RE: why can't i lose weight?

I know you said you only eat healthy, nutrient dense foods...can you give us an example of your daily diet, complete with servings sizes (be as specific as possible)?

My guess is that it's something in your nutrition that we need to tweak. The fact that you're eating 3,000 calories per day and still hungry leads me to believe that we need to make an adjustment in food choices, but let's see the diet first just to be sure...

Hi Katie!

The answer to your question could be very simple, or very complex. Without knowing what your are eating, it's pretty hard to say. The answer could range from making small changes to some type of medical problem that has yet to be diagnosed.

I have some nutrition plans that people on my team follow with much success, so I think one of those might help, provided we find out what you are currently eating first.

I see that you live in Austin, I actually work in Austin and reside in Georgetown. I've sent you a friend request, maybe we can talk more here and figure out something that works for you?

Justin

I have a question.
I’m 20 years old. I’ve been trying to lose weight forever and it just isn’t happening. I’m not over weight or anything, I actually weight around 120lbs, which is probably normal but it’s obvious I just have certain spots with lots of fat. I have muscle and want to be able to see it, but right now I can’t because it’s covered up by all the fat, especially around my waist. I’ve done everything and no matter what I do I can’t seem to lose it. I know it has nothing to do with what I eat, because I eat healthy. I only eat nutrient dense foods and eat balanced meals every 3-4 hours. On top of that I’m very athletic and active I work out 6 days a week, I’ve done insanity and I’m currently doing p90X2. I feel like I’m not losing weight because I’m not eating enough, but I’m not sure. I know I’ve kicked up my metabolism a lot by eating right and being active. I used to have the slowest metabolism and now I’ve more than tripled it. In the past when I’ve eaten I have gotten full, but now at least in the past 6 months I feel like I’ve kicked up my metabolism too much and now I’m always hungry. I already eat over 3000 calories a day and after every time I eat I still feel hungry. But it seems when I do eat more I feel like weight is coming off from my stomach, so I think my body is storing fat around my waist because it thinks it’s not getting enough food. Which is crazy because like I said I already eat 3000 calories a day. Then I read everywhere if you cut out calories so much everyday and exercise then you will lose weight. But I’ve tried reducing my calorie intake down to 2500 calories and even 2000 calories and I just feel like I don’t have enough energy and I’m still hungry and even get headaches sometimes. So I am stumped because I feel like in order to lose weight I need to eat more, but I don’t want to because I just don’t like eating that much. Don’t get me wrong I love eating and love the fact I feel like I can eat anything without getting full or over eating but, I feel like I’m eating all the time and can’t take it anymore. Is there a healthy way to slow down my metabolism? Is it possible my body is storing fat, or is it something else? What are your thoughts? I would love to finally solve this problem.

Yes to what everyone said about diet and needing to know more about yours. Also, what are you personal stats? All we know is that you're 20 F and weigh 120lbs. But how tall are you? What is your body fat%? How do you FEEL physically? P90X2 is a difficult program. Are you able to keep up?

3000 calories seems a bit high for your size. I'm 6'1" and 170 and eat about 2600 to maintain my weight with P90X. Hmm. What time of day do you workout? I know I sometimes struggle with early mornings if I workout without eating first.

Alright guys here is an example of my diet

2 slice whole grain toast
1 egg & 3 liquid egg whites
1/2 grapefruit
2 servings of vegetables
1 tablespoon peanut butter

2 servings of vegetables
1 turkey burger
1 whole grain sandwich thin
1 cup of grapes
1 cup low-fat milk

1 apple
1 peach
1 hard boiled egg
1 slice low sodium deli turkey
½ avocado
2 servings of vegetables
1 slice low fat cheese

1 scoop Whey protein powder
1 cup low-fat milk
1 banana
½ cup berries
1 cup of yogurt
12-14 almonds

6 ounces of chicken
2 servings of vegetables (ex. Carrots, cauliflower, broccoli)
1 medium potato
1 orange

It varies daily but I tend to eat 4-5 small meals a day with a balance of fats, protein, carbs in every meal.
I've messed with my diet a lot, of tried eating a higher percentage of carbs, i've also tried a higher percentage of protein and i've tried gluten free. And nothing seems to change i'm still hungry and don't have as much energy when I workout. I used to eat a lot less nutriet dense foods like hashbrowns, and fries and I would get full, but now I eat way better and i'm still hungry. So i think it has a lot to do with how much i'm eating rather than what i am eating. I don't know though.
I hope this helps

Thanks for the breakdown.

The first thing that jumps out at me is the enormous amount of fruit that you eat. Don't get me wrong, fruit is great; I just happen to think that varying your carbs more evenly between things like veggies, fruits, tubers, legumes, & grains is a better approach than eating 7 servings of fruit per day.

Legumes & tubers, in particular, contain resistant starches that can keep you fuller and provide more nutritional punch than fruits like peaches/grapes/oranges, so perhaps subbing in some sweet potatoes, black beans, or squashes for some of that fruit could help.

I'd also think about adding a bit more fat, as it looks like you may be just a bit low, and oftentimes adding fat is beneficial to your hormonal balance (which is a prime component of weight loss).

Just some thoughts...

Good ideas! I probably eat too much fruit myself. I sometime also monitor my percentages in the myfitnesspal app to make sure I got it right for the day.
