Any hockey players around here?
Showing 17 results.
I was wondering if anybody use P90X / Insanity as a conditioning program for hockey. I would like to share some of the things that I did and potentially learn from others.

Especially interested in any topics regarding lower body / core strength, stability, agility and quickness training.

Hey,

I play hockey, only in mens league, but I started P90X2 about a month after last season started and I found it really helped with my foot speed and agility. I also have a bad knee (MCL sprain) and found that it helped with my flexabilty and never had an issue all season, I had sprained it twice the year before.

In my opinion, P90X/Insanity is great to get into shape, but P90X2 helps if you are in decent shape but want to take your athletics to a new level. Again, I'm only a mens league player but found this really helped.

This is pretty much the level I play at now. I also coach little kids - this is a lot of fun, BTW.

I think you are 100% correct about P90X2. I did not even try it. I did 3 rounds of P90X, then a round of hybrid with Insanity and then switched to my own workouts. This is what I am doing now:

http://myworkout.garbuz.com/workouts/workout-plan-for-october-2012/

unfortunately I will not be able to finish it in October as I will be going through a knee surgery on Oct 25th and then I would imagine I won't be able to skate at least until December or even January. But this is something that I really need to do. My knee has been bothering me for a long time and it is time to take care of it.

By the way, what would you think about this leg workout that I was doing in my last round of P90X

It is geared a little more towards hockey players in my opinion as opposed to original P90X legs and back. I would be really curious to hear from you about this.

I like the leg workout. Those pistols are killer. How often do you do it?

There would be two excercises I would put in there once in awhile, Box jumps, you could play with the height, but I would keep it 20" and above (ever see the videos of Stamkos doing the box jumps?). The other would be wall ball shots with a weighted med ball. These will help with the quick starts.

I like variety so I would incorporate them but not all the time.

I put it together for my third round of P90X, then when I did the hybrid with Insanity I did not use it and now I do this one instead:

http://myworkout.garbuz.com/workouts/workout-plan-for-october-2012/

this is my current workout plan for October for building pure strength. it includes 6 different workouts:

Sunday – Chest & Triceps
Monday – Legs, Biceps, Core
Tuesday – HIIT (Insanity Max Interval Plyo, or Asylum Vertical Plyo)
Wednesday – Back & Shoulders
Thursday – Cardio (Insanity Pure Cardio, or Asylum Speed and Agility)
Friday – Full Body Training (Spartacus Workout or Asylum Strength)
Saturday – Off

The leg workout is combined with biceps and core

http://myworkout.garbuz.com/workouts/legs-biceps-core-workout/

As you can see I get plenty of jumping in my other workouts that's why this one has a very short (but not easy) part dedicated to legs. My squat weight is 295 and dead lift is 360 so that gives me plenty of leg work especially considering that the next day I will do plyo and the day before I play hockey.

HI

I train hockey players on and off ice. I will be using insanity and asylum with some of them this summer (2013). I also coach up here in Canada and for some of the kids who can not afford personal trainers we have them on P90X and insanity. Great programs and they do the job for what we are looking for. Most of these players are working full time jobs in the summer.

Have any of you done asylum? Do you need any extra equipment?

Thanks
Blair

hey there! always good to hear from out Canadian neighbors emoticon

I did a few Asylum workouts and as far as the additional equipment goes you will need pull-up bar, jumping rope, resistance bands or dumbbells. I would recommend getting weights in the range of 20, 25, 30, 35 lbs. I am almost certain that you will not need more than 35 lbs DBs.

off topic: World Juniors are coming up. Are you planning on watching it?

P90X, P90X2, Insanity, and Asylum would all help with hockey training. You need to be explosive, powerful, and strong in the lower body and all of those programs will help you with hockey.

Very Large Bump.

I was just looking through the different threads and came across this one. I am only an adult "beer" league player, but I would like to attest to the benefits of Insanity on Hockey. The first time I did Insanity, I started mid-season. We were a new team in the league and had troubles with number of players showing up. Many nights we had only 6 skaters. We got more players but every once and a while it was only 6. Towards the end of Insanity, I could almost skate an entire 20 min half. The others would be gasping after 45 seconds, but I was able to stay out there. Yes I wwas gasping for air between whistles, but just like the circuits, I could pick it up again once the puck dropped.

I have also taken a month off from hockey and done 4 weeks of Insanity. When I come back, I have so much more jump in my skating,, and power in my legs. I am no pro by any standards, but it works.

Just thought I would share.
