Back went out - now what to do?
I was doing week 10 of P90X - lean, core workout, when my lower back gave out. This is an old problem but it has not surfaced for many years, until now. The pain runs all the way down my right leg and after sitting for any length of time I look like an 80 year old tryiong to walk - it just hurts from my back to my knee. It is slowly getting better as it alwyas has. My question is, when it does get better, which may be several weeks, where I do start working out again? I used to think my lower back problem was from weak ads, but now I am confused. any thoughts? Thanks

A couple thoughts.

#1. that kind of shooting pain down your leg can be caused by an IMBALANCE in your core muscles. If you've been working super hard on your abdominals while neglecting the rest of your core, back pain can result.

#2. I had a really life-changing experience relative to back pain (which I used to suffer terribly from) when I read Dr. John Sarno's book "Healing Back Pain." The short version is that he, a Columbia University Orthopedic Surgeon, came to believe that most back pain has emotional roots, just like emotional stress can cause your skin to break out or things like that. It's a short book and well worth checking out. I haven't had back pain in 15 years since I incorporated his thinking into my lifestyle.

From your description it sounds like what I felt when I slipped a disc in my back and had pressure on my sciatica nerve. The pain/tingling/and numbness ran down my right glute all the way down my right leg to the bottom of my foot. I would suggest you have this checked out before doing anything else. Especially if you have history of back pain or problems.

If this is the same or similar issue - when the swelling goes back down and the pain is gone - depending on how long it's been would determine if I started my program over again or continued.

A weak core does not help your back at all, the stronger the core the better. However, bulged/slipped/ruptured discs are injuries that can accrue from a sports motion or even bending over if your core is very weak. I try to be aware of my motions and moves whenever I'm working out - believe it or not yoga is where I watch the most.

Have patience, and talk to your doctor.

Wish you a quick recovery.

Donna

I would consult a doctor before doing any further workouts. The pain you described sounds identical to mine from a back injury last year, just mine was on the left side. I ended up with a herniated disc, that was aggravating my sciatic nerve. My doc had me out of commission for about 9 months before I was approved to workout again. I wish you the best in getting better.
