When I decide to do X Stretch in the morning, my body is pretty tight. During any of the hamstring stretches, it is impossible to straighten out my neck because it hurts so much. This limits me from stretching out my hamstrings as much as I would like to. The pain runs all along down my spine. Why is this happening? What could I do to fix this? Or will this always be a problem? :/

Hi Kevin,

Do you always feel this pain? Is it still hurting? or just in that stretch? Do you have neck/back issues? Your statement about pain running down makes me worried about nerves etc- perhaps pinched? I highly recommend you talk to your doctor.

Try stretching an hour or so after you get up and see if that makes a difference. Your body may be stiff from sleeping in the same position for 8 or so hours. I've had similar issues being stiff in the morning and have found that waiting a bit and then trying to stretch makes a difference. Maybe you're sleeping in an unnatural position without knowing it, which over time can cause stiffness and pain. If the pain continues, see a doctor and/or chiropractor.

The same thing happens to me as well. I'm normally very flexible, but when I do Yoga X or X Stretch first thing in the morning, I find that some positions and stretches are harder due to the stiffness. But at any other time of the day, I'm fine. I would try waiting at least an hour before doing the stretch. If you don't have the time to wait, you might want to warm up a little first- do some jumping jacks, run in place, anything to get your heart rate up. It's like Tony says in one of the workouts, you don't want to stretch an icy cold body.

Good advice above. One thing I'd add is a question: What are you doing with your head and neck during these hamstring stretches? I'm going to guess you are straining to get farther into it and actually pushing your head and neck forward. Don't do that. Find your hamstring flexibility in your middle, not at your neck.
