food calories help nutrition plan overweight meal plan eating weigh
11/2/12 9:14 PM
Hello! I am a 5'5, 190lbs female and have been following the workouts everyday (I also weigh myself every morning without clothes to ensure it's the same everytime). However, I do not follow the meal plan. I do have a relatively healthy lifestyle -- I do not eat processed foods or any candies, etc. I eat antiobiotic free chicken from Publix (greenwise brand), ground turkey, white or wild rice, organic green beans, organic squash, organic zucchini, and occassionally I eat from Panera (turkey bacon bravo--turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, a sauce they use, and bread--and frech onion soup)--this is literally all I eat with the exception of occasional yogurt..

I have not noticed ANY difference with my body and the scale reflects the same...I do however, not eat 3 small meals a day and 2 snacks -- I normally eat only 1-2 meals a day (typically 1 greenwise chicken cultet --approximately 3-4 oz and a scoop full of white or wild rice with one of the veggies listed above and for dinner it's typically the same or I get Panera) and no 'snacks'. I don't typically eat past 5pm or 6pm and I usually do my workout at 2pm or between 8-9pm.

I'm starting to lose hope! I have continued weeks 1-3 since September 29th because I just started feeling these workouts in areas I think I am supposed to feel them in because I was not an 'active' person at all. I don't want to move on to the next Phase because I want to master Phase 1 first so I can ensure I am working out the muscles that I am supposed to.

I'm becoming very discouraged. I refuse to stop working out because I know it is good for me in general, but I still feel upset :/. I want to see and feel a change with how I look and feel, but it's not happening. I do not take the Shakeology or use any protein powders (I did buy some organic vanilla whey protein that I haven't used yet), and I don't really like eggs...at all...

Basically what I'm saying is that I don't know what to do because although I can feel muscles in my abdomen that I haven't felt before, there is no change in appearance or the way I feel/look. Should I change my diet and eat verbatim from the meal plan? The meals that I would cook would only be for my as my husband won't eat them (I've tried to expand his horizons). I can't afford to buy all of the foods that are in the nutrition guide as they call for larger servings, but I can/will do what I can. I want to stick to a 1,200-1,300 calorie diet, but I always eat less than that (as shown above) and I don't know how to do the percentages (with p90x it is supposed to be more protein than carbs or fats, but in several other diets with 1,300 calories, there's more carbs than protein or fats).

I obviously need to lose weight (I'm 45-60 pounds overweight) so I want to stick to low calories, but I don't know what to do emoticon

I'm very discouraged and am sad because I am trying...really hard...but I don't feel like it is rewarding. I've actually been fluctuating between 4-6 pounds every morning when I weigh myself..

So, any advice will be helpful! I am a structured person so it would be awesome to have my meals planned out or 'grouped' together to where I could 'pick and choose' items..

PLEASE HELP ME emoticon

I'm sorry about the book, but I wanted everyone to know all about my situation so they could provide more accurate help emoticon

Thank you, so very, very, much!!

Amber, you need more than 1200-1300 calories a day, your body needs the energy to burn on the workouts. Do you track your calories on a site like myfitnesspal? You are working against the system by not moving to phase 2, the muscle confusion is what P90X is all about. Also the system as constructed is made to have best results in phase 3. Did you take pictures and measuremenrs? Did you do it again on Day 30, sometimes they tell a story you don't see.

Hi Amber,

Don't get discouraged! I didn't see any results, scalewise, in my first 30 days of Insanity either. Did you take a before picture or measurements? Sometimes if you're gaining muscle, the scale won't change but your measurements will. The fact that you say you're feeling muscles is DEFINITE progress, be proud of that emoticon

As for your diet, did you do the calculations for age, height, weight, etc that is in the nutrition guide? They also have that under the eat smart tab here on teambeachbody.com. If you aren't comsuming enough calories, then that could hinder weightloss as well. As for the 3 meals, 2 snacks, from what I've read, that will help boost your metabolism. You might want to give it a try.

I'm sending you a buddy request and we can talk more details about your meals and diet in general. I had a hard time figuring out the percentages of protein/carbs/fat as well.

Good luck! Don't give up! I'm sure your progress is there..just wait til your done with the 90 days..you'll really see the differenceemoticon

Hello!! Thank you so much for your response emoticon I'm glad you took the time to read my loong post emoticon

How many calories/day should I be ingesting? When I went to teambeachbody.com, under my meal plan it was suggested that I take 1,200-1,300 calories per day to lose weight. What do you suggest?

I didn't feel comfortable moving on to Phase 2 because I don't feel like I have exercised all of the muscles I was supposed to in Phase 1. I didn't think it was a good idea to move into a new phase without mastering the first (since I am so out of shape). Would you suggest me moving onto Phase 2 anyway (I started 09.29.12)?

I did not take any measurements or pictures because I suck and super hate my body...but I will do so tomorrow. I just thought that since I do have so much to lose (45-60 lbs), that there would have been a difference by now :/

I did the HCG diet for a while and lost (and kept off) 40 lbs. I am debating on doing that again and then starting P90x because I am disgustingly overweight and I really want to get it under control (I want to start a family soon -- 5 years from now).

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to read my long post and for helping me emoticon

Have a wonderful day emoticon
Thank you sooooo much!!

Thank you soo much for responding to me!! emoticon

I did not take any pictures or measurements..I will definitely do so soon (today or tomorrow). I was too self conscious to take pictures and assumed that because I am so overweight that I would have noticed a difference (going from doing absolutley NO exercises to doing 45-1.5 hour exercises a day..).

According to the P90X nutrition guide, I was a Phase 2 and was supposed to have either 1800 or 2300 (I can double check when I get home and tell you emoticon )

I know that the 3 meals and 2 snack will help me, but I'm not ever hungry or I don't have access to food at that time. However, I think I'm going to try to do something so that I will have food and to see if there is a difference with me eating more often. I just need to know what I can eat so I can have easier access to it...

Thank you very much for the positive outlook and cheering me on emoticon It really means a lot to me emoticon

I will take/post pictures asap emoticon

Thank you for all of your help and encouragement!!

Remember that the pictures do not have to be shown to anybody or posted anywhere. The pictures are for you and they are very important. My first mistake was not taking pictures. Then I realized I don't have to share. Since then, picture taking has become easy!

AW - Based on your stats, I don't have your age, but you should be around 2000 for weight loss. I know it sounds like a lot, but your body needs the fuel for the workouts. Definitely go up from where you are. As JDP points out, take those pics and measurements, you never need to show them to anyone, but you will be glad you have them. Feel free to ask me any questions you have and come by my post, check out the first page for some good tips.

Glad we can help you. emoticon I agree with the comments above about increasing your calories to keep up with the workouts. Choose foods that are low in fat and fuel your body like complex carbs and lots of fruits and veggies. Panera has some really good, healthy options but I would stay away from dressings and sauces if you can. Those sauces can change a healthy sandwich into something less healthy and higher in fat. You're off to a pretty great start already!

Keep us posted and good luck!

Hey AW. My name is Wendy. Read your post. Let me tell you I was in your shoes as well. I went through 3 weeks of Insanity and nothing other than sore calves and oblique's. I was afraid to move on to month 2 but was told to anyway so I did. I don't follow the meal plan either but try (most of the time) to eat right. I am always hungry and wanting to eat but I try to keep the calories around 2000. I was SOOOOO discouraged! I just kept going because I knew I was feeling better. I finished Insanity last night and I am so proud of myself. I wouldn't take any pics either because I was embarrassed that I had let myself go. But I ended up doing it and the measurements. My last fit test will be next week (couple days late due to work) The first 2 or 3 were sad but then I busted it out on the next one. I still don't have a six pack or anything like that. I have only lost about 4 or 5 lbs. But wow I feel so much stronger. Alot of it in the core. Which I never worked because I never seen results. But just feeling stronger makes it worth the work. I am seeing a difference now. Nothing major but positive none the less. I am not a coach but want to encourage you to keep on the plan. It will pay off in the end. Don't be ashamed of anything. You are taking control of your health and that is more than a lot of people are doing, so good for you! If you want you can hit me up with a buddy request and I will try and help anyway I can. Again I am not a coach and I do not try and get anyone to buy anything!!! I don't buy any of the supplements myself as I cannot afford it. I use Protein powder here and there to make a shake and I eat protein bars if I cannot get a meal. Good luck and I'm pulling for you. Wendy

Amber please do not give up and do the program from beginning to end as they tell you. I did my first Beachbody program 3 years ago with the P90X. I did not see any results the first 30 days. I did see some decent results at day 60 and in the third month, everything started coming together. By the time I finished, I had lost 4 inches from my waist, lost about 15 lbs and had gained inches in my chest, arms and legs. Most of it happens in your last 30 days. Follow the diet plan as well as you can. You are not eating enough. You should be at about 1900-2100 calories a day. I had a problem with my diet because of my work schedule and eventually took nuts, fruit and raw veggies with me for my snacks. The meal plan says to eat about the same amount of calories for each meal, but I found that I was eating less for my snacks and more for my other meals. I started using myfitnesspal.com and that really helped me with my proper calorie intake. You need to make sure that you are getting enough protein in your diet to help repair your muscles and for muscle growth. Lastly, only measure yourself every 15 days and no less than that and take pictures. Pictures and measurements tell the true story. Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing. You are not alone in this. I will buddy list you so we can keep in touch.

Man after being on this board for some time I am beginning to think I have a weird metabolism as I do not understand how you are not losing at 1300. Are you tracking everything that you eat? I mean everything that you eat that is not water? Do you weight your food?

As a man I went from drop 16 lbs in 90 days doing everything they tell you not to do here as far as what kind of foods to eat and I had to have days where I ate under my BMR which means eating 1300-1500 some days and rest at about my BMR.

I did not go into starvation mode and start hording my calories as everyone likes to tell us and I only did 4-5 hours of strength training a week and little to no cardio.

The number of meals you are eating is also not the issue as I ate only 2-3 meals a day. So much for needing to eat 5-6 meals a day to lose weight. If you look at my pic that is me at about 168 lbs and I don't look like I starved myself, gained fat or lost much muscle so the whole starvation mode is bogus for 99% of folks.

As a certified personal trainer and nutrition consultant I don't understand how someone can workout and not lose a single lb in 30 days if their calories are right. Anyone should be able to lose at least 1 lb a week. The whole you don't see results before 60 days is B.S. to me. You are doing something wrong and its not that you are not working out hard.

I see this with 90% of my clients and they all claim to not eat a lot yet fail to lose more than 1-2 lbs a month if that.

Take a look at those on Biggest Loser who weight 300 plus lbs who eat 1200-1500 and drop 30-40 lbs in one week. Granted 95% is water but still they lost something.

Tho say that reason you did not lose anything is cause you gained muscle is also B.S. Gaining muscle is a very slow process even for men let alone women who have very little testosterone. No one is going to lose a lb of fat and gain a lb of muscle in the same time frame.

I just started a 90 day diet and in 18 days I have lost just under 5 lbs and I track my weight daily and have attached my graph of what it looks like. As you can see it will change up and down on a daily bases as weight loss is never linear. And guess what I average about 1500 a day. Does not mean I eat 1500 every day just that at end if 7 days my average intake is around 1500. I started at 176 and looking to get down to 165-160. Over the last 6 months I gained back 10-12 lbs cause I wanted to add some muscle and looking to lose some more fat.

Those calorie numbers are not etched in stone and you need to go by results. All of us are different and our metabolisms are too.

I would suggest you track everything and see if you are really at the calories you say you are and if so I would just with a doctor and test your thyroid.

Amber, I actually went through the same thing! I am 5'4" and started at 214 lbs. I was eating 1-2 meals a day (with one of the meals containing the majority of the calories) and I was at 1200 calories, wasn't losing anything, dropped it down to 1100 calories and still nothing. It wasn't until someone told me to increase the calories to 1500 and to eat more than twice a day that things started happening. My body needed the extra fuel and more importantly my metabolism was so screwed up from the 1-2 meals per day that I had to change when I ate and how much I ate at different times. My body knew it would only get the fuel at certain times and so only burned at those times. The other times it just tried to conserve rather than burn. It took about 10 days at 1500 before I started seeing the scale move and as the weight starts to fall, I am alternating calorie numbers - for example, I am now doing 1500 calories every other day and the other days I am doing 1300-1400 (those days are on the non-cardio days).

As hard as it might be you really need to snack in between meals so your body learns to burn constantly - not just the 1-2 times you eat a meal. It is hard to adjust and sometimes I still miss my snacktimes because of my schedule but as long as I don't miss them everyday my metabolism seems to be working much better.

Let us know how you are doing. Just don't give up - and I think you can still move forward to the next phase with some changes like those I suggest. Just because your body hasn't yet figured out that the weight needs to go doesn't mean you are not ready for the next phase.

Just keep pushing play and let us know what else we can do to help.

-Colleen
