I have recently started back with the Power 90 tapes, however, I cannot do the squats or lunges because of my knees (chondromalacia). What does the Fitness Advisor or Tony recommend for replacement of these exercises? I cannot do any closed chain exerices that involve my knees - - please recommend something else so I can continue with some progress.
Thanks!

How bad are your knees? What has your doctor recommended? You should have some knee stabilizer protocol for you condition that you can use. If not, I would see a sports physical therapist so they can recommend a course of action. The standard was to go is with leg curls and extensions but it's possible that these aren't appropriate for you at this time.

My knees are okay but I cannot walk upstairs without my knees popping which leads to further damage -- same issue with squats/lunges.
Basically my doctor (knee doctor) recommended to stop doing closed chain exercises and bicycle for 30-45 minutes/day. Also I do knee stabilizer (ankle weights) exercises.

I plan on still incorporating the bicylce with P90 as I believe it is more of therapy for my knee and does not lend the same results as P90 does.

I have done this for the last 6 months or so and my knee is better but it will not be the same until I probably have knee surgery at some point.

I am fine with any workout except when it comes to closed chain - I can't do any squats or lunges and minimize any jogging or jumping jacks (I modify these by marching but still doing the arm movements).

So - instead of squats/lunches -- do leg extensions and leg curls?
Leg extensions are one of my exercises he has me doing (with ankle weights as I sit on a chair) - so that is not a problem How would I do leg curls without a weight machine?

Sounds like you're doing the right things already. You can do leg curls by laying on your stomach, ideally with your leg off a bench but the floor can work okay. You can't push too hard on these things yet but that's okay, you can get a lot of leg strength on the bike.

Just walk in place or fast forward through the sections you can't do. That's okay, you're bike sub is good. You are correct in that it's different and a good idea to keep trying to do the differnt moves in Sweat.

You doc sounds great. I'm happy because I've seen so much bad doctor protocol here that I start sounding anti-doctor. I'm not at all, just skeptical about them. Good doctors are sooo important. You're lucky you found one!

Thanks FA! I feel more comfortable moving forward with P90 -- as you can see I am cautious but with these modifications I can progress without any further knee issue!

I have been doing Slim in 6 for 2 weeks now. When doing lunges my knees crack, alot. They don't hurt, but the noise is driving me crazy. Could I be doing permanent damage?

Thanks for your response. Martha

I am somewhat disappointed with these message boards. I have posted at least 6 post and have only gotton 1 response from a nice lady that took the time to respond. My last post was regarding knee pain and I am still waiting for some advise. What have I done wrong?

Hi Martha, I was just looking through the message board and I saw this one on bad knees and I read your comment about you being dissapointed about the message boards. At first I didn't notice when the first messages where posted, but if you look you will see it was clear back in 2002, so they are quite old. The people who posted it and the replies are probably not even around anymore.

I am going to try and start my second go around a P90 on March 22nd. I started last year and had to stop after three weeks because I reinjured one of my knees. I have had around 7 operations on my left knee and four on my right. Pretty bad when you have had so many surgerys you loose count.

Anyways, you should take the popping of your knees seriously. It could be nothing at all or it could be something more to worry about. If I where you I would find I could orthopedic surgeon and have them looked at. From past experience it could be cartledge or something more serious. Your doctor will be able to best determine what you should do.

I know for around the past month my knees have started to pop when I walk upstairs to my apartment. I am scared to death to go and see my doctor but I need to. I will be starting my own thread when I start P90 again and I would be happy if you would join or just let me know how your knees and you are doing. You can email me at battlingbard@comcast.net.

Hope this helps and I will also check back at this message thread.

Stacie
