Best Weighted Vest
Best Weighted Vest
weighted vest

Hi all,

I have done a little bit of research on weighted vests on this website and others and found that V-Force and MiR weighted vests are generally regarded as the best two. I would be using the vest for pullups, pushups, and ab work.

What preference do you all have on weighted vests for this purpose? I noticed MiR is cheaper by about $50 for a 60 lb vest (about the weight I want). I am concerned about functionality, durability, and ease of maintaining.

I appreciate all comments!

I have yet to used weighted vests, but I had almost planned on it..what are you planning on using the vest for? If it's push ups/pull ups you can add resistance without a weighted vest!

Yep, push ups, ab work and pull ups. I already have the form down (and hard modifications where applicable). I would rather not have a sky-high rep count... What method do you use to add resistance without a weighted vest?

There are a couple of options. For abs, you could crunches with a weight plate behind your head (just do them slow and controlled, avoiding injury is key when adding weight to things like this) and then for push ups, I put on a backpack and put a weight plate in the backpack and do my best to keep it balanced on my back while I do the push ups. Things like big books would also work well for that too. You would not be adding 60 pounds but it is extra resistance, you will feel it. And pull ups, well, I am actually going to post a link to a youtube video that shows it very well. I will try to describe it though: basically, hang a dumbbell in between your legs, go to a dead hang on the pull up bar and allow the weight to slide down and rest on your calves (put a pillow down if you must to keep it from hitting the floor) and from there you should be able to do the pull ups with resistance. Here's the youtube video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10dA5IlP0yI. Hope this all helps, feel free to ask any other questions about it and I'll try to answer them!

Great suggestions Matt. I am already using a med ball for many of the ab ripper moves and a backpack with old college textbooks for pushups/pullups. I can only get about 20 lbs of textbooks in there though. I'll have to give your pullup suggestion a try next workout.

The problem I'm having with the backpack is that it shifts around and sometimes the bulkiness gets awkward with certain variations. I guess I'd be willing to move to a vest because of that alone (assuming it fits my body well).

Thanks for the input. I'd still like to hear from anyone about the quality of V-Force and MiR vests if anyone has used either.

Not a problem at all Andy. Always happy to help. If you are looking to get more than 20-30 pounds with push ups you may have to move to a weighted vest. And the medicine ball sounds great, you can always buy a heavier one as you need it. Good luck to you.

FYI guys... I'm going to be getting an MiR Vest (60 lbs, Short and Narrow Style) around Christmas. I'll report back with how it is for mobility and stuff.
