Hi all!

I am considering Turbo Kick certification, and a date has just been announced in my area that works for me!

I am seeking information about how easy or difficult it was for you to get a part time instructor position at a club without other fitness certifications. I have a full time career completely unrelated to the fitness industry, but I love Turbo Jam and am interested in being involved in the live classes.

I think I will do the certification either way because it will be great to have access to additional Turbo workouts, but how realistic is teaching Turbo Kick as a hobby?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi

I work full time in a boring old office. At the ripe old age of 42 I got certified and I am loving every minute of it. I started with TJ, then went to a live class and was instantly hooked.

I have no AFAA etc certs and had never taught aerobics before. I wanted to teach TK in a non gym environment aimed at women who wouldn't set foot in a gym. I spoke to the owner of a local health store who has an extra empty room about teaching. She was more than happy as it was extra cash for her and the TKers started shopping in the store too.

I took over the TK class at the gym i worked out at before my cert. The previous instructor quit. LOVE it. You could teach at schools or community ed classes or church halls or even get a class going with your work collegues. Most smaller women's only type gyms dont need a primary certification like AFAA. If you decide to teach at gym, they will probably hire you on the condition you get your primary cert within 60-90 days.

Go for the cert, it was a fantastic day. The presenters are wonderful. You won't regret it.

Good luck and if you have any questions about the cert just ask away.

Shannon,
I went to a certification in Sept. (Lead by Mindy!) It took about 3weeks to get the results back, but I passed and am now looking for a place where I can teach after my full time job as well. TKB is pretty popular at most 24hr fitness clubs, I just havn't found an opeing yet. It's also been a little harder for me because I'm completely new to TX and don't know where any community centers are. emoticon Anyways, do the cert, you'll have a great time even if you don't know where you are going to teach yet.

I am an attorney and entrepreneur, and have no fitness experience or certs. Got certified for TK at Camp in August. Checked with the local community center about giving classes there (and I told them I have never taught TK boxing before, but just became certified thought I could do a good job at it) and they were all over it - want me to start with the next season. Community centers (especially for smaller cities, where they may not have many instructors) are a great way to get started and build experience.

If you are new to an area, try Googling "community center ..." or "rec center in " for your state or nearby big cities, etc. You should be able to locate them. Also, the phone book may list them under Parks & Rec., as they are usually run by that department of city/county government.

Thanks for all the quick responses! It's great to know there will be a way for me to do this given my constraints.

I'm sure as certification approaches I will have tons of questions I will bring back here. Thanks again!

Hi Shannon,

I completely agree with everything that's been written here. I got my certification in Chicago a little over a month ago. I haven't even started looking for a job yet. I wanted to know a round backwards and forwards before I looked. I think I'm ready now!

I wanted to mention that I first bought the home study course before attending the live training. It came really quickly, something like 3 days after I ordered it. If you buy the home study course, you can attend the live training free. (The cost of home study is the same as attending a live session.) It was kind of nice to have the Turbo Kick manual to review ahead of time. Also included was the "Going for Gold" DVD which reviews the correct way to do all the punches and kicks. It's something to think about if you haven't already registered!

Best of luck!
Betty

Here's my 2 cents emoticon
Ok- I started at the weight of 305- I am now down to 185 but when I did my cert I was 220- last February.
So- my point here is- I never in a million years would have imagined that I would be a fitness instructor- but I am- my first class I did as a fundraiser back in july and had 30 friends- now last week I started my weekly class at a rented studio and had 17 people there and it's the best. I am still "fat" but it goes to show that ANYONE can teach- plus it's really awesome being part of this community of instructors-
DO IT!

TurboMer,

What a great story. Good for you! emoticon

I remember during my day of certification our presenter stressed you don't have to have a perfect body to be an instructor. Enthusiasm and encouragement go a long way. I'm sure you are an inspiration to your students.

Keep up the great work!

I have to agree with Mer! When I took my cert in Oct. 2006, I was 198 lbs and thought I had no business being there. Now, a year later, I'm down to 150 lbs and teaching several classes a week and adding more at the community college in the Spring. Not only that but now I'm getting my personal trainer certification and teaching "basic" nutrition and fitness to our community!!!

All of this, sparked by Turbo Jam, from a girl who could never lose weight before. It's amazing how it will change your life!!! You can do it and people LOVE it! I just had a man who came to class for the first time last week say he's NEVER felt so good as he did after his first class. THAT is exactly why we teach!!! emoticon

Good luck!

Thanks - that's awesome- who certified you? Did you see Chalene at Fitness Fusion last April? I was there and met a few of the APD's emoticon
TINA
That's so aweome- you're doing so great!

At my first class in July- I had also people coming up to me saying how they NEVER had so much fun exercising in their life- and that's how it's supposed to be- it's not supposed to be about the perfect body!

TurboMer,

Kristina Sullins certified me. I'm pretty sure she was at the Fitness Fusion in April. It seems like I remember seeing pictures if it on Kristina's website. I wasn't able to go, I'd just had surgery a few days before. However, I am hoping to get to it this April! Do you think you'll be going?

Hi ladies,
How do you find out about the live sessions? I am new to turbo Jam, and actually have yet to receive the materials. The community message board is inspiring and motivating, and I can't wait to begin.

Hi,

Do you want to attend a live Turbo Kick class as a student or become an instructor? If you want to attend a class, check with your local park/community center. Or you could call gyms in your area and find out if they have classes. I'm in the Chicago suburbs and that's where I find Turbo Kick classes.

If you want to become an instructor, you can go to the Turbo Kick website. (The address is obvious emoticon I'm afraid if I include it here it will be taken down.) Within that site you'll see an area in the left hand column that says something like "Turbo Kick Training".

Good luck!!

Congrats on the new job!

And thanks to everyone else for contributing. You all are very motivating. I am excited to finally have the opportunity to do the training!

I guess the answer is to come up with places to teach aside from the big gyms. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Everyone,

Kathryn, congrats on your new gig!! I'm so happy for you. emoticon I think I would rather teach at a place that's never had TK before.

Do you have Chalene's "Rock the House" booklet? She tells about a TK instructor in Dalls who has a "Frequent Kicker" club. Students get a happy face stamp on a card for each class they attend (5 stamps for bringing a guest). Those who get 25 stamps in 90 days get a free t-shirt. She says it not only brings students to her class, but it brings folks into the club, which makes the owners very happy.

By the way, it's really cool that Mindy certified you!

Enjoy teaching and check back every now and then to let us know how it's going.

Hi Everyone,

Kathryn, by the time you read this you'll probably be finished with your first class. I hope it went really well for you!

I love Tosca's book "The Eat Clean Diet"! It completely changed my attitude towards food and got me down to what I weighed in college. Maybe I can get the cookbook for Christmas.

Yes, be sure to let us know how it went!
