Knee Pain?
3/27/12 12:28 PM
Has anyone experiences any type of knee pain from doing insanity? I'm into month 2 week 3 and have some pain in my knees. I don't know if i'm not landing soft enough or what, but it's in both knees! any tips or advice? Thanks!

I am not a health professional....I like to caveat responses to these messages with that, so it is known to take the info with a grain of salt.

Have you tried googling the exactly how your knee feels? Depending on location, it could be quite a few different things. When I used to run alot, I had alot of pain on the sides of both of my knees. It felt like the tendon was stretch way to tight, and I would have to have my wife massage the inner and outside of my knees every night. When I got it checked out, the Doc told me it was Iliotibial Band Sydrome. I've also had a near injury during a session on non-insanity lunges, where I lunged forward, and didn't come back up, because of a sharp pain that struck beneath my knee cap. Still not sure what that was...

I don't know if that is anything of the sort in which you are experiencing, but I hope that it puts your mind in the right direction for researching the symptoms you are feeling. Some knee pains are more serious that others.

I'm in the same shape, BeckyJS. I'm in month 2, week 1. Both knees hurt when I walk up and down the stairs.

I am on week 3 of the 2nd month. My friend and I both have knee pain. Before Insanity, I biked and ran (and will return once Insanity is over)...and never had this knee pain. Just hoping all is well in a week when I go back to my normal workout routine!
Too many lunges? squats? I know my form is good, and I land softly and with lightly.. hummm???

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I feel the pain under my knee caps, i mention it to my mom who has been a nurse for many years and she mention the word acl! yikes! It just so happens that I came down with a cold and have to take a few days off from working out emoticon
I'll let you all know if some rest helps! But thankyou to everyone for helping me out!

Seriously look into your shoes. I made the mistake of using an old pair of shoes for running to do Insanity...these shoes were used for almost a YEAR!. Then I was wondering why my knees were incredibly painful to do anything. Unfortunately it took me until my last week in the program to realize I needed new shoes...but two workouts with the new shoes and I'm already feeling so much better.

I have a pair of New Balance 646 that I'm using for Insanity. They are not cross trainers. They are highly cushioned walking sneakers.

Is it ok to use these? They are very cushiony and provide a lot of support

Insanity is pretty rough on your knees. You do A LOT of jumping. There isn't a good way around that.

However, you knees shouldn't be feeling too bad. Always be wary of your form first and foremost. Always track the knees in line with the toes (but don't go in front of the toes), when you're doing your squats and power jumps and whatever else.

Another thing I would say, I've been doing the foam rolling routine from P90X2. And it's made a big difference in how my knees feel. Tony does a great job instructing through a good foam rolling sequence. I've only been doing it for 2.5 weeks I guess, 2 times a week basically. But I can definitely tell a difference in how my knees feel doing Insanity now compared to my first round.

So that might be something worth exploring.

Aside from that always make sure you do the cooldown stretch. Don't skip out on it, that will help all your muscles and your knees.

My knees hurt a lot during Month 1 (Just finished Recovery Week today). I am not a Doctor so I would recommend you get it checked out because one person's minor pain may be another persons major injury.

I did read that someone recommended doing Insanity barefoot. As crazy as it sounds, it worked out great for me. I also do it on a non-slip Yoga mat on top of carpeting. The softer the surface, the softer the landing. I stopped using Motrin after I switched to barefoot and don't need the 20 minutes of ice that I put on as well.

Again, it worked for me but use on your own accord.

Good luck and keep pushing through.

I am a doctor and it sounds as if the knee joints are being strained. It's essential you make sure you land softly, as Shaun T says, and I would absolutely agree that cushioned sports footware is a must if you're knees hurt. If that doesn't sort it you should see your doctor as it's difficult to be 100% sure what's going on without examining you

I am experiencing the same thing. The whole knee hurts. Not really when walking but if I try to walk up the stairs. Weirdly though when I'm doing the workouts it doesn't hurt during.

I have to same pain. Just keeping an eye on it and noticing that it is subsiding slowly. I avoid stairs right now though! Nothing during workouts either.

The same thing happened to me at the beginning of month 1. Moving into the recovery week I had considerably less pain in my knees almost like they got used to the workouts. Then I started month 2, lol. I'm right back where I started now and will again be icing nightly.

I am at the end of week one. I have knee stiffness, but not pain yet. I have soft shoes, soft insoles, extra floor matting, I land softly, and I don't do all the jumps (I modify sometimes, but still get my heart rate up).

I also am dipping into the glucosamine chondroitin that I have on hand. In the past when I have had kneecap pain, I would take one and the pain would go away. I hope to wean myself off of it next week. I read that it helps with repair and does not mask the pain, but may not be good for regular usage. Google it and decide for yourself.

The knee stiffness is mostly gone by the next day, I think.

I get similar knee stiffness when I run a mile with my dog everyday. Some days I take off and the sensation goes away.

The impact of insanity with the new shoes and floor mats seems a lot softer than my running shoes on the pavement, even when I run softly heel-toe.

Me too, the first month my knees were hurting and then it started again, this is my 2nd month, I just finished the first week, so hopefully, my knees will get used to these new longer routines, plus, i'm working out on my Yoga mat to help cushion my jumps and trying to land softly and keep my knees behind my toes. So much pain to look good lol.
