ARE YOU READY TO TRANSFORM YOUR BODY & CHANGE YOUR LIFE?

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE THAT WILL LEAVE YOU FITTER, FIRMER, AND FASTER?

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A GREAT GROUP &
SUPPORTIVE COACH WHO WILL BE THERE WITH YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY?

IF THE ANSWER IS “YES”, THEN YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!

Hi Everyone!

I’m Coach Zarno (my first name is Jody) and I am very excited to be hosting a general thread! It doesn't matter what program you are doing, whether it's Insanity, P90X, Chalene Extreme, or active needlepoint, this thread is for you!

So, a bit about me! I have been a long time “lover” of Beachbody workouts as they have helped me get my body back after gaining a bunch of post-kid weight. I have been a long time runner and weight lifter, and have also worked at The Running Room—a major running store in Canada. Because I have struggled with my weight since I was a kid, it has become my passion to help others get lean and healthy in a safe and effective way. In fact, I've even written a book called THE PLAN that talks about how I've finally achieved long term success with my weight loss. I’d love it if you added me as a buddy and joined this thread so we can achieve our health and fitness goals together!

Plus there is an ADDED BONUS!!! Everyone who stays committed will be entered to win a FREE copy of HIP HOP ABS!! How sweet is that!!

And to close, here is a little welcome video for you!! Enjoy!!

Are you ready to rock & roll and get in the best shape of your life? If "yes", add me as a buddy and reply to this thread and we'll make great things happen!

I just thought I'd talk about this, as often, many of us would like to be involved with threads like this, but we just don't have a lot of time to sit at a computer. I get that. Life is busy!!

So, you can approach this thread a couple of different ways.

1) Quick Post McGraw: If you want to post your accountability--what workout you did and how it went--and leave it at that, THAT'S OK!! You are in no way required or expected to read/comment on everyone else's posts if you don't want to, or don't have time. I am always interested in hearing what you're up to, what workout you did, and how things are going, so if you just post that--great!! In the past I have gotten feedback that threads like this often get overwhelming for people because of an unwritten expectation that we always have to read everything or comment on everyone else's stuff--and I don't want that to turn anyone away. We are busy people, and even so, I'd still like this thread to be of value to everyone.

2) More Involved/Commenting Participation: If you have the time and the desire, reading and commenting on other member's posts is a fun way to stay excited about the journey, build relationships and learn new things. We really have a great group of people here on the thread, so this gives us all a chance to build new friendships and elicit the support we need to achieve our goals. If you have the time, baby, I have the posts! emoticon

So, there you have it. If you have time to read and comment, GREAT, but if not--that's okay too--I STILL WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! If you are only into posting what you did today, that's perfectly okay! It will still help you stay accountable and motivated, so please consider this your invitation to participate in any way that works for you!! emoticon

Success to you all!

Zarno's Tips for Success!

There are a few tricks of the trade that can really help get you on your way to success, and help you avoid injury and frustration. Here are a few!

~ If you want to succeed on this journey, it is imperative to develop and maintain a good diet. It will ensure that you have the appropriate nutrition to fuel your body so you feel good and can maximize your efforts during your workouts. Take the time to develop a good nutrition game plan that is suited to your daily life and caloric needs.

~ A good fitness tool to track your daily meals is www.myfitnesspal.com. It acts like a mini-facebook and allows you to track your meals/calories/exercise so you plan healthy meals that will keep you feeling satisfied and help you reach your goals.

~ If you are looking for good healthy meal ideas, check out Clean Eating Recharged by Tosca Reno and any of her cookbooks. She is a well known clean eating guru, and her cookbooks are jam-packed full of healthy recipes that will satisfy your taste buds.

~ If is also important to incorporate a good protein supplement/shake into your diet, as your muscles will need a good quality protein source to recover from these tough workouts. Shakeology is a wonderful way to incorporate a good quality protein supplement /meal replacement into your daily regime as well as give your body all of the added nutritional benefits as well.

~ Take a few minutes and sit down to plan your long term and short term goals. What exactly do you want to achieve in the next 90 days? Do you want to lose weight? Fit into that little black dress? Run a 5k without huffing and wheezing? Write these goals down and place them somewhere where you can see them each day. Make a commitment to yourself to put the work in to get the job done. Find a picture that illustrates what success looks like, and focus on that when you are working out.

~ Take before and after pictures, take your measurements and take the fit test. Sure the scale may move, but the BEST way to measure your progress is to watch your body as it changes into a leaner, stronger, and more toned version of yourself. If you put the work in, your body will change—and seeing the before and after transformation can be really quite amazing.

~ As well, be sure to track your progress. You will be surprised at how quickly the days will fly by!

~ Okay, these workouts are tough!!! Be sure to make sure your body is fueled up, hydrated and ready to go before you press PLAY. Make sure that you are drinking between 8 to 10 glasses of water each day-as being hydrated can mean the difference between feeling good during a workout or feeling downright sluggish.

~ As far as eating before workouts goes, everyone is different. Some people prefer to do their workouts immediately after they eat, but some need to wait a good hour before they workout. If you work out early in the morning, you may want to have a little bite to eat beforehand, but this is a personal decision and will depend on your own body and blood sugar levels.

~ It is very important to make sure that you give your body a good source of protein and a recovery drink immediately after you’re done your workout to ensure that your muscles can fully recover the stress. This will really help with the soreness that can follow a tough workout. As well, your body will burn off the glycogen stores in your muscles during your workout, so taking in a good recovery drink after you are finished will replenish your glycogen levels, as well as help stabilize your blood sugars to ensure that you feel good, and revitalized for the rest of the day. The Beachbody Recovery drink and Shakeology are two excellent ways to give your tired muscles and body the fuel and nutrition it needs to recover from the workout and prepare for the next day.

~ Accountability: The best way to succeed is to work with a group of people, and that is exactly why we’re here!! I am committed to supporting you as you dig deep and achieve your goals—so post EVERY DAY! The message boards are full of people who are in the same boat, doing the same things, and facing the same challenges. Let’s get fitter and firmer together! Tell us what workout you’ve done, how it went, and anything else you want to share. Being accountable to the group will keep you motivated as you go on this journey, and also provide a place to come with questions and concerns. What a better way to get fit than with a group of online friends!

~ Be sure to add me as a buddy and post your commitment to join the team, and we’ll rock and roll! I will send you some more information and be there with you as you transform your body and change your life!

Excited yet? I sure am!! Yes this may be tough, and yes there will be times when you want to quit, but NEVER GIVE UP!! Make a commitment to yourself to see this thing through, and you will come out a leaner, fitter, healthier and stronger version of yourself. Your body will thank you.

And as Dale Carnegie said, the person who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.

Dare, my friends, Dare.

Welcome back Snooky!! Glad to have you back on the Zarno Train!!

Love the clean eating challenge idea, and I'd love to hear more about it!! Do you have a specific meal plan to follow? Recipe books? I've fallen in love with Tosca Reno's cookbooks and definitely feel better when I'm eating clean. Although after the holidays I know I'll have to do a detox to get all of this crap out of my system!! Great job!

Happy New Year to YOU!! emoticon

Hi Jody,

Sounds like you have a plethora of information to share! I am excited to start Insanity again.

As an introduction, I am a mother of two children (7 and 5). I am a middle school teacher. We currently live in South Carolina, but will be relocating back to Michigan (my home) at the end of this school year. I have been on and off with my fitness since 2008, when my son turned 1 year old. I realized I was FAT and needed a change. Since then, I have done a number of things athletically. I did a triathlon, a few 5ks and 10ks, a half marathon, P90X two and a half times, and one round of Insanity. Lately I have just been doing a bit of weight training and running. But, since I do not have any races to strive for or any goals to achieve, I have been slacking off for awhile. For me, it is hard to do something without motivation and support. So, it is nice to be able to be held accountable by a group or a couple people for motivation, help when needed, and encouragement.

Thanks again for inviting me to your group. I am going to start Insanity tomorrow; I will post my fit test results when I finish!

Let's start 2013 off right with health and happiness emoticon

Hey Corrie!

Welcome to the group and thank you for sharing your story! Nice arms by the way!! You have been doing something right! I think you and I have similar stories, as in the past I've done a variety of things, depending on what the rest of my life looked like. And the nice thing about these Beachbody programs is that you can do them a few times and still see results, and still enjoy the benefit of mixing things up a bit with different ones too!!

Let us know how things go tomorrow!! emoticon

And you know, as far as clean eating goes, Sammy, since you love the treats, you should check out a site called www.damyhealth.com. It's a weight loss system unto itself (which I've never tried or know anything about) but it has a FANTASTIC recipe section in it, where you can get loads and loads of really neat and yummy recipes that are super healthy, and packed full of very healthy ingredients. You should check it out--as I think you would love it. I've tried a few of the recipes and have loved them!!

Good luck with your fit test tomorrow!! emoticon

Good Morning Team!!

This morning I thought I'd spend some time talking about some things you can expect as you embark on this journey. If you are new to Beachbody programs, or this is the first time you've started a fitness program of any sort, it can be a bit daunting, to say the least. Add into this the whole host of issues that will pop up, ranging from sore muscles to an increase in appetite, it can be quite the journey.

So, in no particular order, are some things that you might want to think about....

~ Sore feet/knees:

A common complaint from people starting Insanity is sore feet and knees. This can be caused by a couple of different factors, with improper shoes being one of them. Many people doing Insanity recommend wearing cross trainers simply because they provide substantial ankle support for those side to side movements. However, the thing is, during the entire program you will be doing a lot of jumping and floor moves which will put a strain on the arches of your feet. I used to work at a major running store and really appreciate the importance of having proper footwear. If your arches fall inward (or 'overpronate') then you need to make sure that you are wearing shoes that provide the appropriate amount of arch support to prevent those arches from collapsing inward. If you are an overpronator and don't wear the right shoes during these workouts you really run the risk of hurting yourself--and a common injury is plantar facciitis (really sore feet at the bottom of your foot), or achilles or knee injuries.

See the video below that talks further about wearing proper footwear:

So, the long and short of it is--you definitely want to make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear. Running shoes are specifically designed to provide great cushioning and support to meet individual needs, and would be my choice of footwear. No, they aren't as sturdy as cross trainers in the ankle department, but my advice would be to really focus on working from your core during all the moves, and get your power from the core/hips/butt area to prevent your knees and ankles from taking the brunt of the impact. Keep your core tight, land softly, and save your knees and ankles.

If you are at all curious about shoes, I would suggest visiting a specialty running store. The staff there will be able to look at your feet and watch you walk and determine what category of shoe you should be in, and help you find the right shoe for your arches. If you live in Canada, The Running Room is a good choice, but there are loads of other great specialty running stores out there too. You might also want to take your old shoes in with you too, as the staff there can look at the wear pattern on the bottom to see what your 'feet are doing.'

Also, here is an article I wrote about proper footwear. It explains the categories and 'shoe use' in more detail: Click here for the article.

And finally, if your feet are sore, a good trick to ease the pain/discomfort is to roll either a tennis ball or frozen filled water bottle over your feet to massage them. You can place the bottle on the floor and then roll your feet over it as you sit on a chair. The ice will help with the inflammation and the massaging action will help loosen things up.

I have also found that if you ease into things, and swap some cross training in when things are really sore--and use the tennis ball/water bottle method--eventually your feet adapt to the new moves and don't bother you anymore.

~ Soreness in general:

Let's face it, when we begin any new workout program, it's inevitable that we'll be sore. Soreness because you've worked hard is not bad. Soreness because you've hurt yourself is. The first thing that I would recommend as you embark on this journey is to invest in a good recovery drink. We 'budding athletes' these days are very lucky in that the big sports companies have been able to develop amazing products that can truly help our bodies perform better and recover faster; and it is important to use this stuff if you want to make progress in your program. Years and years ago I trained for a full marathon. I'd run 17 to 20 miles on Sunday and would be so freaking sore for the rest of the week that my mid-week runs would really suffer. Nowadays we don't have to go through that kind of agony. Taking a good recovery drink immediately after you workout will ensure that you not only don't have that 'gassed out' feeling for the rest of the day, but that your muscles won't be sore the next day either. That way, you'll be able to perform to your maximum potential every day of the week, which is very important. You'll also be ensuring that you are helping repair your muscles from the exercises, which will definitely help in injury prevention. There are a number of great products on the market, and Beachbody does have a good recovery drink which is comparable in price to store bought ones too.

Also, if you do find that you have sore muscles/knees etc. I would suggest the old RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Nothing soothes sore muscles like a good old bag of ice or frozen peas. You might also want to invest in Glucosamine, a supplement that is great for joint health. And remember, this isn't a race, so if you are really sore, or maybe wondering if you've stumbled upon a slight injury, it is always a good idea to listen to your body and either do some cross training of a different body part or take a day or 2 off. Sure, it isn't fun delaying your progress in the program by a day or two, but it beats a long term break from pushing yourself too hard and hurting yourself.

~ Increased Appetite:

Many of us sign up for these programs because we want to lose weight, and yes, many of us think that in order to lose weight we really need to cut the calories. But here's the deal. If you want to perform to your maximum potential in these programs, you are going to need to fuel your body appropriately. And that means taking in GOOD calories. Once you get into these programs you will likely notice that your metabolism is being charged up, and you're hungrier more. That is okay. Be sure to look at the nutrition guides and determine the appropriate number of calories you should be taking in to either gain/maintain/lose weight, depending on what your goals are. You may find that you are hungrier than before, and crave different types of foods, and that's okay. Your body is a machine, and you need to fuel it up well. I'll post a separate article about nutrition shortly.

~ Motivation "Up's and Down's":

You aren't going to feel like a rock star every day. Some day you're going to really feel like working out and will crush Shaun T and those ski ab's. Some day's you'll struggle to get your shoes and sports bra on. That's normal. Rome wasn't built in a day, and hey, life happens. The key is to really focus on what exactly you want to get out of doing this program--those specific goals you've developed, and stay committed to that. Your friends and family may not entirely support your quest so really get in tune with what is driving you forward. This is your journey, and yours alone. If you stick with the program and make a commitment to getting the job done every single day (whether you feel like it or not), you will see amazing results. And that is why this group is so important. We get it. We are all in this boat together and so you will always have other people who understand what you're going through and why you're doing this. Stick with us, stay the course, and you will reach your goals!!

So, those are a few things. More issues will come up, and I'll think of more things to blather on about, but those are a few things to think about. Feel free to add to this or ask questions too!! That's what I'm here for!!

Now, I'm off to clean my office and do an Insanity workout!!

Have a great day, team!!

Hey Coach! Great on the new thread! And I personally think a copy of hip hop abs would be awesome haha. Idk really what the rev abs to win prior was but I had heard and seen a lot on this other.
Anyhow!
