Finishing Insanity, P90X next, have questions
Hi Folks,

I’m about a week out from finishing Insanity and I’m planning on moving on to P90X next. So I’ve got a few questions.

First, it seems pretty pull-up intensive and I’m not really able to haul my bulk all that well. I’m wondering if I’ll really get the benefits using bands or if I should invest in the pull-up max.

Second, Insanity involved a ton of pushups, but you were always moving. I was wondering if Tony’s stands are useful or if I’ll also be moving around a lot.

Thanks!

I got more benefit from doing the pull ups, when I started I could only do three before needing to use a chair for help by now I can do 12 or so. The bands are great I did both but felt much better when doing the pull ups so I would do that with a chair or with the pull-up max.

Just about all the pushups are in one place, I used push up bars when I did the program twice and they really up the intensity. You would be OK to use them without having to worry. There are only three or so types of pushups you couldn't use the stands on and trust me you wouldn't want to anyways.

If you use the bands I recommend using the heaviest one you can find and then sit down and lean back. This should give you a great comparison to the real thing and then after a few weeks switch to using the bar and chair. I started out doing 5 pull-ups and I now do about 16.

I find the stands to be awesome and love using them. Yes you move around a lot and grab the stands use them and then put them aside but they are still worth the investment. You get more depth and range out of one push up then with out them.

Thanks for the info!

I ordered the stands and the pull-up assist and they are pretty neat.
The stand are actually awesome. I love the thick grips as they really help my wrists.

I tried the pull-up assist and I might really need to use bands for a while, then go to the chair/assist. I just don't have the lats right now.

I'm right there with you. I'm 6'0", 230 lbs. I can bench 350 lbs, but darned if I can do more than one pull up. I too went from Insanity to P90X and was scared to death of the pull ups. Heck the fitness test at the start basically says "don't do this program if you can't do X pull-ups (I think it was 3?)". But I went for it anyway, and it was all good. Tony shows you how to use a chair to get forced reps and it's a workout. I'm loving P90X and am building muscle mass. (And I can still only do 1 pull up emoticon)

While MooseGeorge is correct - the fine print allows you to get away with not doing any pull-ups.

I could not at the beginning of p90x and still could not at the end. Still I had very good results. Now on my second round of p90x and purchased the chin up assist - oh yeh is it making a difference. I'm still a ways off but it's helping me to train towards it.
