Month two of Insanity and hitting a wall
Hey everyone, a little background on me: this is my first post on this site. I've always been fairly active - half-assing it at the gym mostly on treadmill. Got pregnant with my third child and was pretty sick through the pregnancy so I was mostly couch-bound. After having my son I wanted to get back in shape quickly. On a whim I decided to try Insanity. My son is now 12 weeks old and I'm on week two of month two.

I've really liked it for the most part. Felt really powerful and excited in month one. I knew my stamina increased almost right away. By end of month one I had lost about 5 inches and probably a couple of pounds (don't have a scale).

Now I'm in month two and damn its hard. Obviously the workouts are harder but they are also just so long. My knees are sore, I'm tired and I just have to push, push, push through it. I am also feeling impatient about the results. I really can't wear all of my pre-pregnancy jeans yet and just feel discouraged to be working so hard and not be a hardbody yet. Ha.

I'm also having a challenging time with the diet. I eat pretty healthily but in the past I've lost weight by cutting calories - perhaps neurotically. My relationship with food is complicated (as is everyone's I guess). Now I'm doing insanity and breast feeding so according to the Benedict Equation I need more than 2000 calories a day. It just ain't happening.

Anyway I could go on and on but I'm just whining I think. Any words of wisdom or encouragement?

I'm a man, so I'm going to be very non-specific about diet while breast feeding as I know pretty much nothing. But eat what nutrition you must to fuel you and your baby. Seriously, we all want to look and feel better, but some mistakes are permanent.

By your own account, you are kicking ass. You are going at a rate of, what, a little less than an inch per week? That is way more than a couple of pounds. I'm about two weeks behind you and the scale is telling my I'm not doing well, but I feel strong and folks are telling me how much better I look.

Remember you are also building muscle. Take a couple of days off and you'll see how much easier it is to scoop that kid up and swing him around!

As for your knees, I can't stress enough that you need to be kind to them. If you damage the tissues, you will be unhappy for a very long time. My wife has scar tissue from doing step aerobics 25 years ago. She still has to do physical therapy to avoid taking meds for it.

You went from couch to Insanity with no real ramp-up, that is going to be a huge challenge on your body. Progress comes with time, just don't hurt yourself from impatience.

I agree with your knees. They should not hurt. If they do, check the floor surface. I had to buy some foam matting and throw a rug over them. Much better after that.

Also you NEED to ensure you are eating enough. Because you are hitting a wall I will say you are not. Try to log your food through my fitness pal or something like that. Be honest and log it over a few days. You may be very surprised.

Stick with it though. Month two, you really find out why it's called Insanity :-)

Congrats on your third child!! It's really REALLY impressive that you picked up Insanity just 4 weeks after giving birth!

I think your goal should be to hit that 2,000 calorie count everyday because 1) it'll give you fuel for the workouts 2) it'll help you blast fat faster because your body won't feel like it's starving and needing to hold onto its weight. Does that make sense?

With that said, you are doing GREAT! Remember, it took 9 months to put the weight on it may take just as long to get it off and get to your goal....but it is worth every second. 5 inches is HUGE! I agree--month 2 is insanely (no pun intended) hard. As long as you are pushing yourself to failure you are going to see great results...even if you are having to pause or skip a couple of reps because you HAVE to (not because you want to)

I think you are doing great! Do you have an accountability group or a group of friends that support you? I'm in a group on Facebook I started after not having a whole lot of positive, supportive friends of my weight loss. We share tips ,meal plans, questions, progress, etc. We also do a monthly challenge and giveaway....one of the girls just finished P90X and you should see her! After 3 c-sections she has abs like Pink! I think having the group helps keep me motivated, and it's also a great place to get help. Would you like me to add you? My profile is fb.com/kaleesorey if you want me to emoticon

Thank you. I know I'm kicking ass but I'm just struggling with pushing through it. While I looked forward to my workout during the first month, now it's a means to an end; something I HAVE to do. I want to love it.

Yea - my knees. I've been kind of ignoring the pain and soreness but don't want to screw them up long term. I got new cross trainer shoes hoping that would help. I'm also on carpet and wonder if that's an issue.

The food - I've reviewed the nutritional supplement and it makes total sense. I've always kind of eaten like that - small meals through the day, high in protein. Right now it's difficult with an infant (and a three year old) to have the time and energy to put together meals. So I rely on snacking through the day - nuts, apples and almond butter, a string cheese. I make a quiche a week and eat through the week. I just need more grab and go things I guess.

SoreyFitness - the fb group sounds good. I'll look for it. My name on fb is "Frances Houseman." Thanks for the invite.

I hope the new shoes help!! The carpet may make it worse too because it doesn't allow you to pivot. Just take your time and make modifications where you need them because you don't want to risk an injury where you can't workout at all, you know?

It sounds like your nutrition is perfect even with your 3 year old---you're a rockstar!!!

I looked for you, but there are several Frances Houseman shockingly. emoticon My unique url is facebook.com/kaleesorey if you can add me.

How was your thanksgiving? Did you stay on track? I took Thursday as my rest day and really enjoyed it. I am back on track this week though emoticon

One of the things that has helped me with nutrition during Insanity is prepping as much as I can on the weekend, usually Sunday. I write my menu for the week, make a shopping list, and make a prep list. The more meals you repeat, the easier it is. I spend a couple hours on Sunday grilling chicken for salads and wraps, making shrimp cocktail platters, portioning cottage cheese, cooking protein pancakes, etc. It makes it so easy during the week when I'm getting ready for work in the morning. I just check my menu and grab what I need for the day. If you take some time out of one day a week to set yourself up like this, your week will be a breeze! Best of luck to you, take care of those knees and hope you get through month 2!
