Question about Food and Working Out in the Morning
Hi,

Just this week I started P90X for my first time. Before I got the disks, I didn't realize the length of the routines each day, and I'm finding it difficult to find time after work to get the routine in along with all the other life stuff.

I'm pondering the idea of getting up early enough to do the routine before going to work, but then I start thinking about food and energy for the routine.

Curious about thoughts on early morning workouts, food, and having the energy you need to get through the hour+ (particularly on days like Plyometrics)

Thanks

- Brad

I would try and eat at least an hour before your morning workout if possible, however as you will already be getting up earlier to fit the workout in before work I am sure that is not something you will want to do, so at the very least try eating some fruit like a banana or yogurt before your workout, something you can digest easy, see how you feel during your workout, and go from there. If you don't have enough energy you will not get the most out of your workout..especially on the dreaded plyo days!

I work out at 4 am every morning. I don't eat before I work out. I am on my second round of P90X, and I am doing a hybrid with Insanity. I get up, put on my workout clothes and hit the floor running. I have plenty of energy to get through the workouts. But this is me personally. I also did the full 60 days of Insanity, early in the morning on an empty stomach.

I do make sure that I get a good 7 hours of sleep. If I am really hungry before bed, I may have a small snack of a piece of fruit, or some greek yogurt. If I feel really drained in the morning, I will have a bite of peanut butter, and maybe some banana.

The only way to know is to give it a try. I love working out in the morning. It fuels my entire day. I feel great, and because I have already worked out, I tend to make better nutrition choices. I have a thread going for motivation and accountability, stop by and check it out, for P90X Motivation/Accountability

Try working out on an empty stomach for a couple of weeks. If you don't like it, add in a cup of fruit juice or similar quick carbs for a quick boost. I've been working out on an empty stomach for years, but if I do workout after a meal, it's gonna be at least 90 minutes before I can tackle any type of cardio with adequate intensity without tossing it up. In my book, good sleep is far better for making gains than extra carbs so I wouldn't get up so early as to be a zombie the rest of the day.

Your first round of P90X is gonna kick your butt regardless of how you eat because your muscles are being put into action after a lifetime of easy livin'.

thanks all.

I got up at 4:30 today. had a banana and some water. then did legs and back for the first time.... of course followed by ab ripper x. Everything seemed to go well. I'll probably lay off the banana for the plyo day and just see how it goes.

Great! I like morning workouts better....I just cant seem to convince myself to get up earlier to fit it in..so afternoon workouts are what I do. Weekends I do mornings though.
