Doing Insanity gave me stretch marks...anyone else experience this?
I'm 25 and NOT new to working out. I have worked out on and off since I was 13 years old. I did Insanity once last year but had some personal family problems and stopped (but I had amazing results for only going a little over halfway...I lost all my baby weight and then some!). I tried it again last summer, and I got about midway through the program and noticed new stretch marks on my upper thigh and hip area. I had a few before this that were from my teen years, but they were very short and thin. One of the stretch marks I have now that I noticed while doing Insanity is like 2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide! On my leg!! I am SO self conscious about it. I immediately quit doing the program...I really want to start again, but I'm scared to death that I'll get even more marks or that the marks will get longer. The thick one that I refer to is pretty noticeable, and I can see it several feet away when I stand in front of the mirror...

I always thought people were crazy when they said you can get stretch marks from losing weight, but I'm a believer now...I DID NOT have those stretch marks before starting Insanity, and I am one of those people who looks at themselves in the mirror each day...there are even some tiny ones that are almost halfway down the front of my thigh.

BabyMaker: What are your goals with Insanity? Maybe we can achieve the goals with a different program that does not cause you to get marks. This is interesting, I dont think you are the only one with this issue. Would you mind posting pictures of the marks?

I came on here to post about this exact same problem. I went into Insanity already pretty fit (kickboxing a few days a week, cycling 12 miles a few times a week), but after 3 1/2 weeks or so with Insanity I've got 3 bright white marks on one hip and almost 10 (!!!) on the other.

I've never experienced this in my life (and I also used to body build and gained a lot of mass very fast!) It's upsetting because these are permanent! Because I haven't lost a pound with Insanity- just dropped almost 4 pant sizes!- the cause is, I guess, a combination of very rapid loss of fat with gain of muscle in an area that's never experienced either.

For fading, try mederma stretch mark cream. For prevention, all I've been able to glean from internet scouring is keeping the skin that's prone to stretching VERY MOISTURIZED. I've been slathering myself in cocoa butter before bed, and on the marks again in the morning.

Like you, I don't know what to do! I don't want to slow down but I don't want my once-scarless body to get covered in marks!

Edit: Worth mentioning that I'm also female. Perhaps this effects women more than men?

I'm trying to get over it. It is upsetting, but the way I see it...I'd rather be fit and toned with a few marks that will most definitely probably look better once the skin appears taunt from toning up than to just give up.

What I'm trying to do, though, is take it slower and ease into working out. I just am not sure if it was doing Insanity so much or if it was the fact that I started all of a sudden after months of not working out. Maybe it screwed with hormones or something. Not sure. Last week I worked out twice with Insanity, and this week I am going to try 3 times. I am not really modifying my diet yet, but I do not drink Coke anymore as I used to. I used to have several per day or 1 per day when exercising, but I have cut that out due to issues I'm having with my throat...I can't handle the carbonation anymore.

Anyway, one of my theories is that I was working out a lot with Isanity but was eating too much so when I packed on muscle from Insanity, I wasn't losing any fat, so my skin had to stretch because I was just getting bigger but not leaner. The other theory is that I really did just get the marks from working out too much and possibly losing too much weight too fast. I am leaning towards the first theory, though, because I did Insanity once before that (didn't go into the 2nd phase, however, but I never have) and did not get any marks...so for me, I think I ate better the first time around and lost more weight. And I know that part is true, because when I did Insanity the first time I fit into a new pair of pants each week for several weeks, yet that didn't really happen to me the 2nd time.

I hope that by doing Insanity every other day instead of every day for a while will help to still build muscle but not as fast...and the days that I do not do Insanity, I plan on doing straight Cardio with no resistance like in Insanity with the power jumps, etc...just more dance-type stuff from the Firm collection. Hopefully that will help me lose more weight versus doing Insanity every day and building muscle quickly but not really dropping weight until the 2nd month. I know a lot of people on here notice they are more toned the first 30 days, but it is not until the 2nd month that they really drop WEIGHT. I did drop weight my first try with Insanity, but I had just had a baby, so any hardcore activity was probably taxing enough to cause me to drop pounds.

Let me know how you are doing, xearthbalancex. I saw some before and after pix of laser resurfacing for stretch marks on the thighs, and the results tend to be very good. If I get new marks, I may consider doing that. About $300/treatment...may need several, but that's a small price to pay for me to have them shortened and narrowed...
