Newbie Question: Starting p90x and Training fo My Next Half Marathon

Sunday, January 15, 2012
I usually recommend on your first round to stick with the program as close to how it's presented as possible. I wouldn't change out programs for the first 90 days. So with that said if I were you I would take the first 2 weeks and just do p90x...no running. Then if you are committed to training for your half marathon don't think of yourself doing p90x. Follow the p90x schedule and do the workouts as cross training with your half training as your primary workout. Don't do plyo or legs and back on your long run days! If you don't have to train for the half I would just do the p90x as the primary focus and if you finish a p90x workout for the day and still feel like you want more cardio (it happens) go for a 2-3 mile run. That is a good distance for maintaining fitness without recovery interference. If you have been running forever and you know that 5 miles recovery is the same as 2 for you? Go for it! Just keep pressing play....I wouldn't mix the half training on your first round...but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Phase 1 Nutrition versus Bringing it when the fat is gone.
beachbody workout calories fitness nutrition shakeology weight loss workouts phase 1 carbs phase one energy level fruits and vegetables macros good fats 1st phase diet fitter high protein low carbs macos safety net whole grains fruits and vegetables
2/3/12 8:27 AM as a reply to alfasunshine.
I would recommend being more concerned about the macros initially. Phase one eating is high protein low carbs. Since you have plenty of extra body fat to get you through your workouts you can probably get away with the high protein low carb workout for a good couple of weeks at least. Your workouts will start to be more demanding as you get used to the movement and you will start bonking on your workouts and need more carbs to support them. That's when you want to increase your carbs. Beachbody generally recommends and 40% carbs 40% protein and 20% fat for weight loss. You can tinker with the calories depending on your fitness level and the amount of extra weight you are carrying.

The more fit you are the more good carbs you need to Bring it! on your workouts. It is counter intuitive but the fitter you are the more you need to eat to lose weight. It's not the number of calories as much as what you are eating that counts. Lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables and good fats...don't stuff yourself. Do phase one eating for as long as you can as often as you can as it will get you cut...just make sure you are drinking all your water and Shakeology helps because it is a great safety net for making sure you are balanced nutritionally. Listen to your body and pay attention to your energy level of your workouts...when you are bonking you need more good carbs.

Going from Junk Food Junky to Food Nazi in 5 months or less.
meal plan junk food grocery list morning snack avocados grocery store healthy foods olive oil lean protein fruits and vegetables afternoon snack sparkpeople good fats 5 months whole grains fruits and vegetables substitute tofu food tracker food porn checkout line sups

Think of your eating in percentages. How clean do you eat now? If you are a 100% junk food junky and all you eat is food porn...don't be too hard on yourself. When you eat 5 times a day (Breakfast, morning snack, Lunch, afternoon snack, and Dinner) start with one meal like Breakfast and make it your 100% clean meal for the first month. Each month work on the next meal.

Eating clean is eating: lean protein (substitute tofu or other protein sups for animal if you are vegetarian), whole grains, fruits and vegetables, good fats (eg olive oil, avocados, butter...) ...don't stuff yourself. It all begins and ends at the grocery store. Don't get into the checkout line with anything but: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and good fats in your cart.

The food trackers on Beachbody has a great meal plan tool that will auto-populate your meal plan on the tracker. You can create a grocery list too. I strongly recommend using it to help you find healthy foods that you like.

No. I haven't really looked at it closely, but I think that is for someone with extremely low body fat who is extremely working out. I don't fall under either category...maybe you do maybe you do not.

These photos are from the 2010 ATP 250 Tournament at UCLA in Los Angeles California. I took a lot of photos of my favorite players as I found them practicing and working out and playing. I especially liked taking pictures of them serving. I'd love to improve my serve.

I posted a lot of my tennis photos from Indian Wells and Los Angeles on my Facebook page and a guy from Bakersfield ended up suggesting 4000 friends (no just 400). It's been a lot of fun embracing my love for watching professional tennis and promoting tennis now in my community.

Do You Need a Heart Rate Monitor?
insanity heart rate monitor easy peasy bells and whistles sporting goods stores
2/12/12 9:32 AM as a reply to alfasunshine.
Honestly I only wore my heart rate monitor in the last year seriously for my first round of Insanity because it was a new program and it was so intensely anaerobic. Let's just say that the heart-rate monitor confirmed that I needed to make modifications often compared to the folks falling out on the screen. Get a heart rate monitor. I like the wristband easy peasy one that has enough bells and whistles on it but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Most local sporting goods stores carry a good selection. If you are new to knowing your limits you may find that a heart-rate monitor is very helpful. The old self monitoring scale of how you feel is my general m. o.

I got a really good deal the last time I bought a heart rate monitor. I got a really nice stainless steel water bottle with it for free. My heartrate monitor is virtually a no name brand, but it has all the bells and whistles that I ever use. It is a wrist watch style. I didn't have a very big budget last time I shopped for a heart rate monitor. It will hopefully last a couple of years.

My wrist watch heart rate monitor has like five or six screens besides the stick your fingers on the watch to get your immediate heart rate. To be honest I only know how to use the two screens that I use. The watch and the calorie counting function screen. I like the multi functions of the calorie counting screen because it gives my heart rate, how many calories I have burned and how long I have been working out all on one screen. The stick your fingers on the watch and get my immediate heart rate doesn't work great...so it is good that the calorie counting screen keeps my heartrate on there when I am working out. I think the immediate finger measurement works best when I am working out. I don't know if it is because that is when my heart rate is raised and more detectable or if it is my body heat or moisture while working out...either way that is the first thing that is not working great on my cheapo heart rate monitor.

I bought a fancy body fat measurer like they have at the gym. I don't like using it. Body fat measurment isn't my favorite measurement. I blame it on my body type. A good pair of denim jeans suits me better...denim doesn't lie.
