I, like many others, did Insanity, and at first was not happy with my progress. I searched high and low on these threads, and other sites about Insanity results, since after the first month, I did not see much change in weight.

A little background. I started P90X this past January at 272. I ate 1900 cal a day and lost a little over 40 lbs after 90 days. The week after I lost maybe another 3 lbs. I started Insanity in April at 228. At the end of the first month I saw my clothes were a bit looser and my measurements was down, but for as crazy as Insanity was, did not see as much weight drop as I thought I would. I brought it every day (had a heart rate monitor, I was burning calories like crazy!)

My problem was my nutrition. When I first started Insanity, I tried to stick to 1900 calories because it worked before. NOT THIS TIME. I ran out of energy fast. I researched this and raised my calories to 2400, still plateauing. I had to raise my calories to about 2900 and then started to see results. I was scared of this, obviously being overweight I was told eating lots o'food = bad. I probably could have raised the calories a few hundred more and been fine, I never gained weight at 2900 cals. My other problem was I wasn't eating enough veggies. Maybe a serving or 2 a day. I needed to eat more.

I did use Shakeology, I ate a serving of fruit a day, protein powder, quest protein bars (1 a day), usually a peanut butter sandwich a day, chicken, turkey, something else high protein. I had Shakeology every morning as well (you do not NEED this, but it helps, and I think it is delicious).

In the end (yes, as they say, month 2 is where the magic happens) I lost 15 lbs (down to 213), lost 6% body fat, and lost almost 15 inches total around my body. My core is tighter than ever before. I was still hoping for a little more weight loss, but I'll take it.

I almost quit month 1 because I didn't see much results and almost went back to P90X. My wife and friends told me to do the same. I did what I wanted to do, finished Insanity, earned my shirt, and am REALLY GLAD I finished it.

In a few weeks I am actually going to do a P90X/Insanity hybrid, to get the best of both worlds, to lose a little more fat.

But I know how frustrating Insanity weight loss can be, my 2 suggestions is follow the calorie needs per the included nutrition guide, and eat lots of veggies.

Hope this information helps someone based on my past experiences.

Thanks for sharing. I am in the middle of week 2 and was concerned. I can feel myself getting more toned, but I haven't seen the same results on the scale. Some say this is due to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). I play to stick with it. Thank you for posting.

Glad it helped! Do what every one says and ignore the scale, for me it was difficult to do, I am pretty obsessed with it haha. If you can hide it, do that. Just stick with it and finish it.

This is exactly what I needed to read today! While I'm only on day 10 of Insanity- I was just expecting to see the results NOW! I feel awesome- I'm pushing through the workouts- but I, like you were, am scared to get too many calories in.. I've always thought less is better! I'm thinking this may be my hang-up.. My body needs more fuel.. I am determined to stick with it- but would really love to lose 10 lbs or so.. thanks again for sharing your story!!

I was the same way, I wanted results yesterday. It takes time. Hopefully you took some measurements and pictures. Those will give you the full view. I would def try to recalculate your calories and subtract the 500 (or I've heard multiply it by .20 (20%) is another good alternative, depends who you talk to I guess. Just have to go by trial and error...that was pretty much my 60 days haha

I think my first month I went down 5 lbs or so, and the other 10 in the 2nd month. But the 2nd month is when I really started to increase my calories. When I realized I was eating more and still not gaining, I felt better about it. My calories actually should have been a little higher, so I might have halted even better results for myself...

Thanks so much!! How many vegetables would you say you ate daily? Did you go up at all in the beginning? You're my motivation!

(I'm on day 3, what can I do to get a shirt By the way )

Thanks!

This gives me hope! I lost about 3 pounds in the first 5 weeks and was starting to get frustrated. It's easy to see why month 2 is "magic"- today was my 3rd day of it and I'm WHOOPED! I haven't calculated or counted calories, but I try to watch what I eat and have an idea of my calories. I've actually been wondering if I'm not eating enough because while I'm not starving, I'm sometimes afraid to eat because I feel like I'll eat too much. Like you, being an overweight person, it's beat into your head to eat less to lose weight, right? I've been trying to eat more lately (good stuff like fruit, veggies, protein shake, etc.) so hopefully this helps. Thanks for the post!

What timely post! I'm about to finish week 2 of month 2. During the first month, I kept my calories to 1,900. I started Insanity at 252 and made it down to 241 at the end of the month. I was pleased until I hit a plateau. I have not been able to drop anymore weight or reduce my waist (which had gone down 4 inches in month 1). The only explanation I could come up with was too few calories...especially since I had started feeling exhausted and tired.

I've upped my calories to 2,100, but no real changes. At the end of each workout, I'm dripping with sweat, so I know I'm working hard. My thought on my calorie count has gone like this:

BMR - 2,100
Daily activity - 420 (I have a desk job, so I use 0.2 as a factor)
Calories burned in workout - 600/700 (this is a guessimate)
Total calories burned in day - 3,100-3,200

I want to lose 2 pounds per week, so that a reduction of 1,000 calories per day. Leaving me with 2,100.

I eat plent of fruits and veggies, drink enough water, and have my nutrient ratio at 45/30/25 (carbs/protein/fats).

I'm beginning to think 2,100 is still too few, but like you I'm concerned about too many calories. If I go with the "very active" factor of 0.7, then I'm coming up about 500/calories per day short and need to boost my intake to 2,600.

So, any thoughts or advice...anyone? (Thanks in advance!)

just to throw this out there.. my goal is to MAINTAIN or even gain a little, not lose weight, replacing muscle with fat.

I am 5'11, 45 yrs old, 170 lbs, and i am eating 3000 calories a day 40/40/20 (basically eating the P90x diet phase 2 level 3). day 1 of insanity, 170 lbs. day 40something of insanity, 170 lbs... but with much more definition and muscle.

according to my hr watch i am burning 7-900 calories per workout on average although on one crazy day i burned 1030. your mileage may vary.

Glad it helped! When doing Insanity I was lucky if I got a serving or 2 (I still ate good, just not as many veggies). This past week (not doing any workouts) I have had 4 or 5 a day. One of Tony Horton's tips was to eat a salad a day, so I try to do that. The more you can eat, the better it will benefit you. My problem is I am picky when it comes to veggies, and only like certain ones, though I am warming up to more of them now. I don't believe I really went up, maybe .4 here and there, but overall I either stayed the same or would drop a little. I have heard a lot of people gaining the first few weeks, then dropping after. Likely muscle build up.

For the shirt (mine should be coming in next week) make sure you took a before picture and measurements. Here is the link to the form, it will tell you what you need to submit at the end:

Glad it gives you hope! First months seems to be more of a prep haha, but I have heard of people loosing a good amount of weight that first month. There are some workouts in month 2 I was burning just under 900 calories! Crazy! I would recommend using a calorie counter program like MyFitnessPal. I use it religiously every day. Keeps you on track.

I understand where you are coming from about over eating. If your stomach starts to rumble, I'd feed it (I call it the beginning of starvation mode). Eat a piece of fruit or a vegetable or protein shake (I drink a number of these a day, and one a few hours before bed...I have never gained weight doing that).

Good luck, keep me updated!

Always good to hear from people around the same size as you! I think it is still too low. Usually when you are really plateauing, upping calories (or cal cycling, diff amounts each day, but adds up to the same number at the end of the week) is probably needed. Like I said when I was down to 222 lbs or so, I had to go up to almost 2900 before it started coming off again. I work a desk job too (I work in IT - some days I move a little more, but I sit a lot) so I am pretty much the same scenario. Try raising it to at least 2500 for a week and see what happens.

Also, maybe try the ratio Insanity uses 40 protein/40 carbs/20 fat. You need carbs, but too many (especially like bread, cereal, etc can not be as helpful). I wouldn't use the .7 factor, I'd use 1.55 if anything for now, but try raising to 2500 see if that helps, you still might need to raise it though.

Good luck, keep me updated!

Thanks for the post! I saw a picture of someone that gained a pound or two but looked totally different, more toned after 60 days, crazy how big of a difference there was but maybe a 1 lb weight difference (12 lbs fat loss, 13 lbs muscle gained or something like that)

I think it is awesome that you posted this thank you!!! I also did Insanity after doing P90X. Towards the end the fat really did start melting off like hot candle wax but at first it wasn't like I thought it was going to be BUT I was losing inches emoticon For everyone out there frustrated, trust the program and you will get the results! On days when you are discouraged and want to give up take all that anger and frustration out on the workout!!! emoticon

Thanks for posting this! My sister in law was frustrated with her first month results(she just finished month one) but i'll make sure to let her know about this post! I'm on about day 11 of Insanity and haven't seen the scale move much either, but I've noticed more stamina during the workouts! This post has proven very helpful, so again thanks!
