 Insanity or Asylum workouts per week. I tried to keep it simple and gave myself some flexibility on the Insanity days while logging work on the strength days. It was a great approach for the couple months I did it. I even squeezed in some heavy barbell work and was able to maintain my strength.

There are so many options with these workouts, no reason to ever get bored! looking forward to starting with everyone next week!

Good to know about the cardio! In looking through the DVDs there seems to be a ton of core which I am thrilled about! I think this is going to be a great addition to my already intense workout lifestyle. A great way to mix things up. Unfortunately my husband is less than thrilled ( I think he wants the pumping weight stuff ) so may be going this alone which is fine by me! His loss!

Fit Test, pictures and measurements are done! I am a little disappointed in myself letting things go a bit over the holidays. I really wanted to come into P90X2 in the best shape of my life. I was not terribly upset with my fit test but know I could have looked a little better in the pictures had I stayed on track with nutrition over the holidays. Here are the results:

Pull-ups 7
Vertical Leap 14 inches
Push-ups 22
Toe touch + 3.5
Wall squat 75 seconds
Bicep curls 20# 15 reps
In & Outs 40
HR Maximizer 120,90,100,90,90-I think I moved around too much with this.

RE: Going From Good to Excellent with P90X2
1/2/12 1:01 PM as a reply to AmyLarson.
Good Morning! I am so excited to start P90X2 this evening. I got a great night's sleep last night and am ready to go! I had thought I would get up at 4:40 and get my first workout in but decided 8 hours of sleep was more important. Once the kids are back in school tomorrow I will see how things go working out in the morning vs. evening. I like the idea of getting it out of the way, but also like evening workouts followed by a hot shower and cup of herbal tea before bed.

Nutritionally I will be taking the an approach that is between Fat Shredder and Energy Boost depending on how I am feeling. I won't be following the plan exactly, but will be focusing on lean protein and lots of veggies for the first few weeks. I will throw in some sweet potato and some legumes but will pretty much stay away from flour. Bread, pasta etc. tend to weigh me down and I really want to feel my best kicking this program off. I also am a huge advocate of the Results and Recovery Formula post-workout. I did not use this product until I did Asylum in October and found it made a big difference in recovery and soreness prevention. My husband has also found it to be the best recovery drink for cycling, so we easily go through a tub every month.

Shakeology is also my part of my daily nutrition, either as a snack or light meal. I find it works great as an evening meal if my day is busy and I don't want to get filled up before bed, I just try to get plenty of good clean food at breakfast and lunch to fuel the evening workout.

See you in WOWY tonight!

Finally got things kicked off tonight with X2 Core. What an incredible workout! I really struggled when I gave this baby a trial run but felt much better tonight. some of the moves are very difficult but I know with practice I will get better.

Nutrition has been dead-on the last two days and I feel great after a week of wat too much holiday cheer. It is amazing how much better I feel and sleep when I eat clean and get in some good exercise. Finished things off with some Results and Recovery Formula and I am ready to relax a little before bed.

Have a great night everyone!

I joined a P90X2 Challenge Group on Facebook that is proving to be very motivational. If anyone wants to join let me know and I will give you the details. Or, just search for Aaron Mathis and send him a message. Aaron and his wife Jessica are the moderators and are BB veterans, very sweet and inspiring people. Honestly, I have not been this excited or motivated since I first did P90X in 2007!

Plyocide tonight, what a beast. I can't believe there are some out there who don't think there is enough "cardio" in P90X2. I am toast. Not only that but all those balance moves made this a very taxing workout on the central nervous system. All I can say is that this is a very special workout program. I am confident that anyone who sticks with it will see huge benefits.

I am re-thinking adding any more cardio or weights. I truly think it will be too much. Having sampled the first two workouts I was really able to give them max efforts and believe it or not feel ready for the recovery day tomorrow. Most strength and conditioning programs are 5 days per week, why should I mess around with a program?

Nutrition was once again spot-on and I feel great. I made a big pot of soup with grass-fed beef, beans, grains and tomatoes. Delicious! Perfect for a light post-workout dinner.

Have a very early day tomorrow so I'm going to bed early. See you all tomorrow night in WOWY!

I needed Recovery and Mobility tonight in the worst way. I had an 11-hour day at work, didn't even get away for lunch. Thankfully my husband brought me some food. Up until the minute I left I was busy and a little stressed. All the kinks are worked out and I feel so much better. I think tightness increases stress which increases tightness. That is why yoga, stretching and mobility are so important; those routines really help take care of the whole body and mind.

I'm making this an early night, things are going to be busy again tomorrow, and I want to hit Total Body in the a.m.

Total Body: Feelilng it and Loving it!
1/5/12 3:25 PM as a reply to AmyLarson.
Wow, what a difference last night's mobility work made. I was sure I would not feel like working out this morning, but really wanted to get things done early so I gave it a go. I felt amazing. Trust me, I have a long ways to go to get good at this, but the usual soreness, stiffness and lack of mobility I experience in the morning were not there. I was able to up my numbers from my trial run a few weeks ago and feel tired but great right now. Don't discount the Recovery and Mobility work folks, or think you need to add extra work, P90X2 is an excellent program stand-alone! I'm still toying with adding squats and presses one day each per week, but it would be minimal, 3 work sets each. Maybe some hill sprints (5-10) if I'm really feeling like I need to get outside, but nothing major, I want to get the most out of P90X2!

Day 11 Going Strong
1/12/12 1:18 PM as a reply to AmyLarson.
Been missing from the boards for a few days but not my workouts. Total Body X this morning, loved it! Have a hard time with the side-arm balance push-ups on the balls but I will get there! My numbers either improved or my form was better on every exercise.

I did miss Recovery and Mobility yesterday. Got home late and wanted to spend time with the family before going to bed early. At 42 I think sleep is the most important ingredient for success.

My nutrition has been very good. I'm in a lunch group that meets once per month. Yesterday's lunch was fairly healthy (seafood/corn soup and spinach salad) so I enjoyed it. Portions were pretty small so I figure the bit of butter and bread I ate would not derail me. I did eat dessert but it was just a sliver, more a taste really. It is the first dessert I have had in weeks, I didn't even eat any at Christmas. I just don't have much of a sweet tooth at all anymore.

I hope everyone is doing well with their programs, 11 days in and it the 90 days could be feeling like a long time. Hang in there, be sure to have some fun and bring it hard when you push play!

Had the girlfriend crew at my house at 6:00 a.m. for Balance and Power. I'm not sure if they are getting as much out of it as me. This is one of those workouts where what you put in determines what you get out. Since this is the only X2 workout they are doing they don't get the benefits of all the core/balance work. I for one have seen improvement over the last couple weeks, esp. with form. Sometimes my numbers don't go up but I know I am executing the exercises better. I have a lot of strength for a lady (thank you P90X) but X2 is exposing weaknesses that I need to work on. Best of all these workouts are fun!.

Looking forward to R & M tomorrow, I may practice some kettle bell work just for fun. Not really a workout, just a few swings and snatches to stay familiar with the 'bell. I am toying with attending an HKC later this summer. Ultimately I want to become RKC Certified. Lovin' the 'bells, lovin' the X2! Rock on everyone!

Recovery & Mobility today, so glad I did it. An hour seems like a long time but it goes by fast and I feel so good now, rested and motivated to hit Core tomorrow. I'm in a Facebook challenge group and have noticed some people are skipping Recovery and Mobility. Also only spending two weeks on the first phase. I think both are a big mistake. P90X2 is about building a foundation, then strength then athletic superiority. I'm treating like a sports season where I plan on peaking in April. No I'm not competing but the approach is fun and with the improvements I make I should be able to hit the next "season" hard.

Be smart people, take your recovery days and give the first phase enough time.

I just want to spend today's post on saying what an incredible program this is. I have to tell you, I normally start getting a little bored after a couple weeks doing the same thing. It's why I thought Crossfit was so cool. Something different everyday. I know this isn't the best way to approach fitness, you have give your body time to adjust and make gains. It still doesn't change the fact that I really like mixing things up. Something about the X2 workouts has been very different. I was so excited to do X2 Core today, I could just feel that I have made improvements and my performance in the garage was just what I expected. I owned that workout today emoticon! I still struggle on a few moves but even with the modified versions I made improvements.

If you are a BB veteran and thinking of trying out X2 all I can say is DO IT! You will not regret it!

Week 3 Day 2 Plyocide
1/17/12 7:13 AM as a reply to AmyLarson.
I did not want to push play today. The last two weeks have been crazy busy with no end in sight (at least until I get everything done for taxes at work) and I just wanted to chill. But, one of the kids has a music lesson across town tonight and I knew I needed to get it done. I am so glad I did. Something just kicked in after the warm-up and I really got into the groove of this workout today. Anyone who thinks Plyocide is not as good as Plyo X is crazy. They are different, but Plyocide is equally awesome. Maybe better with all the one-leg balance moves. I was a sweaty mess at the end, but feel so good about myself for powering through.

No excuses, push play every day, make it happen and your body will change!
