Wow great results!
P.S. nice tattoo
Thanks! I've been getting that ink done off and on for about the last 4 months. Here is a low quality shot of the back.
I bet the tattoo is also good motivation in your fitness journey! Do you mind sharing the story/symbolism of your tattoo? It's intriguing!
It was not coincidence that the new tattoo started at about the same time I decided to begin the program. I had decided if I was going to actually get the new work I had been planning, I needed to improve the canvas. New tattoo, fix the body.
Now, as far as the symbolism goes; it is a little personal, and maybe cheesy, but I'll share since you asked.
I have a longstanding interest in medieval European cultures, with a particular interest in the Scandinavian people of the 'Viking Era'. I am also a long practicing, though unfit, martial artist training in many forms over the years. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Here is where the full geek comes out.
One in particular is a form of armored combat with rattan wasters utilizing what is referred to as Western Martial Arts (WMA) techniques. These forms date back several hundred years or more similar to more popular Eastern Martial Arts. This is all probably way more than you were looking for, but relevant to explaining the tattoo.
Additionally, I have always loved the appearance of Polynesian tattoos, so the design of it sort of plays into that theme while using elements of Norse symbolism instead. I do want to stress that I am aware that in some places and groups Norse symbols have been used in contexts applied to racism and hate. That is not what I or this tattoo are about.
The banded black work with circles is representative of armor.
Inside the bicep is a Scandinavian 'Thor's Hammer'. A depiction from an actual archeological find, this was a symbol of the Norse God Thor and representative of the warrior spirit.
On the outside arm is a symbol that is moderately 'pi' looking. That is intentional as well. If infinity is the mathematical representation of all possibilities, then pi could be considered the mathematical representation of just one distinct set of infinite possibilities (our own).
The face on the shoulder is me.
The wolf on the chest and raven on the back are symbols of the Norse God Odin.
Above the elbow is a band of runes using Old Norse Language and symbols. They read bondi, fadir, barratumadir, and riddari.
Husband, father, warrior, knight.
The starburst looking tattoo in the middle of the back is 20 years old and contains a trident with three points, representing myself and two friends who each also have this tattoo.
There is my over sharing for the day!

Happy New Year!
