What Am I Doing Wrong?
What Am I Doing Wrong?

Every time I try this program I can't get off the ground. I wonder if I'm overdoing it. Monday I attempted to start this program. I got through the workout pretty fine. I struggle with the squats and lunges but felt pretty good. Oh boy, but Tuesday until now, my legs have been like jello (extremely painful). The pain was so bad that I couldn't complete the rest of the workouts for the week. I've had this problem before when I tried to start this program. My quads are so tender that I have to buckle my knees to even walk (and don't ask me to sit down or get up). If I didn't buckle my knees I would fall in the floor with every step. Now my knees are hurting because they're carrying the load that my quads would normally handIe need some veteran advice here. I don't have any problem with any of the other exercises on the dvd but the leg exercises. I'm a former athlete so I didn't think this program would give me this big of a problem. I really do want to complete this one though.

Here are my body stats:

5'11"
367 lbs (big boy lol)
Body fat is infinity lol (don't really know).

Seems to me based on what you wrote that you may be overdoing it, yep. Despite being a former athlete, the key word would be 'former' and you just need to work your way back up to 'current'! emoticon Are you starting with the 10lb plates? Maybe you should start with 5's or with the bar only. No shame in that! Also, make sure your form is correct and pay attention to where your knees are in relation to your toes. It's a process and you just want to progress into the program w/o injuring or straining your body. In fact, you could even start out the squat portion without the bar and build up strength just by squatting your body weight. That may be something to try too.

In any event, good on you for pushing play. Don't give up, just be smart about it and over time your body will gain strength and endurance and you'll be back at athlete status!

Well done on getting started. I am in the last week of my second round of Les Mills Pump. I am also a member of the big boy club (6'4, 270) so I understand a little of what you mean.

MettaFitness is 100% correct. Proper form and paying attention to your body is key. I found the times when my knees would hurt, I was letting myself get slack in form. When my back began to hurt, I wasn't keeping my chest up. When shoulders started to twinge, I backed off the weights.

Modify modify modify. I found walking to be the best thing for me. Getting out and walking helped to loosen up everything - even a short walk around the block.

Drop down to 5 lbs or even just use the bar. Pace yourself. We got your back!

Keep rocking it - and things will get easier.

If you're struggling with the lunges and squats have you tried free weights for those 2 exercise segments? Sometimes its easier to have proper form with them when you first start out and then once you're comfortable with the exercises use the bar. Also if you're that sore try lighter weights...it's ok to ease into a program or even repeat the beginner weeks until you feel you're ready to move on.

Thanks guys for the responses. I'll take to heart all of your advice. I remembered when I tried Power 90 that I didn't have any issues with the squat or lunges and realized that I didn't use any weight at all. I'll try the squat and lunges without the bar to see if that'll at least help with getting me acclimated to the exercises. Thanks again.
