Best Shoes for Insanity?
4/17/12 6:54 AM
I think the shoes that I currently am wearing aren't all that great for Insanity. They are New Balance "All-Terrain" and they hurt the arch of my foot. Should I keep these and try to get inserts or should I just switch shoes all together?

For what it's worth, I use FiveFingers because it gives the calves a good workout, but if your arches are already weak, then you'll either need to wear the FFs for a couple of weeks until you're comfortable with it.

How do the shoes hurt your arches? Not enough support, or too much of it?

You need to find a cross training shoe most likely. Antenox has a good point about the FiveFingers, as they will help strengthen your feet and legs more, but they will take some serious getting used to.

I honestly don't know if there is too much or too little support. I have always wanted to try the FiveFingers, but I believe I may have shin splints in my right leg, so I wonder if those will make it worse? The pain has been going away and I've been stretching my calves a lot to help make it better.

I can highly recommend Nike Free TR2's. One of the things that I really like about them is that they have some small protrusions on the outside of the sole to prevent overpronation. I have a fairly neutral gait, but there's a lot of sideways motion in INSANITY. The TR2's have saved me from rolling over on my ankle several times during 1-2-3's.

They also have a very flexible sole, so they're great for floor work - especially exercises in the plank position.

Hope that helps?

I haven't tried Vibrams Five Fingers for Insanity, and I don't know that I'd recommend them.

Five Fingers work great for running, and for a lot of traditional resistance training (they're wonderful for deadlifts), but for high-impact, plyo-oriented training like Insanity, you want the additional shock absorption that comes with a quality cross-training shoe, along with the added stability that comes with a thicker shoe and base.

I personally have a pair of Asics GEL170-TR's which were a major improvement over the running shoe I'd used previously. But don't take my word alone (or anyone else's) - try a couple stores with different brands and styles, and find one that's comfortable for the size and contour of your foot. Just remember that running shoes are not synonymous with cross-trainers, and I'd be wary of any sales clerk that tells you otherwise.

Good Morning

Not sure "Trail Shoes" are the best for Insanity, but they aren't bad either. Doing the football drill, heisman and 1-2-3 alone give you a lot of "side to side" movements, so you may want a cross training shoe. What you might want to do is go to a speciality shoe store to find a shoe that's best for your foot.

Also, if you're interested, check out my new thread. I found a bunch of Insanity people (and others and have brought them in to one forum)

Do yourself a favor and go to Road Runner Sports or another running store and have them test you and fit you for shoes. They look at your arch height, your gait, your stride and your pressure points to determine the right shoes for you. It is well worth the effort and your feet and legs will thank you for it!

Thanks everyone. I will visit a shoe store tonight and see what I can find. I didn't think my All-Terrain shoe was all that great, so hopefully I can find a good cross trainer! emoticon

I would highly recommend a great court shoe...my personal fav is Asics. You need something to support your foot when you're moving side to side.

Wow. I thought I was the only one using the TR2's! They are GREAT for lateral movements and if you replace the insoles, its great for the plyometrics involved.

I'm about to get me some Nike Vapor Trainers as a reward for myself and to use for Insanity: Asylum

I work out in Vibram's and love them, but I'm not sure if I would recommend it to an Insanity beginner. (Shaun also echos that sentiment in a recent video chat of his)

I will never workout in anything but the Vibram's but if you haven't been wearing them it will make things pretty difficult on you, and as one of the other posters said they don't offer as much shock absorption for all of the plyometric movements you do in Insanity. It's fine to use them, but it puts an even heavier emphasis on form, which can be difficult to master your first time through.

Reebok Ziggs are the best I've seen around. Insanity is very vertical with a lot of plyometrics and impact to the knees and joints. They do an amazing job at protecting your body and feel very comfortable, also providing great lateral support for moves like heismans or 123 heismans etc.

Hi,

I hope that I can help you. My wife and I have been doing insanity for a few years and t25 since it came out. We love the workouts. I was using running shoes Nike lunar glides. Had trouble with lateral movements as well as stress on the joints In my knees as running shoes put your body into a forward starting position. With Plyo tuck jumps and diamond jumps the heel to toe drop on a running shoe is actually detrimental to your body's natural movement. Get a shoe that supports hour body's natural movements. My blog at http://beachbooty.net has my review of the best shoes I have worn for insanity and what my wife uses and has worn. Hope you find it helpful! "Dig Deeper!"

I totally agree. I posted about this probably a year ago without good results. Try some on and do some of the insanity moves with them on. A running shoe is not for this workout. You are doing a lot of jumping. Look at Basketball shoes.

I did try the Reebok Ziggs and like them a lot. I was having pain in my feet from the workouts.
