Faith and Fitness

Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important for it promises a reward in both this life and the next. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NLT)

The above verse is pretty painful for me to read and ponder as I spend so much of my time training my body (both with exercise and nutrition) that I rarely spend time studying the Bible or praying, other then the brief prayer of the likes of “God, please let me live through this round of Plyocide”. I see all sorts of threads on the forum devoted to the various workouts and our fitness journeys, as there should be, but very little which discuss our journeys of faith which should be of our utmost concern.

Please feel free to share where you are on your faith and fitness journey. It doesn’t matter what Beachbody program you are following, or which denomination you happen to belong to. I just wanted a place where we can share with others what is going on in our spiritual journey, and a place where we can encourage each other.

Have a great day!

Kind of bummed this morning. Was really looking forward to doing X2 Shoulders and Arms this morning, but had multiple sick kids in the house last night which kept me awake so I decided to sleep in this morning for some extra rest. Then I realized that I have a dinner meeting tonight, so the chances of me getting my workout in tonight are pretty slim. emoticon I'll try to get out as early as I can and maybe I can still work it in, or at least Turbo Fire HIIT 15.

I am enjoying the change up of P90X2, and the different focus that the program has over the original P90X and even the other Beachbody programs I have completed. The overall athletic performance and "functional fitness" focus I think will fantastic results.

Personally I am going through some trying times and need to focus on Psalm 139: 23-24. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way of everlasting.

Have a fantastic Thursday everyone!

Finished my first full week of Phase II of P90X2, and I can say that I am tired and sore...but in all the good ways. Tomorrow will be a nice recovery day and then back at it for next week.

Have a great Saturday and a terrific Sunday!

My teenage kids and I are in our second round of Insanity and we love it. We try to promote physical and spiritual growth in our home, as I tell the kids our body is a temple given to us by God that we can use correctly or abuse. Glad to see a like minded poster on the board. Have a nice day!

I finished up my first round of P90X2 last week and really enjoyed it. Today I started a brand new round of P90X. I've incorporated some of the ideas of P90X2 into this round, such as doing my pushups on med balls and think that in Phase III I'll actually do the P90X2 Phase II workouts for even more muscle confusion.

I hope all is going well with everyone, have a fantastic Monday!

Starting up a new round of P90X on Monday, June 18. If anybody would like to join me with P90X, or any other fitness program, please feel free. My verse for this round will be Phillipians 4:13 "I can do all things through him who gives me strength". This will be very important for me to really on His strength as I not only go through the workouts, but also the nutrition aspect, work, commute, and most importantly have the time and energy to spend with my wife and daughters.

I promise to post more regularly, and will also include updates on my journey to read the Bible in 1 year, following a chronological plan. I am on day 40 and am in Exodus. I found the book of Job to actually be pretty enjoyable, but I appreciate sarcasm which I found this book to be full of.

Have a great Wednesday!

I'm currently reading 5 Psalms and 1 Proverb chapter each day...I am amazed everyday at the beautiful world God created and believe he created us to be physically active and eat from the goodness He provided with vegetable, fruits, nuts, fish...etc.

Barry...I am on Exodus 34. Is this your first round of P90X? How are the results going for ya?

Steve...I've read at least a chapter of Psalms and 1 chapter of Proverbs each day before. My problem is that I tend to miss it one day, and then it takes my months to get back on track. What I like about the program I'm currently on for scripture reading is that my reading for the day, including the passages themselves, are emailed to me. So, when I open up my emails in the morning my scriptures are there and ready to read. I agree with you, the more you think about it the more in awe you are of all that God has provided.

I'm getting my workout space in order (having just moved and still unpacking boxes, I need to get all my stuff in one place) and will be ready to start on Monday.

Have a great Thursday!

This round of P90X is going great so far, not too sore for the first week. But, tomorrow is Legs/Back and I always feel that for a couple of days afterword. I still do not have a spot for pullup bars, so I'll have to rely on the bands for those moves, but I have been wearing my weighted vest for the push-ups and will use it for extra resistance on legs day. I also just ordered Body Beast, and am really looking forward to giving that one a shot. If I get it soon I can have a round of that completed by the time I turn...gulp...42.

Have a great Thursday!

Ended up taking a couple of days off...my knees have really been hurting so I didn't do any real workouts this past weekend, now it's time to get back at Chest and Back.

Barry...I purchased Body Beast as well. I'm looking to get started as soon as it arrives, and it looks like it was shipped out Friday, and looks like I'll get it by Friday of this week. Interested in starting up on Monday July 2? Also, I've kind of fallen behind on my readings, so I'm not in Leviticus yet. I'm finishing up with Exodus and then will be in Lev. I'll get caught back up somehow. And, congratulations on your youngest graduating from high school!

Have a great Monday!

Chest/Back and ARX yesterday. Mixed in a little P90X2 type moves by doing most of the pushups on 4 med balls, and while wearing my 20lb weighted vest. For the Lawnmowers, back flys and Heavy Pants I pulled as heavy as I could to get ready for Body Beast. Obviously I'll not finish this round of P90X as I want to jump right in when I can.

Barry...I'll have to check out your group for Body Beast to get started. I'm looking forward to getting my copy so I can check it out and get the "stuff" I'm going to need. I know I'm going to need heavier weights...guess I'll be checking out Craigslist. I'm at around Chap 30 of Exodus, so I should be ready to start Leviticus pretty soon....I'll shoot for Monday to start that as well, or even later this week.

Have a great Tuesday!

Began Body Beast last week and am on week 2. A completely different type of workout then what I am used to and I am enjoying it. I have limited equipment so have been using the DBs and stability ball instead of a bench. However, after a few days of using the stability ball I broke down and got an incline bench which has made my life in Beastland a bit easier, if there is such a thing.

I've made it through Exodus and am into Leviticus. I've been taking my time going through the chapters and doing some additional research as I read. There are so many minor details that are stressed and repeated over and over and there has to be significance to this. I was talking with my wife about this over dinner and she did point out that God is a God of order and not chaos, so those seemingly small details in the design of priestly garments, design of the temple, etc do show order. What I found very interesting was that some theologians think that the acacia wood (which has thorny branches) that was used in construction of the ark and temple may have been the same type of wood that was fashioned into the crown of thorns on Jesus head, the ultimate Temple. I just find it pretty fascintating how everything in the Bible is all so interconnected. It also helps to keep me from being bored to tears reading over and over about the proper way to sacrifice a dove, which is pretty gruesome by the way.

Have a great Tuesday!

Now into the Bulk phase of Body Beast and completed Bulk: Arms today. At first I thought I would need more weights then what I have, but today's workout humbled me, especially the tricep work. Yikes, I had to drop weight on those to make it through the progressive sets. But, for some of the back and leg workouts I will need to invest in some more and heavier weights, and an EZ curl bar. Shoulders is tomorrow and I know I'll be ready for my first rest day of the Bulk phase on Saturday.

Just finished reading Deuteronomy and am now in Joshua. To be honest I guess I have never really read Deuteronomy and there are some great things in that book. There are some odd things in there, such as rules on the proper disposal of excrement which I suppose if practical, and some very inspiring things in there as well and reminders that the Word is Life. Starting Joshua, and the thing that sticks out most in Joshua 1 is over and over being told to be strong and courageous. So, as you start a new workout program, continue on a program, or where ever you may be, remember to be Strong and Courageous for God is with you on the journey.

Have a great day!

Started a brand spanking new round of P90X this morning, actually attempting a P90X/Insanity Hybrid so this should be fun. Day one in the books, and I can't wait for the soreness to really set in. I already can barely lift my arms, so I can't wait to see how I feel in the morning.

I'm still making progress on my reading through the Bible in one year. I am a couple of weeks behind, but am catching up and am just about to the halfway point as far as 6 months into it, but still am in Kings and Chronicles. Man the Old Testament is long. I've also been in a really indepth study of the book of Genesis since September, and it will go all the way until May. One thing I can say is that it is so refreshing to see that even though the main "heroes" of the Bible are complete screw ups full of numerous flaws and problems...God still loves them. God even provides opportunity after opportunity for those who reject him to reconcile themselves with God.

Have a fantastic Monday!

Doing well this week so far on this new P90X/Insanity hybrid. Day 2 was actually pretty tough doing Insanity Plyo a day after Chest and Back. I was pretty sore from the day before, and all of those plank style moves in Round 2 of Plyo Cardio Circuit fried me. Yoga today, which I will do this evening after I have loosened up a bit (I struggle greatly with Yoga at 5:30 am...at least that's what I told myself so I could get an extra hour of sleep.)

I was just reading something the other day in 1 Kings 18 that kind of jumped out at me. It's the story of Elija and how he had just confronted the prophets of Baal and had sent King Ahab ahead of him in the kings chariot to Jezreel. At the end of the chapter it said that the power of the Lord came upon Elijah and that he ran and beat Ahab to Jezreel. Mind you, Ahab had a head start and was in a chariot and Jezreel was 17 miles away. Elijah outran him on foot. What was going through his head as he was running that fast? Did it look more like a cartoon, or slo-mo like The Six Million Dollar Man? Hmmm...could I get some of that power to make it through a P90X workout?

Hope you're all having a great week.

Thank you for this thread ... I missed church yesterday but I had time to go to a Yoga class. My priorities need to be adjusted and reading your thread helped bring some needed perspective. I make my workouts a priority, I need to make God and family as priority as well.

God Bless

In my final week of Phase 1 of this round of P90X. I kind of lost track of how many rounds I've done, but this is my first round of this type of Insanity/P90X hybrid. So far it's going well. Thanksgiving provided only a minor hiccup in the nutrition plan. For some reason I feel it is my responsibility to eat all the left over pie because I do not want to see it go to waste...kind of crazy.

Started a more indepth study into Abraham as I follow the year long study on Genesis, and also still making progress on my reading through the Bible chronologically in 1 year. I'm at day 191 and still in the Old Testament. I will say, reading it this way it makes a lot more sense as you see how things actually relate to each other.

Eric, glad to see that you have found this thread helpful. It helps me to keep me focused on my priorities, both physical and spiritual. I agree that sometimes its much easier for me to find time to workout then it is to find time to read and pray, or even to go to Church. But, if you continue to seek Him and work to make time with God, your family and working out it will all fall together. One thing that I have seen over and over again in my study of Genesis and in the Old Testament so far is how gracious God is, and all he is asking for is a heart that seeks him. Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon...they all screwed up in major ways but God was always there with outstretched arms when they turned to Him. I find that so encouraging, so when I miss time with Him, or miss Church, I know he is there.

Have a great Tuesday everyone!
