Hi Everyone!
This week we milk Tony’s 50th birthday one last time. In case you missed them, there were two articles on this event, both written by me. The first was about Tony’s involvement with Beachbody and the second was an interview, which I thought was pretty inspiring. And my P90X blog is still going as well. Here are the links:
http://www.beachbody.com/product/newsletters/313.dohttp://www.beachbody.com/product/newsletters/314.do#article2http://steve-edwards.blogspot.com/Though it clear states that questions are for “Steve’s Mailbag”, most of this week’s questions were directed at Tony. But this is my mailbag, so I’m answering for him. Tony does read this. If I say anything he doesn’t agree with I’m sure he’ll tell me.
===================================
Dear Tony,
I have been doing P90X for the past eight weeks. I have lost 12 pounds and 2% body fat. This past weekend I bruised my shoulder riding my bicycle. How long should I wait after being released by the doctor to begin working out again and where should I pick up my workouts? Thank you in advance for you time and answer.
Drew

In many respects it’s a doctor’s question. Injuries vary so, hopefully, your doc will have a recommendation. From a physical therapy perspective, you’ll want to begin training on the shoulder right away and let pain by your guide. Essentially, if it hurts doing a movement then don’t do that movement. It does you no good to break down muscle that is already broken down.
You don’t need to stop training anything that doesn’t work your shoulder. But if you did take some time off of X don’t jump back in full force or you may end up doing too much breakdown that you’ll reverse your progress. Instead, take day one really slow (like maybe the warm-up and cool-down and one round of exercises of an X workout). If you aren’t sore add a bit more day two, giving yourself up to a week to get back to where you were.

Happy 50th Tony
hope i look like you when i turn 50,...actually hope i look like you soon lol, well that’s my goal anyways. me and a bunch of my friends we're wondering if you had thought about making a workout program for people who want a beachbody and then some--beachbody with a little more muscles, maybe with some weight lifting exercises for the pecs to get that big square gladiator chest women love so much.
anyway thx for your time...P90X ROCKS!!!!
love you guys
big fan,
Stephen

We’re always thinking about what’s next but it’s unlikely that more bulk will be on the Beachbody agenda. Maybe something more intense, like something more cross fit-ish or fight training oriented, but probably not training for bodybuilder-type mass. The main reason for this is logistics. In order to add much more mass than you can with P90X, you need to push some hefty weight around. And shipping weight just doesn’t make economic sense. Plus, there are plenty of “beef” type gyms almost everywhere.

Where is the workouts for woman like me - I am fifty in menopause and am trying to get back in shape - I have been told by my doctor I need to lose 30 lbs - I have tried so many workout tapes but find I can not keep up with them. It is very disheartening and not very motivating to try to keep up with 20 and 30 year olds. When will someone gear a workout video for us??????
Thanks
Ann
==================================
I guess this isn’t a Tony question. He made Tony and the Folks. This workout is designed for older people but, actually, might be a place for you to start. Age isn’t really the issue here at all. You can start now and still get into the best shape of your life. 50 is not old. Just read the responses below!
But you’ll want to start slow. We actually have a lot of workouts you could begin with. Kathy Smith’s Project You would probably be perfect. So would a gym like Curves. What is most important for you, right now, is to start something. It doesn’t really matter that much what it is, just as long as you do it. If you do your fitness will improve. Before long you’ll be perfectly able to do Power 90. Who knows? Maybe you’ll surprise yourself. P90X could still be on your horizon.

Is there another way to get Omega-3 in your diet, besides eating fish/seafood?
Since I can't eat fish/seafood, I'm not too crazy about taking fish oil pills.
Aaron
================================
Since fish oil is made from fish you wouldn’t want to take it, for sure. Of course there are options. Some of the best sources are nuts and seeds. If you eat a variety you should be covered. Hempseeds and flaxseeds are a particularly good source of omega 3. So are avocados and olives.

I am having trouble finding the right words to describe how I feel about your article on sugar. Shocked would be putting it lightly. Disappointed that a company I had so much faith in has commented so casually on Animal Testing. I can only hope that you are completely unaware of the fact that testing on any primate or any species of animal is counterproductive to science, and the careless attitude you've shown to this issues is deeply disturbing. The facts are in and animal studies often impede medical progress. Do you expect me to believe that putting a Monkey in a non friendly and unnatural environment, then feeding the Monkey sugar which they don't naturally eat, then think that the results are significant. No, impossible. I listen to my own body and mind. Nothing good comes from what is being done to these helpless animals, and again the fact that you could write about it as if you were just brushing your teeth is heartbreaking to say the least.
If you need to see what is really going on and how attitudes like this are contributing to the senseless torture and killing of thousands of animals each and every day, go to StopAnimalTests.com.
I want a response from BeachBody . I am a coach and before I go back out and ask friends to join I need to know where you stand on this issue.
I will not be a part of animal suffering.
Thank You,
Vicki Overton

Since Tony is a vegetarian this seemed like a good place to answer this. Beachbody does not do animal testing nor are we associated with any company that does. We do, however, use science to back up our products and almost all nutritional products are tested on animals as well as humans. It is not our place to throw out science done on animals (again, we don’t conduct the science). But both FTC and FDA regulations require us to use science to validate efficacy. Without scientific data, we can’t make claims about our products.
Personally, I share your concerns. I find human treatment of animals in many instances to be abysmal. I’m the type of person who puts spiders outside and weaves around ants on my bike. The last person I physically threatened (years ago) was abusing a dog. It’s something I won’t stand for. I could even tell you that I broke into a lab and released animals back in college but, on the record, I don’t recall this action. This, however, is not my job. I’m paid to use my knowledge, experience, and scientific data to create products and educate Beachbody consumers to the best of my ability. Dismissing research based on a personal agenda would be a breach of my contract.
PS – I could not find the article you were referring to and I checked back a couple of years. If you find it would you mail it to me? I’m curious about what I said. Sorry it offended you.
==================================
So it’s been five years since I first ordered the Beach body video and supplements (back when you could get the supplements over the border). I’ve had several false starts where I only lasted a few weeks and then fell off the wagon so to speak. Last month I turned forty and it was Tony’s “birthday” interview that inspired me to write for the first time. This past winter I dusted off the video having never gotten further than 5 weeks without getting distracted and away from the routine (and that was in 2005). I started again in February but a busy work schedule with some traveling and a bout with the flu knocked me off again but now I am only two weeks from finishing the complete 90 day program. I guess my message and comments are this; at 40 it’s never too late and if at first you don’t succeed just keep on trying.
Post script; with only two weeks to go I have these questions. I have new muscles and definition I have I have never had before I my entire life, what is the next step (besides the obvious like keep going or join a gym)? Is there a P90 program designed to take me from this level up to another one.
Best regards and thanks for everything.
Mark Strang
P.S. One of the best parts was that during it all, I kept receiving the newsletter. Whether I was working out regularly or not I always felt I had membership in something. Thanks again.
==================================
Congrats on your progress and welcome to the club! We’ve got plenty for your to do list. P90 Master Series, Power Half Hour, Ten Minute Trainer, P90X, and P90X Plus. And if you ever get bored of Tony, we’ve got plenty of other trainers to choose from. Then, when you’ve really done all of our programs, we’ve to the mix and match board where people share their hybrid or sports specific workouts.

Beachbody-
WOW!! Tony, Carl and Jon- thank you. Thank you for
believing that there are people out there who want to
work hard, who understand that pills, stupid gadgets
and shakes are jokes, who can put in the time and
energy and really, truly make changes to their lives,
minds and bodies.
My husband and I workout each day, together with Tony
and P90X- not only has it made us stronger and fitter
but the quality time we spend together is fantastic.
A sincere Happy Birthday to Tony- you are an
inspiration to me and I wish you the best.

Tony,
Just wanted to wish you a happy 50th bithday. Thanks to you, I have a body at age 56 (a six pack with extras) and when recently visiting my family, which included my 44 year old nephew, who was always long and lean, and now is drooling regarding my achievements (body) and asking for advice...a first!!!
You have given me a purpose and guidance when I approach "working out." This too, has given me...confidence!
Thanks so much (Muchisimas gracias por todo),
José Burrello
Thanks, Beachbody, Tony and Carl for the excellent program.
I have been on the P90X program for about 5 weeks and I love it. My back has never been better-thanks to posture and core body strength. I love the Superman move. I have lost 7 pounds-and more importantly-my stress has gone down. I am 49 years old and I thought my running days were over. Last year I tore my plantar fascia and with P90X and continuing my running I finished a 5K Fourth of July race in just over 24 minutes. No bad for a guy that thought his running days were over -just 4 months ago. I am recommending the program to all of my clients and to all of my Veterinary associates.
Thanks again.

Dear Tony,
I am 50 now, soon to be 51. I am now into my third round of P90X; started this time last summer just before I turned 50. I am a surgeon, and have kept myself relatively fit all my life, but starting first with regular Beachbody stuff a few years ago, and then P90X last year has changed my life.
Great product. Thanks Tony and crew.
Brad Case.

Just throwing a bit more love out Tony’s way. We’ll close with one more. Somehow I don’t see Tony signing up for Bingo night. See you next week!
Steve

Happy birthday to Tony Horton. But tell Steve Edwards that, at age
50, Tony now qualifies for AAPR membership.
