why am i not losing weight nor dropping body fat?
Hi,

I am on week 6 (week 2 of phase 2) of PX902. While there seems to be some results when I looked at the mirror, the results haven't been as dramatic as what I see/read from others. It would be great to get some input from others.

Some of background info.

- Personal: I am a 42 years old male, 5'9''. Weight 162 lb (gained 1 lb since I started px902).
- Program: P90x2. I have followed the program pretty strictly with the exception the Yoga days. But I stretch/foam roll almost every day. I also play pick-up basketball for 3-4 hours every week.
- Nutrition: I try to eat 2000-2400 calories per day. I did the fat shredder during phase 1 and now on energy booster (i am a bit high on protein and low on carb, 40/30/30 p/c/f). A example would be'
Morning
- whey powder w. skim milk
- coffee
- work out
- Another whey powder w. skim milk
- 3 egg white + 2 egg with a whole wheat wrap
Lunch
- 6 oz (raw weight) grilled salmon or tilapia with a whole wheat wrap
Dinner
- Cucumber and tomato salad w. feta cheese and vinegar.
- 16 oz (raw weight) roast beef with a whole wheat wrap
- 5 oz of red wine
Evening snacks
- Two fruits (apple/pear)
As I said earlier, I have gained 1 lbs after 6 weeks and my body fat has stayed at 15-16% range. I had hoped to at least improve one of these two numbers. I do notice that I am always thirsty since I started the program and drinking tons of water every day now.

Am I doing something incorrect?

A one pound weight gain is within the margin of error of every scale I know. So let's just say your weight has stayed the same. I say this so much I feel like a scratched record, but how are you OTHER measures of success coming along? What are your physical measurements looking like? Has your body changed significantly? Do you feel stronger? How is your endurance? Also, at 5'9" and 162 lbs you don't need to lose weight. You might want to transform your body somewhat, but that isn't going to come through significant weight loss. Rather, you probably need to put on some muscle. It's possible that process is being stymied by not eating quite enough to support it, or else it's just taking your body time.

Also, a note about being "constantly thirsty." That's a symptom of a number of things, including diabetes. Have you had a good check up and bloodwork recently?

Hi.
P90X is more for body transformation and not losing or gaining weight. It will burn your fat (i.e. fat shredder phase).
As far as not dropping body fat, try 50/30/20 (p,c,f) or go back to phase 1 diet.
You can try little pseudo Atkins see if that works.

Yes my goal is not to lose weight but to tone my body. I actually dont mind putting on some weight as long as its muscle. I was expecting to see lower body fat after 6 weeks but so far has not.

I think you really need to focus on building a little more muscle instead of burning off the minor amount of fat you have. The best way to do that, IMO, is to try zig zagging your calorie intake. Read THIS ARTICLE by Steve Edwards for much more detail about how to do that.

Hey there, I read over your post and crunched your #'s. I've coached many customers to success on this routine, and myself went from 12% to 4.6% body fat from P90X2. It's a great routine!

However the schedule can seem confusing so here's what I'd do, but this is just my advice. You can check my bio to see my results so hopefully that gives me some credibility.

First of all, you need to make sure you're accurate with calories. Tracking with myfitnesspal or loseit.com (or their smartphone apps). By tracking I mean no measuring cups / spoons, you need to be weighing all of your food on a scale, preferably a digital one in grams or ounces. If you're off a little bit here and a little bit there, you won't get the results you want. (or you may, but hey I don't like to roll dice with my time and effort) Also whichever app you use to track your food, double check the nutrition facts and make sure they're accurate.

So here's the diet I'd recommend for you for best results based on your height / weight / age and the fact that you're doing X2.

Workout Days - 2000 calories at 30% protein 40% carb 30% fat
Yoga / Rest Days - 1600 calories at 40% protein / 30% carbs / 30% fat

Additional tips:

Try to get all your calories within an 8 hour period, same 8 hours every day. Zero calories in the other 16 hours. (Example I do 1-9pm daily)

Try to get all your calories in 'post' workout.

Ditch coffee, switch to a pre workout drink with caffeine instead, take 30 minutes pre workout (it burns more fat)

Take 5g of basic creatine monohydrate daily, doesn't matter when.

Eat a well rounded meal 30 minutes after exercise.

Drink 8 glasses of water a day (preferably 2 gallons, especially if on creatine)

Get 8 hours of rest

Eat 2-3 veggie servings a day

Consider Shakeology if it fits your budget.

Get on a quality multivitamin (like opti-men), fish oil, calcium, and d3 supplement (some calcium / d3 come as a combo, look for those)

Stick as close to X2 grocery list as you can, Costco has great prices.

Don't do a recovery week unless you think you 'really' need one. Most people don't, especially with 2 rest days a week.

Thanks for your suggestions Jake. Your profile is inspiring!

What did you mean when you said my routine looked confusing?

You dont eat anything until 1pm? What if you need to work out in the morning?

I play 3-4 hours of basketball on weekend. Is that interfering with my P90x2?

Thanks

I would recommend eating fruit earlier in the day so you burn off the sugars. Some are high in sugar and might be contributing to weight gain. Also recommend not eating 2 to 3 hours before bed. If you haven't broken down your food, it sits in your stomach, which can mess with your sleep and may also contribute to added weight gain.. It helps to keep a food journal for a month or so. Good luck and hope you get the results you desire! emoticon
