Insanity caused me extreme back pain
Insanity caused me extreme back pain
shaun t p90x insanity hernia need help please diet combat bulged disc sciatia
12/16/12 10:56 PM
I was on my third week, omg i survived that long at 200 pounds, then i started getting hairline fractures. the fractures i could deal with but then i started getting lower back pain. i got an mri and found out i have a bulged disc on my l5. one day i couldnt even lay or sit because it was too intense like it exploded. i was rushed to the ER and they said i had muscle spasms. then i took pills for it and during my resting period of 4 days it felt like the disc switched from my right, sciatia pain, to my left side. now i have pain on my left side i dont know if it is showing progression or is it a bad sign. doctor says im over weight but how can i work out if i have constant pain along my spine. does anyone have any advice? any hope? i feel like dying or worthless and there is nothing i can do. how can i work out and eat to lose weight. i feel like i was so excited when i saw myself losing weight then all of the sudden this happened and i gained weight again. please help me, i do not know what im going to do.

That's why I quit Insanity after 3 weeks.. I'm 280 and trying to do all that hurt my knees more... MAYBE when I;m fitter/lighter I'll try it again, but for now I'm hitting LMP, which I really like, and just bought a cheap pullup/dip stand on Amazon to start getting ready for P90. Insanity is just too much for some people, like me.

I wouldn't assume that your exercise program caused a bulging disk. Many people have bulging disks for years and no symptoms. But it does sound like you took on too much with Insanity and need a more mellow program. My favorites for someone in your place would be 10-minute Trainer and/or Power 90.

A lot of time being overweight can worsen symptoms that are already there. You need to lose weight to alleviate some of the pressure, but insanity might be a little to strenuous on your back. Because you can't do strenuous workout you reallly, and I mean REALLY, need to focus on diet! You should try a good well balanced diet that eliminates(to the best of your ability) processed foods, refined sugars, alcohol, dairy, and red meat. Eat a lot of veggies, fruits, poultry, white fish, eggs, and whole grains. Just eat clean! Next, in terms of exercise, try walking! At least an hour and maybe on a trail to burn more calories. Also, do light core exercises to strengthen your core. A lot of people don't know the core includes the back! So strengthening that will take some pressure of your spine! Another thing is yoga! You can do really low impact yoga and it will stretch your back and should provide some relief from your symptoms. OF course check with your doctor to make sure these things are ok, but it comes down to you need to lose weight so either you let it get you, or you do something about it...however small. Hope this helps! emoticon Good luck

I hear that... attempting LMP 1st, then P90x, then maybe a Hybrid, before I re-attempt Insanity or try the Asylums...

When I started Insanity, I was 250 lbs. I could not even jog in place for more than 20 seconds. I made no qualms about taking as many breaks as I needed (which were many). At first, my knees too got a little sore. Even to the point where I was wondering if I should go on. It was just about a week later, the pain subsided and I have not had a problem since... I am now in the second month of round 3 of Insanity.

I still take quite a few breaks (if you look closely at the videos, so does the crew), but I am getting better all the time. As for the jogging in place... I am way past that now. If I don't use the correct form in doing some moves, I still get some slight pain in my lower back. That is why form is so important, especially keeping the core tight to protect the back.

Just like any Beachbody program, do what you can do and you'll get better. You don't have to keep up with the people on the videos, and try not listen too much to those who say this or that program may be too much. There are many success stories of people much heavier than you or I that started with P90X/Insanity, worked at their own pace, listened to their body's and took as many breaks as needed (don't pause the video when taking breaks). They got better, and so will you.

As far as a medical condition such as a bulging disk, listen to your doctor about what you can and cannot do... don't listen to a dufus from the Midwest (that's me) about what you should do.

Hi Sammy,

It gets better.

I have three herniated discs and an assortment of other orthopedic issues, so I will speak from my experience. Caveat: I am not a doctor, just experienced with being in pain everyday.

It sounds like you went from the couch to Insanity. There are a lot of success stories here where people have done just that, but due to your back it might not work for you as effectively as another program might. I had to work my way up to Insanity after doing basic core exercises and treadmill walking for a few months. All those plank moves and jumping would have destroyed me if I hadn’t prepped. In fact, even with prep, I had to be VERY careful and had some very painful days.

Whether your back problems existed already or developed during the program, the fact is you need to strengthen your core before moving forward with more aggressive workouts. Your doctor should already have prescribed physical therapy for you. If he/she hasn’t mentioned it, then you need to talk to them about it or consider another doctor.

If that isn’t an option, maybe try doing just the Cardio Abs program a few times per week and get exercise by walking. (skip any jumping) Even on Insanity days I find that a brisk walk while swinging my arms my back loosens up a bit. I spent months walking on a treadmill while watching the Insanity infomercials. This whole life-change thing is a journey, and some of us need to ease into it rather than jump into the hardest part off the start.

Also, no matter what program you choose, the meal plan is the most important part. It isn’t sexy, and frankly it is REALLY hard to maintain the discipline, but food is probably 70% of weight loss.

Sammy, I hope you are feeling better. There's a lot of great advice here that people are giving you. There isn't really much more I can add here that hasn't already been said. What I do need to urge is that you should not get frustrated. If you haven't found a program that is less intense yet, try other activities until you start feeling better. You can always modify the workouts too. Also, how are you eating habits? How much stretching were you doing? Keep those thoughts in mind as you get back into it. Get better, be safe, and good luck. Don't give up!
