Starting Insanity 11-5-12
insanity motivation shape 0 day of insanity
11/1/12 1:24 PM
Hi,

My name is Stephen and I am starting my first round of Insanity on Monday and am looking for any advice on how to start off on the right foot and be as successful as possible.I have attempted to get into shape before and found that I lose the motivation to see it through to the finish. I have recently experienced an eye opening experience that had made me realize that I am young enough to take control of my body and that I don't want to wait until its too late.

Any tips or advice that you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. This is my time to see this through to the finish and I could not be more excited for the changes that I am going to experience in my life over the next couple of months and years.

Great to hear you are taking this step! Way to go! A few quick points are to modify as you need to as you start and watch your form. You want to be in control and push hard but modify where you need to. Don't try to keep up with the folks on the video as they have been doing it for a long time. Also you want to really focus on what you are eating as it is so important to meet your goals. Read the guide and calculate what your caloric intake should be and stick to it.

You will be sore so expect that as well...it is all good.

Many folks find that a good support system helps you through the program. There are a number of support threads here on the boards so check around. I moderate one and would welcome you if you want.

Stay focused on your goals, work hard and you will see great results.

Hey Stephen!!! Great to hear your going to get INSANE!! I am on my last two weeks of Insanity what a ride it has been.

First off make sure your nutrition is in line with your workouts. You need to fuel your body in order to make it through the workouts.

You will find as you go that you will get stronger and able to do more. WORK AT YOUR PACE and as you get more flexible and stronger you will be able to keep pace with the video's.

Have the right shoes I suggest a cross trainer.

I never pause the video's I just take breaks when I need them and have amazing results so far.

Keep Pushing Play every day and you will not be sorry.

I have done 2 rounds of insanity and now still do it every other day and running a few miles on the other days just for some variety...My number 1 piece of advice is don't give yourself time to procrastinate! As soon as you come in the door after work (or wake up in the morning, or whatever is your workout time) just put your workout clothes on and get it done! If you sit down or start doing something else it gets harder and harder to get up and do the workout. number 2...STAY OFF THE SCALE!!!!! So ofter people post here that are frustrated by the number on the scale even though they say they can see a difference and their clothes fit different...Clearly they are getting results but not in the form of a number on the scale, don't torture yourself, just put it away! I weighed myself at the half way point and the end each time and even though I lost several inches, I am within 2 pounds of my starting weight so the scale is crap. Also, be sure to do starting pics and measurements, I didn't my first time through and am still kicking myself because I would love to see those compared to my start of round 2 and now...I know it's a HUGE difference.

Depending on what kind of shape you are in, this is going to hurt, be ready to deal with it and push through the pain, it goes away in about a week and then everything is just a little easier, if you try to take extra days off to let the pain subside, it just takes longer for your body to push through it. Unless it's an actual injury, just get moving and once your muscles warm up you will feel better. Don't get discouraged that you don't keep up with the people in the video...2 and a half rounds later and I still am not with them 100% of the time, take breaks when you need them and go on, don't beat yourself up over it, get discouraged, or think that you can't do it, you can...it just takes a while. If you listen to what Shaun T says about some of the people, there are marathon runners, spin instructors, and even and Insanity instructor in the video and they need breaks too. Get your breath and go!

Sorry this is long winded, but I want you to start out with a good attitude and be ready for what's ahead cuz it's a shock, but make yourself follow the schedule and you will be so happy with the results!

Good Luck!

great to hear you decided to take action and change your life. youve picked the right program because i lost 35+ pounds my first round of insanity and im still going. that 35lbs was the jump start i needed to change my life. not only did my life change cause i lose weight but because im healthier, more confident, happier, and proud of myself.

all you have to do is dig deep, workout everyday, never give up on the program because if you do... your quitting on yourself not shaun t. try your hardest everyday and try to get your form down, thats all shaun t ask of you.

just go into insanity with an open mind. get ready to find the new you and dig as deep as you ever have in your life.

if you have any questions or need some motivation dont hesitate to message me. i added you as a buddy.

best wishes

Thanks for the words of wisdom and advice, one of my biggest concerns about starting a program like this was that I would not be able to keep up and finish. So thanks for addressing those concerns, and advising me on how to push through the pain.

Thanks again for your advice.

Mike,

I have attempted to take control of my of my body before and found that I lost motivation. Although that's no excuse it's the main reason that I signed up for team beach body. I would love to be apart of your support thread, if you don't mind sending me the information on which one it is.

Thanks and hope to talk to you soon.

Stephen - I have to say you have taken the greatest step you can: deciding to change your health by great nutrition and fitness. Stay committed! Each day is different - not only the workouts, but just how you feel each day.
My personal experience can be summarized in this way:
• You have chosen an extreme workout – but don’t feel that you cannot modify where you need to during each video and take a bit longer pause if you need to. Work –up ad much as work out.
• Stay in the moment, as you prepare to work out. If you watch closely, even those who are in the video with Shaun T. struggle. That was a great motivator for me and visually letting me know it's tough and rewarding at the same time.
• Follow the nutrition plan - including the calorie recommendations to the letter. It is tempting to cut calories but in fact this works in opposition to what your goals are and body will need.
• Pick a time of day, especially if you have a heavy work schedule – and stick it out for the first 4 weeks. If the temptation is there to miss a day – remind yourself of your personal “why” you made the decision to change your life. This is your time so be selfish. I traveled all over the world, and I never left home without my video. No hotel workout room in the world could ever be perfect, large enough or empty when I needed it. It also made me feel great I could control my commitments.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or just want someone to help you stay motivated. Best of luck!

Jeff

Hi Stephen,

I just sent you a buddy request if you are interested in having someone to go through this with and motivate each other. I tried this a couple months back and only lasted a week ... I'd rather be outside during the nice weather, so took up hiking but now that it is going to get dark earlier thought I would get back to Insanity. I just thought I offer up going through the same start and if you are not interested I wish you all the best!

Hi Stephen,

I just started Insanity, so hopefully I can relate some of my newbie experiences to help you get started.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but I strongly recommend getting a heart rate monitor. Not only would I likely have had a coronary by now without one, but the feature I like the most is it tells me how many calories I've burned during a workout, and the numbers are huge. Seeing the number of calories I've burned is a great motivator.

This has already been mentioned, but it bears repeating; follow the nutrition plan. And don't thinks this means starving yourself and eating lots of broccoli and granola. Of course you have to cut out junk food, but I think the most important things are to calculate your calorie requirements (the formula is in the book or you can use this form), spreading those calories across five meals, eating an hour before your workout so you have enough energy, and having a good recovery drink/snack within an hour of finishing (a glass of low fat chocolate milk and a banana does wonders).

Don't worry about "keeping up", just give it your all. Currently my "all" is about 10% of what the cast on the video are doing, but as Shaun says in one of the videos, the only number that matters is 100, just give 100% and you're good.

Most importantly, check in daily with Coach Mike's thread. The forums are full of people that want nothing more than to help you achieve your goals. Take advantage of it.

Cheers,
Keith
