Insanity
12/8/12 3:23 AM
I am new to all this, and am now on day 13 of the Insanity program. It is extremely hard, but I am working through it! I have noticed that many people don't start out doing Insanity - but I did! My husband wanted it for his birthday, so we are doing it together. I am overweight and out of shape, but determined to complete this. I certainly don't expect to have a perfect beach body after these 60 days, but hope to look and feel better than I do now!

I have a question about the eating. According to my calculations for my weight, I should be eating 3000 calories a day - that's 600 per meal if I do 5 meals. That is an awful lot to me and I'm having trouble eating that much. Is this going to be a problem with my workouts?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm not sure of my body fat - how do I figure it out? I started out at a weight of 243 2 weeks ago.

The calorie calculation is in order to keep your metabolism going and keep you fueled throughout the workouts. I would concentrate on eating high calorie nutritious foods, like nuts for example. If you can't reach 3000 calories, set a number to reach, record what you are eating in a program like myfitnesspal.com and try to stay at a consistent number. When you reach a plateau in your weight loss and you stop losing, redo the calorie calculation and go from there.

Hope that helps.

Hello, Can you please advise which formula you used to calculate your needed calorie?

I am pretty sure you did it wrong as 3000 calories is way to high.

The insanity program use the Harris Benedict equation to calculate your calorie intake.

Here it is :

For women : 655 + (4.35 X weight in pounds) + (4.7 X Height in inches) - (4.7 X Age in years)

For men : 66 + (6.23 X Weight in Pounds) + (12.7 X Height in inches) - (6.8 X Age in years)

Next you multiply by 1.56 or 1.7 and then if your goal is to lose weight you subtract 500 calories.

Example : Women : 655+(4.35 X 243)+(4.7 X 65) - (4.7 X 30) = 1877 calories

1877 X 1.56 = 2928 calories - 500 = 2428 calories.

Let me know how old you are, your height and i will calculate it for you.

I used the calculations in the nutrition guide - I don't have it with me at the moment, but it was something like multiply my weight by 10, then add 655 for women. That came to around 3000 calories. I am 41, height is 5'6" and I'm 243 lbs.

I like the idea of picking a starting point (maybe around 2000 calories) and journaling my food everyday - adjusting when I lose weight. But I want to make sure that I am doing this correct, so I do actually lose weight, instead of not losing because I'm possibly not eating enough with the Insanity workouts.

Thanks everyone!

655 + (4.35 X 243) + (4.7 X 66) - (4.7 X 41) = 1829 calories

1829 x 1.56 = 2853 calories - 500 = 2355 calories would be your target calories to lose weight.

This is the formula that is used in the insanity nutrition book.

Thanks for helping with that, Dominic. In the future there's also an easy calculator on this site where you just input all your variables. It is HERE

I used the calculator and it said 1428 calories/day to lose weight. Dominic's above says much more, so again I'm confused! I was successful years ago on a workout and calorie program at 1200 calories a day, so maybe I'll just compromise and do 1500, adjusting as needed.
