Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Since you’ll be getting this after probably consuming more calories in a day than you normally eat in a week, it seems like a good time to talk about superfoods. One cool little pig out factoid should be good news to most of you; the healthier you are the less those crazy meals will affect you. The key is to get back to normal right away. If you do this, your body can’t react to eating 10,000 calories other than to rid itself of most of them. So Thanksgiving can be a free pass if you play your cards right. Just don’t make it Thanksgiving weekend.

As for me, there will be no pigging out since I’ve got my challenge coming up this weekend. To add another experience to it, I’ve also come down with a cold. Should be challenging!

Also, remember, I’m shooting for 470 people to WOWY with me. I’ll be logged in during my entire challenge all night and day and night, beginning at 12:01 Friday night/Sat morning, the 24th. Make sure and stop by. We’ll be giving away even more money than usual:

Now let’s get to some questions:

================================

I'm looking for two articles that I read a while back and the website isn't allowing me to open the links. They are "Should You Exercise When You're Sick" and "10 Tips for Restful Sleep". I receive the newsletter already, but I can't seem to access these older articles. Are they still available?
Thanks,
Natasha Collins

======================================

Sorry about this! We’ve updated our server and all of our old links are broken. We’re trying to find a global fix but we may end up having to do it by hand, which will take some time. Here is the new newsletter archive, so you can dig through and find whatever you’re looking for. This is a pretty big pain for all of you Message Board users, I know, and I’m sorry. We’ll sort it out as soon as we can. As it makes the advisors and coaches’ jobs easier, this is a top priority for us.

Hi Steve, just read the article, another great one… Question for you: which is better – peanut butter or almond butter?

Thanks,
Sonia

I love reading your great articles!

I wish though, when you put peanut butter at the top of your list, that you had differentiated between pure peanut butter, and the stuff sold in most stores, which contains, among other things, a lot of icing sugar! Surely we don't need to be encouraged to consume that!

Wendy Ewert

I am surprised you mention peanut butter over almond.
Most people have allergies to peanuts and they turn rancid very fast.
On my diets for Candida ,CFS and cleanses peanuts are omitted.
Thank you for your time,

Suzanne

==================================

I got a lot of similar questions, so I’ll answer them all in one. Peanuts are a legume, not a nut, as almonds are. They have slightly different nutrient profiles. Nuts are, in generally, great for you. Not really better or worse for you than legumes; just a different food. Both are a great addition to a healthy diet.
No matter what type of butter you choose, it should have no other ingredients except, perhaps, salt. Most of the “leading brands” of “peanut butter” and actually called peanut spreads and are basically junk food and filled with fun stuff like hydrogenated oils (like you need to add fat to a peanut) and high fructose corn syrup. Why people ever buy this stuff is a mystery to me.
Peanut allergies, while common, are a long way from “most”. Some people are very allergic to peanuts and it’s hard to say exactly why, though many point to poor agriculture practices and the fact that many peanuts are now genetically modified. While you need to use caution with peanuts, the same could be said for many of the standard foods we find in our daily diets these days.

Where does kiwi fruit fit in all of this - I thought that was the superfood.

Marta

=======================================

As I said in the intro, there are no real superfoods for every single person. Kiwi fruit is great, as are most fruits, but it’s not something that will make or break your diet. Here’s a bit more on this subject:

Hello,

I'm wondering what your take on cashews is. I eat an ounce or two a day. I really like them but I'm wondering how fat they are?

Scott

====================================

So far as nuts go they are at the lower end of the totem pole; a bit higher in calories and fat than the more highly prized supernuts, walnuts and almonds. However, they are still a very healthy food. The only downside is their density. It’s pretty easy to eat a thousand calories of them in a sitting, which would make balancing your diet tough. In moderation, they are great.

Hi-
Not to be nit-picky, but on the "Superfoods IQ" test, # 4, was there are over 10,000 varieties of mushrooms. I answered, "True." The given answer was, "False.", but, I was right. There are over 38,000 varieties; which means there are over 10,000 varieties. Get it?! No biggie. Just wanted to connect. Great site!

Thanks. We got a lot of these. Way to stay alert! As one of the many people who allowed this to get through, I’m sorry.

How does one include Quinoa and Spelt into their diet? I actually do have these in my pantry (long story) but have no idea how to incorporate them in a "realistic" meal. Would like some recipes that would work for a busy mom serving fairly picky kids.

Thanks,
Patty Knavel

Are raw or cooked mushrooms better for you? Also, where can you find Natto and how do you prepare it so it is appealing?

Thanks!
The Deshlers
Your article said that cinnamon is helpful in lowering
blood sugar if you have type 2 diabetes. Since
cinnamon is generally found in dessert type foods, any
suggestions on how to consume it in a healthy way and
is the powdered cinnamon you find in the spice aisle
suffecient to use?

The paragraph on Natto. What form is it in and how bad
does it taste? I eat raw soy beans steamed as a side
vegetable and use soy protein powder in my fruit
smoothies. How does the fermented Natto differ?

Thank you,
Bonnie McDonald

=================================

I’m no cook, but we’ve got plenty of great ones on the Message Boards, so I’m sending you there for how to get the most out of these questions.

http://forums.milliondollarbody.com/eve/ubb.x?cdra=Y&s=528299664

In general, both quinoa and spelt can be used in pretty much anything that you use other grains for. I eat em plain, like rice, but I’m sure that’s too boring for most of you.

Raw foods are almost always better than cooked unless we’re trying to eliminate pathogens, such as in some meats. In general, the more you cook something the more nutrients it loses.

Natto can and will be a tough adjustment for many of you. But any fermented soy is pretty darn healthy. Here are some other fermented soy products to choose from. For Natto, I would consult a Japanese market or do some web searching to learn more about it and your options.

• Miso
• Tempeh
• Soy sauces
• Fermented tofu and soymilk

Dear Steve,

I receive the BeachBody email news letter and recently read the article about the 10 Foods You Should Eat. I agree with your article but would like to make you aware of some additional information about the flours you recommend.

I actually produce both organic and non-organic baking flours. The absolute most nutritious flour to use is sprouted flour. This is flour that has actually had the grain sprouted before milling it into flour. Once the grain has sprouted it has turned into a vegetable. That is the simple explanation but if you so desire I will gladly send you additional information about sprouted flours and the various differences and benefits with Quinoa and spelt.

Sprouted flour has been around forever, but only recently has there been enough health awareness to actually get commercial flour mills to produce it. The American Institute of Baking actually regulates the flour milling industry in our country and has long known that sprouted flour is by far the healthiest flour to use. However, like many government regulated items, the lesser expensive standard flour is the food of choice and usually the only one known to most of us.

I hope to hear from you to continue this discussion. If you like, I can send you a sample bag. Check out our website at essentialliving.com. This is not our mill web site but our retail and education site.

Peter Eckman

====================================

Thanks, Peter. While an ad it’s still very useful information about healthier eating and where to find such option.

===================================

I found this article to be very interesting. Do keep me posted on such matters. Thanks Brenda

====================================================

That’s what we do, Brenda, so keep reading.

Have a great holiday weekend and see y’alll in WOWY,

Steve
