I am a father of two young children. We spend roughly $650 a month on groceries, this includes food, diapers, cleaning products, pet stuff, etc. It is getting expensive to feed a family as many of you might know.

I want to start p90x, I have the bar installed, the dvd's downstairs and I want to push play, but I know that if I don't commit to the diet, than I am wasting my time.

After reading the boards alot I observed that ALOT of the p90x users are single people or people who have one significant other. Grocery bills are much less in this case.

I would love some advice on the cost of the p90x diet. Anyone have their average montly grovery bills? I would be interested to see how the p90x diet stacks up financially. I understand there is a lot of fish involved in the diet, and please correct if I am wrong, but fish can be quite expensive.

Any encouragement or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dolfan;
First off -- CONGRATULATIONS on making this choice.
We have three kids, so there are 5 of us. Normal monthly grocery bills arouns 800.00.

I was concerned as well, but there are a lot of cost-effective alternatives out there.

For example, tuna fish -- I eat alot of it.
Salad -- greens are pretty cheap, and one head of lettuce last me a long time. I make a big salad on Sunday, and it lasts the whole week.

Chicken and Ground Turkey. The whole family eats alot of it. The kids don't mind the turkey meatballs and turkey tacos. So they're eating a bit healthier too emoticon

Bread -- switch everyone to whole grain (it's better for us anyway).

We can't afford to finace to complete diet plans either. With a little planning, it's not as bad as it looks. Also, I use the portion plan, so I don't have to buy what they say, and I can mix up with the rest of the family's food.

Please don't overlook the importance of the diet and eating clean and healthy. It really is a BIG part of the program and you;ll get much better results if you do.

Feel free to stop by my thread from time to time Prescription for Fitness - Your r-X
Just commit to pushing play and eating clean everyday.

I don't have a $650 grocery bill so you have me there. What I do have is 2 mortgages, one house that is rented that I lose $600 a month on WHEN the renter pays the rent. A single family income as well. I guess the question is how can you AFFORD not to do the program? THere will ALWAYS be reasons how or why it might not be right. I didn't eat the Swordfish or other extravagant meals during my first 90 days. I did have a lot of chicken breasts, low sodium lunch meats, and the other items in the menu book. What I found is that I no longer eat junk food at all which saves a few pennies. I haven't had a piece of Halloween candy this year now that I think of it! I began on July 28, 2008 with the program and just finished last Saturday round 1. I have lost 31 pounds and more than 10% body fat. I eat less than I did and feel great. My wife is even down 27 pounds. There are changes to be made. Our kids like the food choices and we all eat smaller portions. It works out overall. You owe it to yourself to start! Press play now and when you can make the food changes do it. You'll have results but they may not be as big as you see on these boards. Here is the link to see where I started and where I'm at now.

Good luck,

Tim

Ok, one thing that NO ONE HAS MENTIONED!!!! Portion sizes. When I began back in January, I had no idea the junk I was buying. Yea it was CHEEP FOOD. But, it was not healthy. When I started reading lables and following portion sizes, I noticed I didn't need 1 gallon of milk. Only need 1/2 gallon cause the rest would spoil. Pasta, I just would cook 1 portion (yea I'm a single man) + 1 portion of sauce + 1 big salad (like C0ach Chris mentioned). It's not about QUANTITY... it's about the quality. I know it's hard to believe, but I spend the same amount on food now as I did in January. I learned what to buy. I continue to learn new things every time I got to the store!

I'm not saying you will starve while doing following the nutrition plan, but you will be changing how you eat! I used to spend $200. But I'm averaging around $225 now. I'm using a recovery drink (since starting the X) and my grocery bills have gone down over all. Portion control it the KEY here! And by the way, prices have gone up since January. So I'm really spending less.

Confession time. I cheat on my groceries every day emoticon I work in a restaurant and eat at work; 2 meals and 2 snacks a day @ 5 days a week (average 55 hours a week). But when I had my month vacation in March/April I still ate healthy and didn't spend more than $200.

Hey there! It does seem a bit overwhelming doesent it!? I was intimidated and worried about it at first to. I have a family of 5 husband is deployed so 4 of us each here everyday. Like everyone said change your whole families way of eating this will prevent you from buying healthy snacks then having to buy snacks for the kids(which means your essentially doubling everything). Buy in bulk they have big bags of tyson chicken at walmart. Ground turkey is not very expensive, tuna isnt either. Yes produce can get pricey BUT if you stop buying the junk foods that money will cover your produce. Once you start your going to feel better, look better and your whole outlook on eating will be different. You will be eating to fuel your body to do what it needs to do!

Excellent point. I used to eat a 10 ounce steak without even thinking. (And not a very lean one at that). The food does seem to stretch itself out further when you are controlling the portions.

... and many other things. We used to buy 5 different LARGE bags of chips/pretzels. Probably around 15-20.00 for just that (Susy does the shopping, but I see how much is spent) -- that can buy around 20 cans of tuna (enought for 40 portions).

I really support the notion of getting the whole family involved. In the end, they'll feel much better too. Heck, my 7-year old daughter even comes out and X's with me from time to time!

Think eggs whites, oatmeal, tuna, and some whey protein as your staples. All can be very affordable.
Add brown rice and beans to complete all meals.

From there you can add some the others that you need on a more limited basis. Chicken, turkey, lean meats, and produce.

I have the same issues with the cost of the diet. We are a single income family. My wife stays home with our daughter. We buy certain things in bulk like eggs. We just picked up 36 eggs from Costco for $3.99. One more tip that you may or may not be able to to take adavantage of is farmer's markets. We have one near us that is only open two days a week. On the second day if you go there just before they close all the produce is half off. We just got a weeks worth for $13. Also, check out the Zone Perfect protein bars. You can get a box of 6 (buy 5 plus 1 free) for under $5 at Walmart.

Remember where there's a will there's a way. And use coupons. My wife saved 60% off one of our shopping trips with coupons. Takes longer but it's worth it. Good luck.

Lots of good advice on how to save money and still follow the nutrition guideline. I did buy all of the food for one week of the meal plan once and it came to nearly $200. Some of that was for spices and other items that you wouldn't have to buy every week but yes the meal plan can be expensive. The portion plan however does not have to be expensive.

I have four children, and two of them are in college (one living at home) so I understand about financial pressures. The key to keeping your costs down is to shop around the outside edges of your grocery store. Produce, meats, dairy. Stay away from the processed food in the middle aisles of the store. You can save money and eat better at the same time.

I read an interesting statistic in a book the other day. 30 years ago Americans spent 15% of their income on food and 5% on health care. Today those numbers are reversed. Food has gotten cheaper but also less nutritious and often unhealthy. So your grocery bill may go up if you start buying healthier food (but it doesn't have to go up that much). Think of it is as investment in your health and your future.

I have also found that the diet is expensive, especially because I am eating more now than pre p90x.

I just started using mint.com which you can use to track all of your expenses and see where your money actually goes. Not necessarilly related to the p90x diet, but it can help you cut out unnecessary expenses elsewhere and help you manage your budget in general.
