Fat Loss Help
nutrition fat loss fat shredder calorie deficit
12/28/12 8:14 PM
I want your help to make sure I am running a sufficient caloric deficit or taking in right amounts of nutrition to lose fat while maintaining or increasing my muscle. I am having problems with my abs developing. I am doing a P90X/Insanity Hybrid and doing 1900-2100 calorie Fat Shredder 50/30/20 diet. My strength and workout numbers are improving each week but my fat shred is slowing. I have about 10-15lbs to lose.

My stats: 189lbs, 11-12% Body fat, 5 ft 11 in tall. 28 years old.

Maintenance per Team Beachbody: 2850
Supplements: E&E, P90X R&R, Shakeology, Whey Protein, Glutamine, currently OFF creatine.

Am I doing the right thing here Coaches?

Thank you and God Bless.

I did it through a P90X/X2 Hybrid for 90 days and went from 210lbs to 185. I am in the third week of a X/Insanity Hybrid. So about 4 months....I feel my fat loss might be stagnating. I don't know whether I need to raise calories or what... I need to lose the last 10-15lbs.

I discovered I was under reporting calories in MyfitnessPal app during the previous hybrid. SO my calories were a little higher. But now they are on point as are my macros.

Much similar to muscle confusion, the program was designed to keep your body guessing with the change of calories and ratios. You have been eating too low for too long.

When I did my first round of P90X, I wasn't ready to increase my calories and especially carbs for the third phase. I did it anyway, at the urging of my coach. To my amazement, that's when the real magic started to happen and my fat loss sky rocketed.

GIve it a try, you will be glad you did.

Matthew -

Sounds like you are certainly heading in the right direction!! Abs are alsways the most difficult to see. As the old saying goes, abs are made in the kitchen not the gym. Tha fat shredder phase is designed to be used for no more than 60 days. How long have you been in this phase? It sounds like to me that you need a little tweaking of your nutrition plan. I ran your daily caloric intake levels through the Harris Benedict formula (which is a more accurate count of your daily caloric intake levels than what BB provides). It seems to me that you could possible take on some more calories per day which can greatly assist in removing the unwanted fat. I know, it's strange to hear "you need to eat more to lose weight" but it many cases it is so true. It took me a while to understand that concept but it does make sense.

Give me an idea of what a day of eating looks like and I can assist you in tweaking your nutrition plan....I am more than happy to help out!!!

Have a blessed day and KEEP BRINGING IT!!

I weighed myself the first thing in the morning and i now weigh 190 lbs and i have put on ANOTHER percentage point of body fat. I am now 12-13% BF up from about 10% last month. 1900 cal fqr shredder is NOT working for me anymore. Is my body going into starvation mode? How many calories do i need to start eating? Do i go to 40/40/20. I workout so hard everyday and eat all the approved foods and stay away from alcohol and crap food but my progress is now dwgressing. I need a blueprint of what to do.

Matt, your splits don't really matter. The only thing that matters is your overall calorie count.

How much should i up my calories? I was doing 1900-2100 50/30/20. Should i try 2400cal 50/30/20 or 2400 40/40/20?

Get off the fat shredder phase. It's not meant to be something you stick with for 4 months and isn't doing you any favors at this point. Go to 40/40/20 and tinker around with your calorie intake until you find your body fat going down a bit. Remember, it's winter and the holidays so it's pretty common that everyone puts in a couple lbs. I also noticed that you said you weight yourself and your body fat % had gone up by a point. ARe you using one of those scales that purports to tell you your body fat? They're notoriously inaccurate and not worth using.

Andrew knows what he's talking about and it's the same thing I said earlier. Increase your calories to 2250-2300 and your macros to 40/40/20. Yes, total calories does matter, but percentages (macros) are also important.

Matt,

this is the grey area. there is no exact science here. nobody can tell you exactly how much you need to eat over the internet without doing some lab tests on you.

this is what I would recommend:

1. increase you calorie intake for 2 weeks by 200 calories
2. drop calories to 1800 level after that for 4 weeks

You splits are not as important as the total number of calories you consume. As long as you are getting enough protein to maintain your muscle mass both 40/40/20 and 50/30/20 will work just fine.

You need to get a hear rate monitor to track your calorie burn. Without it you will be flying in the dark and not knowing exactly what to do. I recommend Polar FT7. Do a few workouts and post your calorie counts on this board and we will be happy to continue advising you emoticon
