Question about Pigeon Pose
Question about Pigeon Pose

Hi friends!

I have a question about the proper way to do pigeon pose. I always thought you were supposed to sit as upright as possible, but my husband said you are supposed to lean forward. This is my favorite stretch and I do it often, so I want to make sure I am doing it properly.

In this pic I am leaning forward a bit as my husband suggested. What is the proper form? (btw, I am 4 1/2 months pregnant, so excuse the baby belly! ) :-)

Straight up works the glutes if you're pushing down. Leaning forward the groin a little better.

Changing body postures geenraly just changes whats being stretched. So right or wrong depends on what you're after.

As usual, Coach Ed is right on the money.

Proper half-pigeon (which is what you're doing in the photo) includes a full range from where you are to lying all the way down on your belly with the leg under you. At that point it's a wonderful hip opener.

Thanks Andrew! I am looking for a good hip stretch, so I will try to lay as far forward as possible.

The key is really to find the right angle for the leg going under your body. Play around with it until you find something that feels right.

Yes, you can get really deep into this. One thing it took me a while to figure out was not to let my body roll one way or the other but, rather, to find a position where I could keep my body face down and my arms and head comfortably on the floor. All about finding the little spaces in your body, not just one big stretch.

Awesome! I can't wait to take the stretch even deeper post baby. Right now my belly gets in the way a little, but I still do down as far as I can. :-)
