sleep scheduling rn ultimate reset schedule problems
12/7/12 10:05 PM
I am an RN and I work 12 hour night shifts on in a very busy Birth Center. I really want to do the Ultimate Reset in January but I'd love to hear from anyone working similar schedules to mine and how they managed to stay on track even when changing around sleep cycles & eating cycles. Thanks in advance!!

Hi Lori! I had 3 babies and wished that we had a birthing center closer to us. You must love what you do! emoticon While I don't work shift work, as I said I have 3 young children...two of whom are still up at night and then I work outside of the home. I do find that my energy levels are challenged because sometimes I lay down an hour before it is time for my alarm to go off. So, while I'm not doing shift work....sometimes my body's schedule feels like it is off because my kids just do NOT sleep. I haven't done the reset yet (starting on Jan 7) but what I have found from my other workout schedules is that if I schedule myself (including naps, meals, activities, etc...) that I have been more successful.

I'd love to hear anyone others' take on how they have dealt with crazy schedules.

Best of luck to you! emoticon

Did you ever end up doing it? I'm curious if you did as I am also a 12 hr night shift RN that is getting ready to start it in about a week, so would love any info, tips you might have! emoticonemoticon

I'm also curious if you ever did the reset. I'm an RN currently working 8s (I'm going to 12s and wanted to get the reset done before the switch in my schedule). I'm curious how other night shifters (12s or 8s) have arranged their schedules. A friend and I are starting on Saturday (she does a combo of 8s and 12s). We're both planning on setting up a schedule (she's got a spreadsheet all laid out), and having our breakfast whatever time is our getting up time. I am usually up most of the day, and sleep in the afternoon, so "breakfast" for me will be around 2130. I'm not sure how I'm going to plan my days off...

I would love to hear how other people have handled the night shift, and the challenge of days off.

Becky

I did do it while working night shift and was very successful with a 10 lb weight loss!!! I would start my day at midnight so that my days off didn't get messed up. The scheduled I used was:
Midnight - lunch
5am -breakfast
Upon awakening - dinner
Snack 9pm

On my days off I followed a "normal" schedule and when working the night followed by the day off nothing changed except, I might have the snack earlier in the day if I got up earlier, or not at all.

Thank you so much for posting this! I hope someone out there has some insight on how to be successful with this when working an off shift. I am and RN and work midnights also. My struggle is flipping weekly from a day to night schedule where my first day on I am normally up for 24 hours before I am able to sleep. I'm not sure how to manage all the supplements and eating when you are up for 24 hours once a week. I would REALLY love to do this and honestly the only thing holding me and husband back is that we don't know how I should handle this 24 hour period. Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Thought I would respond since someone official didn't. I am a little over a half way finished with the reset and here is my advice. I am also a RN and flip flop between days and nights -- so here it goes -- but take it for what it's worth -- this is working for me but I desperately wanted to make a change!!

1. I just consider the"day" as whatever my day is and take the supplements around mealtimes -- I was already eating mainly two but usually three meals a day I stuck with those times and just added the supplements before those meals.

2. because of work -- I did have a hard times getting the supplements taken 30 minutes before the meal -- I just did the best I could -- I work in an ER so sometimes the 30 minutes plan ended up being 10 minutes sometimes 2 hours.

3. I was exhausted the first 3 days -- required a nap level of exhaustion. Would try to start when you're off or at least not doing patient care!! After that period I have a lot of energy -- although am going to bed earlier. I have stopped all energy drinks -- was drinking two or three day before the reset.

I am very pleased with my results -- have lost about 9 pounds, no cravings, no energy drinks, my compexion is clear, and most importantly -- no longer rely on food for stress release!!

Hope that helps
