Hip Flexors Pain... need to modify P90X? UPDATE
Showing 18 results.
EDIT - CHECK UPDATE POST BELOW

hi everyone,

so quick updated info: 5'7", 193 to <183 lbs now, and on day 36 of P90X... or just another rest day, and I need some help.

So just this past week of Phase 2 Week 1, I decided to try to work a little harder on P90X, but then I noticed a bit of pain and/or soreness in my left hip flexor. My right one is surprisingly OK, but my left one is pretty tough. I do feel soreness, but I don't know if there's a difference in soreness and hip flexor pain. I can barely lift my left leg up, but it cannot go too high... Bringing my knee into my chest is especially tough, and when I sat down to try to do a practice rep of Ab Ripper X's "In & Outs," I couldn't even lift my left leg to go in. I'm not sure if a slight sharpness of pain is supposed to be there, too...

I did a Google search and saw that it is normal, but I don't know how bad the soreness can get. Weird part: this soreness/pain is coming in after recovery week, and not from Week 1! Can it get that bad that I can't lift my leg to do some or most of Ab Ripper X's routines involving legs, or are we actually talking about a pulled/injured hip flexor?

Also an FYI, prior to starting P90X, I had left ankle injury that had me on my right leg and crutches for several weeks... about 5-6 weeks.

Any help is appreciated; the 2nd last thing I want to do is rest more than a few days, and the very last thing I would want to do is quit. Pain is temporary, but quitting will just last forever... (thanks, Lance) and I can't quit. Thanks!

RE: Hip Flexors pain vs. soreness difference from P90X? HELP!

As always, I caveat this with the statement that only a real medical professional who is in the room looking at you can truly diagnose an injury. It sounds to me like you may have a muscle tear. Particularly I think this because if you were on crutches prior to starting P90X you would have lost some strength in that leg and created a muscle imbalance. You should definitely seek professional help and most likely some physical therapy before you jump back into it.

so if I have to stop P90X and then jump back on it later, should i get back on schedule or restart everything?

Let's see what the doctor says, first. Normally I recommend that people jump right back in if it hasn't been too long and they haven't lost conditioning.

hmm... okay, definitely. My doctor won't be in until next Monday, so I guess patience, resting and ice will have to do for now.

for sure! i did Plyometrics with the intensity level dropped a bit, since I tried to turn it up last week. the hip actually felt better when I woke up, so it might be soreness... but we'll see as time progresses.

As always, thanks again, Andrew!

UPDATE!

Okay, so here I am on day 44, and weighing in now at 180-181. I checked with the doctor yesterday and he is saying it's a small strain around the hip. He said that it's best for me to modify and drop down the intensity, but I'm wondering if it's even better to rest for a few days or a week. Since last Monday, I've been icing it and it has been getting better, but still not 100%.

If I choose to modify, can I get some tips? Yoga X will be a bit difficult to do because of the Downward Dog Leg Swing for my left leg, and a few other ones. Kenpo X, the ball kicks will get my left hip tired and with the pain, it'll just make me kick at shin level. Modified Plyometrics and still get a lot of sweat off.

Biggest issue is Ab Ripper X! How do I modify Ab Ripper X?! I've skipped 2 Ab Ripper X sessions, so chances are, I may have to make it up soon.

Recovery week is coming up, too... Core Synergistics might be a scary one for me. Anyway I can modify the Plank/Chataranga (sp?) run? Or should I just skip it with just jogging in place?

Do plank and chataranga from your knees. That will greatly lessen the amount of strain on your hip.

I'm glad to hear it isn't anything too serious.

Not a bad idea. I will have a whole lot of planning to modify almost every Ab Ripper X move... I don't want to skip ab/core workout, but I may need to find some alternatives...

But yes, definitely glad it's nothing too serious!

I unmarked the "Answer" for the moment if that's okay with you, Andrew... 'cause I keep having questions, haha.

I'm just curious as to what I can do to modify Ab Ripper X. I'm trying to place into my routine what I can do... I can do the cross-leg sit-ups for sure, and maybe a combined version of Pulse-Ups/Hip Rock and Raise... which is basically a cross-legged Pulse-Up... maybe the leg raise, and Mason Twist with the feet down. I'm trying to incorporate some other moves such as the "Steam Engine" and maybe holding the Plank position for 2-3 times of 30 seconds each. Is there anything else? I don't want to skip, because I'd like to keep my abs a bit conditioned.

That's a really hard question since it's your pain and hip. Most of the Ab ripper X moves have some element of hip flexor movement. If it were me, I'd just lay off ab work entirely until the hip is healed and put my energy to other things. But if you must do ab work then follow your instincts of trying things slowly and testing them out.

Also, I generally mark things as "answered" to help me keep track of them but if you want to keep asking questions in this thread I'll leave it unmarked.

Thanks, Andrew! Yeah, I'll take it lightly and make sure not to overdo anything and slowly test things out. It's weird, because I'm not entirely sure if it's a hip flexor muscle and/or groin muscle. the pain may start around pants' line.

so good news... the hip/groin muscle strain has recovered for the most part. i can do all the moves now, but i am just a bit sensitive about it, so i'm gonna keep my reps low, and slowly move up.... but greatest news is that it's feeling really good!

That's good to hear. Nice job taking care of yourself instead of pushing on and injuring yourself worse.

Myofascial stretching is the best thing that I have personally experienced. You may want to look into it!
