The Nutrition Expert’s Take on Shakes Shakeology®
By Carrie Morgan CPT, CFNC

As a Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach and Certified Personal Trainer, I am frequently asked about recommendations for “nutritious shakes”, “protein shakes”, or “meal replacements” and have been asked this for many, many years. For those of you who know me, you know I promote a whole-food diet and always recommend that you all get your nutrition from real, unprocessed food like wild fish and organic fruits, & vegetables, not “food” from a package. However, the reality is that despite my pleading & constant effort to educate you on proper nutrition, you are pressed for time with your busy lifestyle and if you do not fully grasp the concept of eating veggies & lean protein, you will quickly find yourselves driving through a fast-food drive thru or purchasing “healthy” meal replacement bars & shakes filled with chemicals. Knowing this, it is my job to research the best options for you and recommend a product that I feel completely confident about.

I have researched hundreds of products over the years but found that most were laden with harmful chemicals and indigestible proteins… until now. I have finally found one that I truly love because it has passed my strict protocol nutritionally in addition to tasting great. I am now thrilled to be able to share my Shakeology discovery with confidence to my clients.

Shakeology is made from whole-food sources, which means no chemicals or additives. The ingredient list is actually made up of 70 whole-food ingredients, not just extracts, harvested from indigenous sources from around the world.

What it has:

1. Highly absorbable protein with all 8 essential amino acids helps build muscles & reduce food cravings

2. Daily supply of 23 vitamins & minerals so you don’t have to take your multivitamin any more

3. Red & blue superfoods are high in cancer-preventing antioxidants

4. Green superfoods help to detoxify the body, neutralize pH, and have anti-inflammatory properties

5. Adaptogen herbs help the body to cope with environmental stresses and toxins

6. Digestive enzymes and pre & probiotic aids improve digestion & nutrient absorption

What it doesn’t have:

1. NO artificial anything- colors, preservatives, flavors, or chemicals

2. NO caffeine- whole foods supply the body with all the nutrients it needs so it eliminates the need for additional stimulants making it safe for everyone

3. NO heat processing- considered a “raw” food, the whole-food ingredients won’t be denatured because they are never heated over 117 degrees, allowing them to maintain the maximum amount of nutrients and bioavailability

4. NO added sugar- certified low glycemic index helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, keep calories low, and promotes weight loss

5. NO gluten- limits bowel irritability while promoting nutrient absorptionn

Carrie’s personal story:

As a Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach, Certified Personal Trainer, and holistic health enthusiast, I feel Shakeology is the best nutrient-dense super-food protein shake on the market and far superior to any protein shake available at the vitamin stores—believe me, I’ve looked and I’m picky. This comes from someone who will rarely recommend any one product over another simply because I’m a firm believer in eating whole, raw foods.

Before skeptically incorporating Shakeology into my routine, I considered my eating style to be quite healthy, practicing what I preach, trying to consume mostly whole organic foods free from chemicals, sugar, dairy, and gluten. Over the years, this lifestyle has helped me to manage my asthma, endometriosis, and irritable bowel syndrome. Now I have found that Shakeology is easy to incorporate into the rest of my whole-food meal plans because it’s made up of ingredients that I am confident are not only nutritious and pure, but healing.

Substituting my morning meal with Shakeology has saved me time and money in preparing an extra meal each day. I am full for hours after I have it even though it’s low in calories. I’m also able to save a boatload of money because I no longer have to take individual supplements to get all my multivitamins, supergreens, and digestive enzymes that I needed before—it’s all in my Shakeology. I’ve noticed a big difference in my energy levels as they’ve gone way up. And without changing my regular workout routines, I’ve noticed my body becoming leaner in areas I previously struggled with toning (yes, even trainers have trouble spots). While I’m sharing secrets, I might as well tell you another benefit I’ve noticed. I used to have problems with nutrient absorption and toxin elimination as evidenced by brittle hair & nails, dry skin, and dark circles under my eyes. I’ve seen a significant change in these areas and I believe it’s because of the combination of adaptogen herbs, digestive enzymes, and phytonutrients working to detoxify my system and allow maximum nutrient absorption.

I also like that there are vegan options as well, for those of you who may want to rotate in animal-free meals or have dairy allergies. I’d recommend you try it as a powerful post-workout recovery shake blended with coconut milk and a half banana or as a meal replacement for breakfast on the go because I know you’ll see and feel the results just as I have. What was once a meal option I wouldn’t consider, Shakeology has now become my favorite meal of the day as well as my healthiest meal of the day.

As always, I welcome your questions so don’t hesitate to contact me.

Carrie.

Great article. Your background, training ans experience are obviously something you bring to the table. So very well written but easy to understand. If I were not already a Shake addict I would be after reading your article. I can't wait to read more.

My only issue with Shakeology is I have had it for almost a month now, and everyone can say oh yeah its great and it gives you all types of nutrients and energy, but since I have started it , I have not noticed one pound lost. Maybe I do have more energy but there is no way I can directly pinpoint it to Shakeology, and maybe its just a mind thing about the less cravings.

Please don't take this as me being a pessimist. But I have not seen any results from this and I am curious how long before I do start to see results from it?

Thanks,

Tony

shakeology weight loss

Hi Tony,
Shakeology is not intended to be a weight loss miracle drink. It is a highly nutritious meal replacement. When used daily to replace a less nutritious, more calorie dense meal then the net result will be weight loss. If your goal is weight loss, you will need to take into consideration all the other elements needed for weight loss including resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, proper nutrition, hydration, and adequate rest. What are you doing for exercise and what are you eating for your other meals throughout the day?
Yours in health,

3. Red & blue superfoods are high in cancer-preventing antioxidants

There is some debate as to the benefits of anti-oxidants. Yes there have been tests done on the relationship between anti-oxidants and cancer but nothing conclusive as far as I know. There is some evidence that supplementing anti-oxidants can even be harmful. Check out the wiki page on antioxidants for starters if you're interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-oxidant

From the wiki page:

Although initial studies suggested that antioxidant supplements might promote health, later large clinical trials with a limited number of antioxidants detected no benefit and even suggested that excess supplementation with certain putative antioxidants may be harmful.

I also just heard Paleo expert Loren Cordain talk about the harm with high doses of antioxidants, and even vitamins and minerals, on one of Robb Wolf's Paleo Solution podcasts. Episode 112 for anyone who is interested.

The new chocolate superfood also does contain some caffeiene from green tea, which used to be decaffeinated -- but now is not. Just putting that out there for anyone who is sensitive to caffeine and/or green tea. I do worse with a cup of green tea than I do with a 12-ounce cup of black coffee. Robb Wolf has mentioned in his podcast that he has the same experience with it. Green tea contains other things that can and do give people heart palpitations.

I'm sure if we all have enough time, we can pick a part any supplement on the market and finding something bad in it. Then 6 months later that statement will be reversed due to some new study. There will never ever be the perfect supplement for 100% of the population, because we are all genetically different.

With that said, the majority of supplements on the market are junk, have chemicals, fillers, synthetically made,etc... As a fitness professional for over 10 years, I have never been a big fan of supplements and shakes. After learning what goes into Shakeology, enjoying the taste ( i just use a spoon and water), and reaping the personal benefits, I can tell you I love the product and would recommend it to everyone. Yes, there will be people out there that have allergies, reactions, etc... Nothing we can control. No different than the same person eating peanut butter for the first time and having an allergic reaction. You read enough blogs online and google enough, you'll find bad in everything. take it or leave it....I love it!

RE: Why Should I Drink Shakeology?
shakeology supplements antioxidant blend antioxidant effects

Greg brings up an important point that I want to expound on in a little more detail. It's important to note that there is a stark contrast between whole food nutrients (as found in Shakeology) and supplements. Strictly synthetic supplements are laboratory-manufactured nutrients that are in some way dissimilar to the natural nutrient. Some nutrients like vitamin E cannot be copied exactly, but their synthetic analogs are inexpensive and so they are used by many manufacturers. Tablets can contain fillers, binders, lubricants, and coatings. Fillers make the tablet large enough to take comfortably when the main nutrient is a trace amount. Binders hold ingredients together. Lubricants ensure the ingredients do not stick to the machines, while coatings make the tablet easier to swallow. These added ingredients can hinder absorption in anyone who lacks stomach acid, experiences digestive problems or suffers from poor assimilation of nutrients.

So to clarify the comment about antioxidants, a growing number of experts in the field of antioxidant research are convinced of the health protective benefits of whole foods but question the use of antioxidants supplements—outside of the whole food complex. Lenore Kohlmeier, Ph. D., of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, affirms that “the evidence is entirely in the realm of food, not in the realm of individual substances. Again, the complex, interrelated combination of nutrients of foods are the only source shown over and over to promote health and tissue repair. Fractions of vitamin complexes do not work as nutrients, but only as drugs with potential for harm.”

Using antioxidants alone as nutritional supplements means ingesting fractions, isolated substances, not whole [food] complexes. It would be like eating the peel of a banana without the banana, or like eating the shell of a nut without the nut meat. The peel and the shell serve an important role, but like antioxidants, they are only the protective, preservative outer layer of the highly-nutritive food complex. Making matters worse, most commercial antioxidants are synthesized, produced in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants as mentioned above. Shakeology ingredients are minimally processed, raw, and from whole food indigenous organic sources. So as for me, I’ll take a Shakeology shake any day over synthetic supplements. It’s the best!
