My Insane Journey - Phase 2
6/10/13 2:23 AM
Hello all! I wanted to start a thread to serve as my Journal of sorts instead of using a blog. I am horrible with updating those (even though I have my own..I don't update often). >_< I joined BeachBody a long time ago, but never really did much of anything.

My name is Sara, and I have a very typical story for my weight history. I have a thyroid autoimmune condition that needless to say - has jacked me up something horrible. But... I'm taking my body back!!!

In a nut shell: since high school (about 10 years ago) I have gained and lost weight without changing lifestyle. My highest weight being at 242 in January of 2012. I did complete (barely) a round of Insanity last summer and lost about 20 lbs. Unfortunately, my thyroid issue had other plans for me and I couldn't keep up with my new lifestyle. The pounds piled back on, and I crawled back in a hole.

I am now (as of 5/14/13) in phase 2 of Insanity again and am doing amazing! I've gone gluten and casein free since March 10th of this year. I am also using the BodyMedia Fit LINK armband to help me keep track of how many calories I burn so I know how much to eat which has been a HUGE help to me. I've even been able to lower my thyroid hormone dose due to my weight loss thus far which has made me (and my Dr) very happy.

I will be adding photos once I get my laptop at home to work...but my progress for my current round start on page 6 I believe if you'd like to skip ahead and read about it emoticon. I am planning to do LesMills Combat after this round of Insanity and then possibly Asylum.

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!!

PS - I will not be doing another round of Insanity for at least a few months now. As of finishing 6/8/13, I've had my fill of it between this round and the round I did last summer (and gained everything back from). Between this post, and the one a few below, it tells you about the majority of my journey up until this point. I'm thankful for the support I've gotten from a few people here!!! I'll be doing LMC as of 6/9/13. If anyone wants to keep in touch friend me or follow on Instagram, I post often there. @scrimbring

Good luck to anyone just starting their journey!!!

I have this exact same post on page 7 when I updated today (6/7/13), but to make it easier for everyone to read instead of sifting through replies and such I'm putting it up here as well. emoticon

Well, I was debating whether or not to post this morning, but my excitement told me to. I reached ONEDERLAND this morning!!!! So I wanted to share the first half of my success story with you guys and maybe offer encouragement to anyone struggling.

Some back story (that’s how we start these things right?): I didn’t have weight problems in high school, but during my junior year (2000-01) I started feeling – off. I was very tired, run down, achey, acne exploding, migraines, puffy face, among other things. My Dr told my mom I was just a lazy teenager and Rx’d Coke and Hershey bars for my migraines. emoticon So I went about the rest of high school the best I could, pushing myself through running track and being a Cheerleader despite being tired. After I graduated (2002), I started feeling a bit better for a few months, and then within a year I ballooned up to almost 200 lbs. Before that year was over, I dropped the weight back down to my almost normal size.

Fast forward to 2006, I got a hypothyroid Dx. Started taking Synthroid, brought my thyroid levels to normal but I continued to feel like crap. I couldn’t even run anymore I was so tired. Fast forward again to 2009 when I got fed up and all but demanded a referral to an endocrinologist and I found out I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. My meds were doubled and I felt better for a few months but then declined again. In 2010 I found out I had autoimmune intolerance to gluten and casein – which explained my severe bloating and discomfort I had been “dealing” with for years, but I didn’t do anything about it of course. I was too lazy and hard-headed to change.

My weight really began to get out of control after 2010 when I started to have more severe hypo/hyper swings. I mean, they literally left me dazed and confused. I felt like Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde with a weight problem. I could go back and forth in a single day. I was an emotional wreck. My highest weight was at 242 and I felt like I hit a wall – something HAD to change. I hated myself. I hated what I had become, what my body did to me. Yes, my own body was sabotaging me and I was allowing it to happen. How did I become this person? So I decided I needed to be a better advocate for my own health because clearly Dr’s weren’t gonna do it for me! I had to put on my big girl panties and crawl out of my hole and fix myself.

I got off of synthetic T4 meds last August since they didn’t do a dang thing for me. I got on Armour Thyroid (Natural Dessicated Thryoid hormone that contains all the thyroid hormones, not just T4) and after 8 months on that I started to feel human again. I lost a few lbs which brought me to about 236 and this March I REALLY got serious again about getting healthy and losing weight, so I got back on MFP and started to use it for real since I had joined a long time ago. I drastically changed how I eat – NO gluten at all…ever because when I do eat it, it feels like I ate a bucket of razor blades and chased it with a bag of salt. I avoid dairy, but I do eat cheese once in awhile, or froyo. I try to avoid processed foods and eat as much fruits and veggies I can. I am finishing up Insanity this weekend, I’m training for a Tough Mudder in October that I plan to demolish!! Who knew I could run 5 miles without dying? I sure didn’t!!!! I don’t even recognize myself. I found my zeal for life again, that fire I used to have has been re-lit. I’m on the verge of tears as I write this and pour my heart out to your guys because my life has truly been transformed and I know there are others out there who are in the exact same place I was up until 3 months ago. I’m now down 42 lbs, and have just under 60 lbs or so to go! I’m not dead set on my goal weight of 140 (I’m 5’6”), I’m more or less after getting my body fat down to about 18-20% and yes…I want to be muscular. Ewww ….girl muscles!

To all of those people looking for help, for encouragement I have this to say to you: DO NOT give up on yourself. You need to dig down and make the decision for yourself to get better, to get healthy, to love yourself. Nobody is going to do it for you. You were given this one life, be strong enough to own it and do the best you can with the time you have on this earth. You never know – you might be silently inspiring someone with your strength to overcome the difficulty you have been dealt. You CAN do it!!!!!

PS – no tricks up my sleeve. I am not doing any “diet” program such as Paleo/Atkins/Intermittent Fasting/Weight Watchers/Jenny Craig/etc, no magic diet pills, no starvation (I eat 1600-2300+ cals a day depending on what I do for exercise that day), no calorie cycling or avoiding carbs, no liquid diets or “juice fasting”. I’m simply watching calories and exercising. I still eat pizza, ice cream, cookies...just not the versions I used to eat because I’d get sick lol. I don’t do crazy binge days once a week, I do however have one day every few weeks where I don’t pay as much attention to how much I eat – but it’s not a license to binge. I rarely go over my calories even on those days I allow myself to. The name of the game is moderation and making sure you have the calories available to eat those things.

End of Week 1 update:

Well, I know I'm on day 9 now, did my Pure cardio workout this morning - but I figured I'd update from my first week completion as of the 12th.

I finished all workouts which was my goal. Speed isn't really my focus this round, I just want to make it through the entire program without injury, and so far I'm doing just that :-). I did lose weight, and body fat though. *drum rollllllll*

Down 7.7 lbs and .7% BF !!!!!!

I have a feeling this week I won't lose as much weight or BF %, but my jeans are fitting better and I am feeling great just knowing that I'm getting the workouts done and not giving up on myself. :-D

End of Week 2 Update:

I love having my rest day on Sunday :-). I didn't think I'd lose much of anything this week since I had a huge loss for week one - but the scale loved me this morning!!! Down another 3.3 lbs for a total of 10.7 lbs gone, and another .5% BF.

I think I'll make my goal of getting under 200 lbs and then some for round one of Insanity :-D.

I will update Fit Test results above tomorrow after the Fit Test is completed for Day 15.

Thank you! :-) For motivation, personally - I get up an hour earlier than I need to before work during the week so I can knock out the workouts first thing since when I get home I like to chill and be lazy lol. It also gets easier once you get a schedule going for yourself. I am starting to look forward to the workouts now which makes it less of a chore and I don't mind getting up earlier. But - you first need to decide that you are making a lifestyle change. Motivation needs to come from somewhere deeper than just a fleeting desire. Once you make a commitement to yourself to get HEALTHY - not just to be skinny - motivation will be in more abundance! :-)

As for eating, I am not counting calories or carbs or fat grams, or eating on any type of schedule. Some eating palns have you counting all kinds of weird things, or telling you to eat every 2-3 hours. I keep it simple: I eat something when I'm hungry. I do eat about 5-6 times a day, some days I only eat 4 times. It really depends on what I eat. For example on days that I eat something with a lot of fat (GOOD fats) like a shakeology shake with added coconut oil, or some guacamole - I don't eat as much that day because I stay fuller a lot longer due to the satisfying fats. Like today I had a salad and some guacamole and tortilla chips, I stayed full for almost 5 hours so didn't need an afternoon snack had I not eaten that guac with lunch.

I also don't eat anything past 6-7 pm or so if I can help it at all because I usually fall asleep between 9-10 since we get up at 5 during the week. This not only helps my thyroid meds dissolve & absorb better, but I also don't have a full tummy when going to bed so it's less distress on my digestive tract when I'm winding down for sleep. Less junk to sit in your stomach overnight doing nothing but getting all rank and disgusting....eewwww

Today I had an internal war with myself to workout...not just a battle. I have been struggling with my thyroid disease since changing my meds up. But I was able to push through and workout :-). I have an appt next week to go back to the dr because waiting 3 months for a checkup is out of the question. I just hope she listens....

End of week 3 update:

I had a very hard week for week 3. I have been struggling with my thyroid disease. The biggest issue is my severe lack of energy and motivation. I really dont know how I pulled through and completed all of my workouts, but I did!! I was able to get 2.2 lbs off and shed .2% BF for the week which Im pleased about.

Its very weird: I gain during the week and then drop at the end. As an example: on I think Wednesday I weighed myself and I was up over 3 lbs to 215.5 or so. This morning I am 209.9. This happened last week as well I just dont recall how much I "gained" during the week.

Im ready for week 4 though. I just cant wait for Thursday to get here to get back to the doctor. >_<

Hello,

Looks like you are having great results already! Way to go! Great results already. Keep up on the good work!

Don't let the up/down thru the week get you. Our body fluctuates naturally from day to day, so try and rely on how you feel and weigh yourself less (and, yes, I'm a scale addict too, so I know its harder said than done!!!)

If you are feeling tired and out of energy, you may not be getting enough calories. With your thyroid issue I would consult with your doctor and let him know you are completing Insanity and show him the meal plan and discuss what your calories should be at.

I could help you calculate what they would be with the plan, but I would double check with your doctor as to not interfere with your thyroid!

Also, if you or anyone is looking for a thread to join for daily posting and motivation feel free to take a look at my thread! We post our daily workouts, support each other, help each other with questions, and just gives us accountability. It is on the Asylum board, but we have also completed Insanity, and I will be doing the Insanity program again in 2 weeks. We would love to have you join! The more the merrier and provides more support and accountability.

That makes more sense....gaining as the body is preparing to shed a lot. Thank you! :-) It doesn't drive me crazy, I just like seeing what's going on. My scale measures BF as well so that's what I mostly monitor.

As for the thyroid, I've been fighting with Dr.'s for 10 years now. I have Hashimoto's and it sucks. I'm going back this Thursday and demanding tests to see if I have an RT3 issue which I am suspecting since my FT4 has been normal even off meds, and my normal Dr. has yet to test my FT3 and RT3. emoticon.

Thank you for the encouragement!!!!

Hello Nicole, thanks for stopping by!! :-) I am getting enough calories, it's hard to describe the type of fatigue I feel. I can deff tell the difference between this type of tired/run down feeling and the type from not eating enough. I tend to get headaches when I need more food as well. I eat all day it seems LOL. :-)

My Dr. does know I'm doing Insanity, she asked what I was doing for exercise since my weight was down when I went in for a checkup 2 weeks ago. She said to keep it up, and she has a few other thyroid patients doing it as well as she likes it.

I'll check out your thread. My bf and I were talking about possibly doing 1 more round of Insanity after the Ultimate Reset before getting Asylum.

You will always find things to be harder at first, but once you find that motivation and the engage thing will work fine for you. If you feel that you cant do it just look around here and you will see a lot good results. I'm one of them that took the initiative to change my life and I have been blessed since I have the support from beachbody. Just keep doing your best and thing will be ok. Just Dig dipper.

I'm enjoying Asylum. First week was a little rough b/c I'm used to knowing the moves, so I had to focus on what he was doing/saying but now that I've got 2 weeks under my belt (and day 15 of 30 today!!!) I like it a lot better.

I think I'll start Rd 3 of Insanity when this is finished.

Glad your DR knows and is supportive of it!

Hey Brotte, thanks for the kind words :-). I have motivation, I scour these boards daily and read people's success stories and read about transformations and it has been keeping me going. Honestly, I would have given up weeks ago with how I been feeling had I not stayed on these boards reading a few times a day.

I feel blessed every day that I don't give up because reading stories like yours give me the determination that I too can change my life. :-D

I found that Shaun T is actually going to NJ on 9/9 and I wanted to go SO bad!!! haha, I really hope he comes to VA sometime - it would be amazing to work out live with him. (He's doing an Asylum workout event). I don't think there are many coaches in central VA, there a NO fitclubs >_<. I guess that means once I get my story completed, that leaves it up to me to get something going here for others that need help. :-)
