Looking for a homemade recovery drink recipe for during the workout
Hi All,

I'm currently starting my second month of Insanity. Does anyone have a recipe for a homemade recovery drink like R&R that you can drink during the workouts? My post-workout is a scoop of protein powder in skim milk, which I think would be a terrible idea during a workout. emoticon

Thanks!
Lisa

There actually isn't anything you can make when you're at home for drinking during your workout. You would be need to go to bodybuilding.com to get yourself an intra workout powder, which is mostly bcaa like aminoenergy or some other product. Most of these are pretty cheap and are great especially when they have high amounts of bcaas.

Really?...come on man (Justin). Its easy.

Lisa...The "easiest" is fat free chocolate milk. I wouldnt necessarily recommend that though. I use 10oz. fat free milk and 3/4 of a scoop of creatine mix (the kind that has flavor and sugar) It comes out EXACTLY to the "magic" 40/10 split. It's probably the closest to the R&R drink that I've seen. It sounds gross but actually tastes pretty good. I have the fruit punch flavor from Walmart, $15. I was trying to do the same as you and found that it made the "magic" numbers. I got prepared to choke it down and found...hey!, it tastes pretty good!

EDIT: I just reread your post...Do you want "R&R" for DURING the workout? Just curious. I, personally cant drink anything except water during workouts....good luck.

Hey Chris,

I'm looking for both, but definitely a during the workout drink. I've been doing fine with just water, but I was curious if something else would give me more energy. Does the creatine blend create muscle mass? I'm definitely trying to avoid that as a woman. Lol

Creatine would increase mass if you lifted weights. You might gain a tiny bit doing Insanity but it would probably be negligible. I wouldnt worry about it. emoticon

If you are concered about creatine, and drinking milk during your workout isnt your thing, I'd just drink plain ol' Gatorade... Thats what it was invented for. Then drink your regular protein shake afterward.

If you want to throw up during your workout while drinking milk be my guest. Drinking a creatine drink will not do anything. Your body uses insulin to drive in creatine to muscles. And even if creatine was in the blood, there would still be no use to it during the workout. It does it's work in the muscle itself.

And creatine monohydrate does not add mass. It helps with energy stores and being able to push for the last little bit of exercise you can do.

A bcaa drink works perfectly during exercise because bcaas are absorbed right through the lining of your stomache and keeps your amino acid levels up in your blood.

Heres a good product designed just for what you want. http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/sv/xtend.html

And your body will not exceed the amount of muscle needed for Insanity unless you were to add more resistance like weight. So don't worry about adding muscle.

You definitely want to keep your recovery drink to post workout. During exercise your body generates growth hormone. Recovery drink (although VERY beneficial) generates insulin. Insulin hormone clears out and blocks growth hormones, that's why it's best saved until after your workout. You can even wait 30 minutes or so if you want before drinking your recovery drink.

But as far as a homemade recipe, you can definitely make it your own. Try natural fruit juice mixed with some whey protein powder. Or if the budget is tight try and find Accelerade at your local vitamin shoppe. (not as good as R&R from BB though!)
