Increase Calories?
11/20/12 12:21 PM
I have eaten pretty low calorie (1800 range) since starting beach body programs over a year ago. I reached what I am assuming is a plateau. So I started increasing my caloric intake about 100 calories a day every week or so and am currently at 2200 calories and have been for several weeks. I'm not gaining weight, losing weight or burning fat. Should I continue to increase?

Hard to say.

It may be worth looking at what you're eating and when too. I have had sucess breaking through a plateau by adding a tablespoon of peanut butter to my last meal and not having it in my breakfast in the am.

Also, taking out my protein shake and eating it from a lean protein source has jump started things again.

I would need to know more about what your doing to give you a better idea.

Just by looking and with out knowing your age/weight I would add an oz or two of protein at your lunch and same with your dinner.

I know that Snickers is super yummy, but out of all the nutrition bars, this one is at the bottom of my list. PureProtein, Oh Yeah, Supreme Protein are also tasty and I think are better (way less sugar) Or you could make your own with whey, peanut butter, oats and have a much healthier snack!

I agree with the above. It would be helpful to know your weight and age. What does the P90X nutrition guide say you should be eating? Also, you mention hitting a plateau- what is your goal? Ways to get through a plateau are many- zig zagging calories, increasing intensity, changing the stimulus, etc. Have you been doing P90X for over a year? How long have you been plateaued. The more info, the better we cna help!

Cheers!

I was actually eating the Pure Protein brand, but changed when my friend said I was consuming to much protein. He recommended these because of the carbs

You need to protein to help rebuild. Switch back to the Pure Protein bars. Add more protein to your lunch and dinner. You are eating plenty of carbs and unless you have existing liver or kidney problems you are not eating too much protein.

With as long as you have been working out, your body need the fuel so I would increase your calories and maybe do a zig zag as was suggested, but I would have a high carb day and a low carb day (SAME calorie target)

That will help you find your bodies "sweet spot"

I get so much conflicting info with protein consumption. I was eating more protein but was told to decrease because it was to much. I am currently eating 160g of protein. a little more then 1g per pound of body weight which is what I was told was ideal. I used to eat 260g.

I think that is a good measure to start, but everyone's body is different. If you feel like you have hit a plateau, I would play around with your amounts. My body responds much better to higher protein and less carbs. I would try and zig zag your ratios and find out where your body likes to be.

IMO the real issue is that you need to eat more. Even with the Snickers bar you have a tremendously healthy diet compared to most 18-year-olds. But at your age, height and weight I'm going to guess you've still got some more growing to do. Don't under-feed that. Your metabolism at 18 is much different from those of us who are older. Enjoy it while you can.

Andrew offers good advice. I think concentrating on overall calories- eating enough and you will be fine!
