Check Your Heart Rate! Check Your Heart Rate!
I have to say, the best thing I've bought gadget-wise this whole year is my Heart Rate Monitor!

It is like having a personal lie detector, safety alarm and motivator all in one.

Why Lie Detector?
It helps you understand the difference between perceived effort and actual effort. Some days you are sucking wind but it was really lack of sleep, not effort. Some times you feel like you are rocking it, and the numbers show you are right.

The best part is it takes the guess work out of calories-burned.

Why Safety Alarm?
Ever feel a little dizzy during a workout? I know from the data that when my heart rate nears 170 I'm going past sucking wind to feeling a little woozy. Now I know if that 30 second break has brought me back to a safe heart rate of if I need to pace myself a little. That is why he keeps saying to check it to know you are safe!

Why Motivator?
I know, NUMERICALLY, what my effort actually is. No matter how I feel, my goal is to get my heart rate into the fitness zone. Every day I not only cross off the workout from my calendar, but also write down the calories burned, average heart rate and max heart rate. I hate write down that I slacked, so I am motivated to always do my best.

Anyways, I'm not selling anyone devices. I don't care which one you use. I just wanted to share with folks that they are a great addition to my workouts and probably yours as well.

I've been considering getting one, which one do you use and (if you don't mind sharing) how much did it cost?

I spent about $100 on a Polar FT7. They are available online for less than that.

What I like about it is it calculated calories using my gender, height age AND weight. So, theoretically, the algorithm is more accurate. I also like that it was small enough for me. Some of them get silly-huge. When I drop for pushups it isn't in the way.

Note when buying that some models have male and female sizes. Hope that helps!

How do you know your target heart rate for weight loss?

My HRM has that built in. There are websites with calculators out there but I haven't really looked at one since I bought my HRM.
