Meal Ideas
4/25/12 9:04 AM
Hi everyone,

I'm planning on starting my first round of Insanity in a few days. My goal is to lose about 10-15 pounds. I plan on working on my diet as well since I don't typically eat very well, but I have a few concerns with the meal examples in the Insanity nutrition guide:

1) Too many meals involve cooking. There's no way I'll be able to cook meals 2-4
2) A lot of the salad/rice bowls have no dressing or sauce of any kind. I'm fine with finding a low cal option, but I know I won't be able to consistently eat such bland meals.

So, basically, I need ideas for easy meals that are tasty enough to motivate me to continue eating well. For meals 2-4, I need either no-cook options, or things I can prepare the night before and reheat. Ideally, I would be able to pack meals 2-4 the night before, so things that will remain fresh for 12-20 hours would be great.

I was planning on shooting for about 1500 calories per day.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hey mysticfire,

Why cant you cook 2-4 meals? I dont eat too many salads but when i do i use pepper for taste and not dressing.

Easy snacks are:

Jerky
Almonds
Protein bars
Fruits
Wheat crackers
ETC....

Shakeology is also something I highly recommend and has helped my wife and i out alot with your weight control and fitness.

Let me know if you have any questions, I will be glad to help you out in any way that I can :-)

Just wondered! emoticon Sometimes people underestimate their calories when they do Insanity. Also, I ended up buying a little lunch box to carry with me when I did Insanity so I could get all of my meals in and eat when i needed to. emoticon It helped a LOT!

By not being able to cook, I mean I don't have access to a kitchen between 8-5. So anything I eat between then can only involve a microwave and a fridge.

I can cook the night before and/or use leftover's from meal 5 as a meal the next day, but I also don't want to spend hours every night cooking and preparing meals, because I don't have the time and know I won't be consistent. I do like to cook up a bunch of chicken and divide it into 4-6 ounce portions to freeze and throw in salads.

Sorey: that would be great if you could send me recipes. Can you do it thru the website or do you need my email? I calculated my calorie requirement using the Insanity formula and moderately active and I believe it was about 1550 (though I did knock 10 pounds off my weight because I don't think my fat needs nutrition).

Oh and I do have the tropical shakeology, but would prefer to limit it to one serving a day. I've been having it as my breakfast because its easy (I usually just use water), but might try to save it for one of my mid-day meals. I just don't think I'll be able to add anything other than water since I won't have a blender.

A few things:

1. I started month 2 of Insanity this week and my one regret for month 1 was not following the nutrition guide better. I ate a TON better than I normally do, but I thought the calories were too high so I cut back and I didn't figure out the protein/carb balance. I have about 20 lbs to lose and I only lost 3 lbs in month 1 - and that was at around 1500 cal/day.

2. You need to eat more than 1500 a day. Period. Unless you are super tiny, I'm guessing 1500 is not what the nutrition guide recommends. Think of it this way: You need roughly 1600 calories to break even, not lose weight and not gain. Add Insanity to the mix and burn about 500-700 calories a day. That leaves you with around 900 calories to fuel your body through the toughest workout imaginable. Not Enough. You're body will start burning muscle to replenish itself and you'll hang onto your fat and won't lose the right kind of weight if you lose anything at all.

3. Meal ideas for work: Make your own instant oatmeal with quick oats, raisins, protein powder, whatever you like. Greek yogurt and granola is quick and satisfying. I think saving your shake for work is a great idea - eat some eggs and spinach for breakfast! emoticon

4. I just started using myfitnesspal.com and I can not recommend it enough. When you sign up, go to home>goals>custom settings and change the carbs/protein/fats ratio to 40/40/20% instead of what they have in there and log your meals. It's a GREAT way to see if you are getting enough protein/carbs if you aren't able to stick strictly to the meal plan.

5. Cook in bulk, plan ahead. I always make extra food and portion it out into tupperware for the fridge.

Good luck! You're already ahead of the game by figuring this out before you begin! Results are 70% diet, 30% exercise! You're going to do great! Can't wait to see your final results!!

You really do need to eat alot, but maybe not as much as the Insanity guide say, but it depends on your goals.I started Insanity taking in way too few calories and was crashing hard by late morning. When I upped my calories, my energy immediately went up. I definitely could have done better, as I've learned since, but this is a lifelong deal, so I have time.

Hey Mike,
I sent you a buddy request; I follow the guide pretty well but as posted earlier by someone else, I'm super tired of the same recipes and it is extremely time consuming working out the correct meals with the right balance and calorie count. I try to get in 1500 calories a day but honestly probably only get in MAYBE 900 due to being so busy with my job and infant son. To make it worse, I have to wake up at 3:40 in the morning just to workout so not only am I tired but I haven't fueled my body so I can't push as hard as I know I can. The first round on Insanity I lost 12 inches and 15 pounds and this time after the first month I only lost 5 1/2lbs and 4 inches. I realize I don't have as much to lose this time but it's frustrating not having better results. I'm with you that this is lifelong thing for me as well as long as my knee lets me so I have time but I'd like to get much better results in month two this round. Thanks!!!

The 2nd round is always so much harder than the first time through.
You've gotta eat though. It's keeps your body going. I get up really early to have time to workout too, but if I don't eat enough, I'm pretty useless.
