p90x Yoga
11/20/12 9:59 AM
Hey Beachbody lovers! My husband and I are almost finished Week 10 of p90x and are seeing great results. I have lost just over 13 lbs and 3 inches off my waist AND hips! I used to HATE the yogax video but now it is one of my favorites, as I can keep up with Tony... minus some of the crazier static poses, that is. My question is, however, my Heart Rate Monitor tells me my HR remains under 100bpm throughout the video. Am I still burning calories? Should I lower my caloric intake on Yoga days?

P.S. I'm not "touched in the head" enough to be pulling Doubles anytime soon. Working out 6x/week is enough for me emoticon

HEllO,

Definitely you can lower a little on days your not burning as many calories. Do you track your calories to know your intake & burn?
I wouldn't go to low as you will need your calories for energy too.
Your still burning calories just not as many on days that your HR stays higher.... your HR monitor doesn't tell you how many calories your burning?
let me know if you have anymore questions. Carlie

Congrats for having come this far in P90X! Week 10 was the magic week for me. Everything got so much easier. And great work on the weight loss and physical improvements.

So what accounts for your heart rate staying lower when doing Yoga X at this point in the program? For starters, your muscles are stronger and more efficient. They can now do more and tolerate more. Your heart is also pumping more efficiently, so it too does not have to work as hard. Your body has undergone a major tune-up. You are still burning calories, just more efficiently. Even if you are burning less calories, the difference should not be significant.

The nutrition guide recommends that we eat more not less at this point, because fat is being metabolized regularly, but we still need to restore the carbohydrates to keep the system running optimally. If you are tempted to eat less, you may find that you feel more tired. I used to run out of gas around 10 o'clock every day, until I learned what the problem was.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Good info...

I know for myself I have to eat less on days I don't burn as much & Im continuing to loose weight & have plenty of energy, but i keep track Of what I eat compared to what I burn to make sure I keep enough food for energy. Carlie

Don't bother with doubles. Yoga is more of a flexibility / recovery day. You still burn more calories than doing nothing of course.

On yoga days I'd drop calories from between 200-400 what you normally eat, and definitely skip any recovery drink if you normally have one.

Thank you for the responses! As my husband and I just purchased our HRM's this weekend, we have not been able to accurately count our burned calories during our workouts. My HRM said I burned about 125 calories in the first 45 minutes of yoga, which seems a little low.

Interesting information about the more efficient calorie burning now. It's super encouraging to see our progress through the videos, we have seen the biggest change in yoga and ab ripper! The frequency of 4-letter words directed at the tv have significantly decreased!

One more question... After a maintenance couple of weeks over Christmas, we were planning on starting Insanity for January and February. We have built muscle through p90x but still have a layer of fat over them. Will Insanity allow us to maintain those muscles as well as burn tons of calories? Because from what I have seen, Insanity seems like cardio overload! True? Thoughts?

Yes it seems low but you needs the yoga emoticon

LOL....yes the four letter words would fly at the TV around here to until I got used to the workouts.

I've done insanity twice & yes it will keep the maintain the muscle you have & add more plus help lose the fat you have....it is cardio over load great for burning calories. My thoughts on Insanity LOVE IT! its a wonderful program. Carlie

Sounds like you're making great progress and just need to keep doing what you're already doing. If you are concerned that Yoga X is no longer difficult enough for you there are alway new variations and modifications that will crank the difficulty right back up. But in the scheme of P90X it's really intended as an active rest and recuperation day.

I don't really agree with lowing calories on days that you don't work out as hard. I really think it is a good idea to keep calories the same everyday. I would use the yoga day as a day that your body can catch up and have enough nutrients available to repair and restore.

I get why someone would think that lowing calories would be benificial, but I also think that keeping your calories the same is also benificial. Consider it a "re-feed" day.

My husband and I are on our FINAL week of p90x! Stretch tonight, then Core, then Yoga and we're done!! When we started, I set a somewhat lofty goal to lose 18 lbs - which would take me down to 150 lbs. I weighed in this morning and I was at 150.75 lbs!! We are so excited to take our final pictures and measurements and compare them to our chubby day 0 pictures. We plan to take 2 weeks off during Christmas and start Insanity on the 28th. And by "off," I mean we will squeeze in workouts where we can and continue eating clean, with the addition of a few of our favorite Christmas treats to reward ourselves emoticon I'll post my pictures if I can figure out how!

Fantastic! Now that you have the first round under your (shorter length) belt, take that well-deserved break, but stay with the nutrition, as this will ALWAYS be 75% of the battle.
Enjoy,
Brian
