Need a little help
Need a little help

Hi all!

Just started Insanity this week. However, I am having a little trouble (surprised?!). I am unable to do one pushup (sad, yes.) so is it acceptable to do modified pushups until I am able. Or should I just attempt to do one and fall behind on the set?
Thanks!

You can either do modified versions on your knees or slow it down a bit. I can easily do at least 12 good form push-ups, but Sean T moves too quickly on the drills for me. I either do half push-ups or slow down for full.

I recommend modifying any exercise that feels too hard if it means you can keep moving and keep up your heart rate. This is preferable to just stopping and taking longer breaks or hurting yourself. You'll still see results!

Not as uncommon as you think. The pushup moves you can do from your knees you can do that. Some are moving so you can't really do that so I suggest you go down a little, not all teh way and do mini pushups. Online support can be a great tool for getting through an INSANE program like this and I’ve got an awesome group of people doing Insanity and we’d love to have you join us for support, motivation, inspiration, information and friendship. I couldn't do 1 pushup when I started and I still do what I call half pushups. When I started, I did wall pushups and it helped to strengthen my arms a little. I am on recovery week of my 2nd round of insanity and I have been amazed at how much more I can do than I did the 1st round. There is this one move the is hop squats to pushups...I never did those the 1st time so this round when I did them, I was so pumped!

It is absolutely ok to modify the moves. Modify and make sure you have good form and you will improve quickly and stay safe. It's ok to struggle, everyone does when they start out emoticon

No worries at all about the pushups. We have all been there and it is totally normal. You will gain the strength by doing them on your knees. It is better in fact to do a good pushup on your knees then a poor quality one that is not modified. Keep up the great work and you will be doing a regular pushup sooner than you know it.

My advice is as follows if you are interested:

1. Don't weigh yourself, the scale is evil and won't do you good when tracking your progress. Instead you track your measurements and see how your clothes fit. Remember, muscle is more dense than fat. Go to my profile and check out my website, I have an article on there called "Muscle Does Not Weigh More Than Fat". It gives a bit more info about why you shouldn't weigh yourself.

2. Drink a lot of water, it will help you a lot. This is an intense workout so you want to remain hydrated.

3. If possible, use the P90X Results and Recovery and Shakeology or something similar. It isn't in everyone’s budget but they are both great. Talk to me about a free sample of Shakeology if you haven't tried it. I use it daily and love it. It is one of those things you just can’t get anywhere else and is worth every penny.

4. You must follow the nutrition plan as close as possible. It is a huge part of the program and will be very important to your weight loss, muscle gain, getting lean or whatever your goals are.

5. Try workout with someone or have a team of folks you can talk to on a regular basis. I have found that if you can buddy up with someone or a team of people you will have much better results. When you work with other folks who motivate and support you then you will find yourself pushing harder. I have a closed group on Facebook of folks doing P90X, Insanity, many other programs and it is unbelievable how they motivate each other and push each other. Let me know if you want to join it. It is a lot of fun and you will get more support than you imagined.

6. Don't stop. If you get tired don't hit pause. Stop, take a breath, get a drink and then hop right back in it. You will catch up.

7. Finally, remember always that you can do it. It is in your mind. Keep digging through and you will succeed. We all have.

Thanks everyone! I feel like I am cheating when I modify but I just can't keep up with Shaun T. I am confident that I will get better, faster, and stronger!

You will get better and you'll be amazed how much better you'll get. My general rules for Insanity, don't worry about the people on the screen, they have 6-pack abs and 6% body fat and they need breaks. Just do YOUR best, take breaks when you need to (and you will) and modify any moves you have to and just keep pushing play.
