Trouble with fat shredder
Trouble with fat shredder

Hey there, long time listener, first time caller.

I was doing Power 90 for a while (about 40 days) before starting P90X in order to get to a decent level of fitness and get pumped. It really seemed to work well for me. I cut out processed foods, junk and soda, but didn't really follow a concrete meal plan. When I went to P90X about a week ago I decided to get serious about nutrition. I began the Fat Shredder phase about 2 days after I started (next trip to the supermarket).

So, only about 6 days in, I feel awful. I have no energy in the mornings and, especially, don't have the energy to do the workouts. What I managed to do 15 reps of in week 1 I can only do 9 now. Plyometrics just murdered me less than halfway through, I was tumbling to the ground in style even faster than the first time I ever tried it.

I've heard, on these boards and elsewhere, that the fat shredder often causes these problems because of the sudden drop in carbs. However, as I've heard elsewhere, I should stick with it until I'm within 2% of my body fat goal, which I'm not. I'm around 13.5% (according to my electronic body fat monitor), I'd hope by the end of the program to get to 10-10.5%. However, I don't see how I'm going to achieve any of my goals when I can't even complete any one day of the program anymore, let alone that I feel generally awful all day long. If I'm eating 3000 calories per day made up in protein anyway, but no longer getting the calories out in the workout (or pumping the muscle so that it eats more calories), then I'd be gaining weight and not losing it anyway, no?

Should I jump to the energy booster now, or do some sort of 3/4 day hybrid of energy booster and fat shredder?

It's incredibly discouraging to get *significantly* worse at the workouts in week 2 than in week 1. I'm getting the feeling that it's much more important to focus on cardiovascular health and muscle growth than it is to focus on peeling the body fat off.

At 13.5% body fat, go ahead and move to the next phase.
