Hi Everyone,
With all the product launches this month we haven’t had the usual number of techie questions that we normally get. Next month we’ll be back on to trendy issues. We’ve still got some interesting topics to discuss this week, including the juice/fruit issue, adding additional exercise, and good ‘ol motivation.
I also forgot the link to my blog in the last bag. Not much updating has happened since then but I’ll be transitioning for a travel blog back to health and fitness shortly (not that my travel scribes weren’t about H & F). Enjoy.

Hello,
I am 54 and have been overweight most of my life. I have tried all kinds of diets in my life and I did do Turbo Jam for a while and really toned up but didn't lose any pounds. I don't eat for hunger, I eat for other reasons, stress, bored, I should... whatever, how do I change that? I am fully aware of what a healthy diet is, and I've been successful at times, but not forever. What do I need to do to change my mental outlook?

The are two issues to discuss in relation to this question. First off, weight loss isn’t always the best indication of how your fitness is progressing. Remember that muscle, by volume, weighs more than fat so as you add muscle you will shrink at the same weight. We’ve had female success stories who have GAINED weight in the right places and looked much better. This is why we recommend that you use measurements, not weight, as your progress indicator.
On the eating thing, nothing is more important than motivation. Fortunately, we have one of the best motivational tools possible: our Message Boards. Give em a peek and look for a group who has the same problems that you do. I’m pretty sure you’ll find one. Then you can all take turns motivating each other.

I’m 50 pounds overweight purchased turbo jam and just found out I’m 3 months pregnant, I usually gain 60-75 pounds with my pregnancies I’m so traumatized by this pregnancy because of my weight. Is there anything I can do? Please help me so I’m not discouraged my entire pregnancy.

That’s too much weight to gain during your pregnancy. Times have changed and we now know so much more about healthy weight gain during pregnancies. Again, the boards are where you’ll find your questions answered and the support you need. Congratulations and good luck!

Very fun article. Good wit, good humor, good- for- you recipe.
Thanks! (I always thought salsa would be harder to make than that. I
actually think I could do that.) And during the hour that I'm waiting
for the salsa to set its flavors I can be doing a Beachbody video,
right? Maybe Slim 'N 6-Pack followed by Slim 'N Limber. A few more
calories burned without over-doing it, because the abs would be
different muscles than what were used walking or biking to the store,
and the next one would stretch it all out! Thanks for making me smile
as I read your article. :-)

This is a good “perspective” email and may help the two readers above. We tend to waste a lot of time in our lives because we don’t think outside the box. This salsa recipe is a good example. Debbie’s advice, to change the “I don’t have an hour to sit around and wait” into “now I have an hour to workout” is the exact type of thinking that fuels the transformations of our success stories.

To whom it may concern,
Is it ok to do regular lifts during this week in addition to the regularly scheduled workouts. Such as squats, bench, incline and cleans or do you recommend following the program to the letter?

There is no benefit to adding resistance work to one of our programs unless it’s with a lot of foresight and specifically done for a reason. Our programs, done correctly, stress you body as much as possible between various workouts. At least in the anaerobic realm (not necessarily aerobically). So adding weight work will just cause more breakdown so that you don’t recover and well and, hence, your strength gains will suffer. Since all training should be in blocks, my advice would be to do the program, as is, for one cycle and then do a cycle where you focus on traditional lifting.

What about drinking orange juice in place of diet soda? It is fairly high in calories, but I know it is better for me. Should I worry about the calories when I’m drinking natural juices?
Thanks,
Mark
=================================
Yes, you do need to worry about juice calories. While better than soda, certainly, most juices are high in both calories and sugar and some are processed to the point where there is very little difference between them and soda. Juice, while made from fruit, loses one of the fruits healthiest ingredients, fiber. So you are always better choosing whole fruit over juice when it comes to your health.
Here are a couple of articles on the subject:

Hello,
I'm trying to locate the article that is referenced in 9 foods not to give kids. . . under number 4 it talks about juice and then mentions briefly about soda and lists an article to find at the bottom of the page. Well, I can't seem to find the link. I went to Steve's website and clicked on the article, but every article I click on takes me to the same advertisement page. I just really want to be able to read what he's written and I can't seem to find the articles. Can you help me? thanks!

Sorry about this. We’ve updated our server and still are not caught up with our old links. Here are those links again.

Hi there! I love all of the little articles that have so much information in them that you publish. I have a question about protein. I don't like fish or beans. Since I have started working out I am realizing how weak I am. I don't have a lot of energy in the day. What are some other things I can eat to get more protein in my diet?
Thanks,
Liz McBride
=====================================
You have many choices for protein beyond beans and fish. Any lean meat is high in protein and low in fat. All legumes, like soy and lentils, not just beans, are high in protein too. Dairy products are high in protein too, you’ll just want to be careful about the fat content, which is pretty easy given its always written on the label. Nuts have a lot of protein (but also calories and fat, though healthy fat), and even veggies have some protein.
We’ll wrap it up today with a letter from Lori, who once again stresses the importance of eating fruit as opposed to fruit juice.

Hello Beach Body,
I love the information in your newsletters. Thank you for presenting the facts in a clear and precise manner. I know I should not make certain food choices but without the detailed reasons, it is easier to go ahead and indulge sometimes. Now that I know all the reasons and better understand why some foods are not healthy for me, it is easier to rethink what I am putting in my mouth and weigh the short-term benefits (immediate gratification) versus the long-term healthy benefits.
Thanks for mentioning that whole fruit is a much better choice than drinking fruit juice. During one of my visits to my doctor, I proudly announced that I drank a glass of orange juice every day, thinking this would illustrate how well I monitored my intake. He then explained how eating an orange instead of drinking OJ was a much healthy alternative (for all the same reasons you outlined). I now have made the switch and feel smarter about this decision because I better understand the facts.
Thanks again for the newsletter. I read everyone you send me. Chalene got me hooked and your supportive communications keep me focused.
Regards,
Lori De Giusti
