Back pain! Please advise
Back pain! Please advise
12/17/12 9:07 AM
Hi,

I've been doing the slim in 6 programme and it's my fourth week. This morning i was sitting cross-legged and as I bent forward I had a muscular spasm in my lower back. This has knocked me for six! I can't see myself doing the ramp it up exercises the next two days. Should I go back to start it up? Also, as I'm not exercising today (or tomorrow) should I cut down on my food as I won't be burning any calories. Can I cut out my evening meal for the next two days until I start back on the exercises (hopefully my body won't kick into starvation mode). Any advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Cass

First of all, you might want to see a chiropractor. This is just from a recent personal experience, I had a similar situation. Back tweaked doing Insanity warm-up. Definitely kept me from being able to workout the next few days. I just took it easy for about 5 days then tried again, first day was ok, but the second day it tweaked again.

I went to a chiropractor. Took about 4 weeks, but for the last 4 months I've had zero back pain and my workouts have been rocking along as strong as ever. Just some info to consider.

However, I wouldn't skip any meals. Make them smaller if you really think you need to, but don't totally cut it out.

Thank you for replying to my post. And thanks for the advice - will book an appointment asap.

Can I still do some stretches (15 mins of limber up) or should I give myself complete rest till tomorrow? I read somewhere that it's important to keep moving so you don't get stiff.

Feel terrible - it was all going so well too!

I am sorry you are not feeling well. Sending good thoughts! I would not try to stretch the area to prevent further injury until you are evaluated. I would definitely monitor your nutrition but do not go below 1200. I would say that to stay limber and active you can go for a walk. This will help you stay in the working out mentality.

How are you liking slim in 6? Goals?

Cheers!

I'd echo coachcbove. I wouldn't really do much with the area until you get it evaluated by a medical professional. The back is a testy animal, so you need to be careful with how you approach injuries to it.

But yes, doing some walking would probably be a great idea.

Don't change your diet yet. You are already eating at a 500 calorie deficit, probably, so there's plenty of room for you to take a break without gaining.

I recommend icing and heat, and gentle stretches while lying on your back or side. Do NOT try doing things like touching your toes, crunches, etc.

And, yes, get it looked at if this continues.

Thank you all for replying. I started the Slim in 6 programme 3 weeks ago and didn't realise until a few days ago that British residents could post on the message board - I had a problem sending a post when I first started and so assumed it wasn't open to UK residents!

I'm 5'4" and 11 stones currently. I've lost 71bs in 3 weeks (I started following the meal plans religiously 2 weeks ago). I need to lose another stone and a half and tone up. Due to my family history I have a high chance of getting diabetes and so I need to get my act together.

I loved the fact that after doing the exercises I didn't ache at all. However, this weekend I was shattered from work but still got up early to do my workouts - then not surprisingly on Monday I hurt my back.

What motivates me is seeing the results in the mirrow - I can actually see my waist now! But I'm not sure how I can keep motivated now that I can't do the programme/workouts.

Cheers everyone and all the best.
